  1. Actually it was very common to have separate keys in domestics until the last 6-7 yrs or so. Every one of the american cars I've owned had 2 keys (well except one, but that was due to the fact the ignition was broken and the previous owner lost the key) But I've never encountered a subaru with 2 keys. You could find someone who knows how to pop out ignition tumblers (just the part the key goes in, and preferably you want someone who can do it w/o damaging it) and you can get it out that way. Usually there's a slit/hole/some kind of tiny opening that you can stick a paperclip thru and you can just push it out. Chances are it'll be a locksmith tho...
  2. It sounds like your timing belt. It may not have broken tho, it could have jumped time/ broke teeth as well. When my ex's civic's belt jumped it made this sound, half grind/ half something rattling in a can or something. btw, your clock and radio will keep its settings unless you have a completely drained battery, but in most cars you need about 10v to turn it over, anything less will power up many accessories but not the engine. I mean it uses very little power to keep the settings (we're talking <1v for everything)
  3. OK I confirmed the oil leak is coming from the the HGs in my 93 legacy, but as I dont have a lot of time at the moment is there anything I can use to stop the leak temporarily? It's not horrible (about a quart/week..roughly 4-500 mi) and no coolant/oil mix, just the oil dripping onto the exhaust manifold and that smell bothers me, esp if I've been driving for a while. I dont smell it immediately, generally when I'm accelerating or going about 50. I'm not looking for a long term fix or anything, but I just dont have time to fix it soon (I'm looking towards the end of the month)
  4. The manual I had for 2 days til I realized it was pretty much useless to me recommended to use thicker oil for warmer weather (I think) My legacy has 10-30 in it and I Live in seattle, our weather isnt exactly steady but it doesnt go from 32 to 80 in 2 hrs. Tranny fluid in an auto should be dexron/mercon ATF says alldata, I cant recall the diff fluids off the top of my head tho.
  5. I believe many people run fwd in them if they have a rear binding issue. I keep hearing its not good for the duty (I think) solenoid to run fwd for long periods but I cant see how that is when you have a 10/90 power difference (in many of them at least) in the first place.
  6. 1)I'm a she 2) I have cleaned the engine up completely and it's coming from the heads (the pass side is leaking a bit more than the drivers) I do this every time I think there's a leak, so it's been cleaned up 3 or 4 times now, it doesnt have a huge buildup of oil and dirt (except for the last time I played in the mud with it, but the car got a really good bath after that one) The leak is coming from the back side of the head gaskets (and btw yes I have high miles, I'm looking around 260k now, and 22k of it I put on the car since I got it in january) And so far I cant find anything that's been replaced on the car other than what I've done myself other than whatever they did with the intake system- there's placement marks on stuff. Either way I cant se it being the cam shaft seal if both sides are leaking, if anything it may be leaking in addition. The leak trails from the head gaskets onto the ends of the valve covers then down onto the exhaust manifold as far as I can tell. I have to wait until monday to get it on a lift so I can look at it again
  7. Well put my car on a lift last week and noticed I had fresh oil on the bottom of the valve covers, upon further inspection I realized it's coming from the heads. It's an external leak, I cant find oil or coolant going into anything else (tho there is a small chance I may be leaking oil into the exhaust, I keep smelling burning oil but no smoke, it's that or the oil is burning up when it hits the exhaust manifold) we're not talking a huge leak either- about a quart a week. How long do you think it'll keep like this? I've pretty much spent this month's money that wasnt supposed to go to bills (and naturally, that's where my money went, damn bills) I know the head gasket isnt much (like 40 bucks, dont need the set considering I just replaced the valve covers not even 4 mo ago) but the problem is getting the time to do it once I do get the 40 bucks. And since the oil isnt going anywhere but on the ground will I have any issues just driving it like this for a while? I asked my teacher about it and he said just to keep checking on my fluids every 2-3 days, just in case.
  8. I've had my car a little over 5mo, stuck almost 20k on it (no joke) I live in downtown seattle near a bunch of pebble stone roads and my commute includes bumpy, and at some parts rough road daily. When I first got it the car was quiet. Now every day coming home sounds horrible. It even feels like the suspension's gotten a bit softer. I'm curious to know if a wrx suspension will fit (or what parts will) Did my eyes lie when I seen leaf springs in the back?? Anyways I know it's mostly the front springs making the most noise but I do want to upgrade the suspension a bit, and since they're starting to get irritating I think I'm gonna start collecting parts now so once I have everything I can put it all in. So any recommendations? I'm not trying to go brand new, I'm broke. I dont mind a 1-2" drop but nothing more, my car sits low enough to the ground stock. That and I am planning upgrading the brakes as soon as the car that has the rims I want (its sitting in a junkyard in the holding pen) gets moved since my current wheels wont clear them.
  9. Mine did. Between that and the issue with my intake system that Ive yet to discover (my iac valve isnt sucking air at all like its supposed to when at idle sometimes it just creates a vacuum but from what know about iacs thats not how its supposed to work) Anyways my no good PCV valve was giving me something close to the teens when I replaced it (it got bad enough to where I just didnt wanna know how mad my mileage was) after I replaced it I'm back up to about 25mpg freeway, which is almost what I was getting beforehand so Im not entirely worried.
  10. On my car (this is w/o actually removing the panel, I havent needed to yet just needed a gap) the top has a lip the panel sits on, after the pop off clips (and a couple screws) the door panel has to pushed up off the lip then out...dont know if this works on newer cars tho, but that does minimize the use of fasteners so it's possible
  11. In my 93 legacy I'm getting anywhere from 23-26mpg (mostly highway, 2 trips a day!) Mileage goes down when I'm spinning the car around leaving my tread all over the (dry) pavement Think I got like 18 that night!
  12. have you checked your pcv valve lately? Mine was shot, I was burning oil to the point where I should have been checking it every 2-3 days (I think theres about 1k mi put on my car a week) but only very recently did I notice a serious drop in my mileage. Fixed that, my mpg went back up to 26 (instead of 19) and I havent lost oil yet- apparently I was supposed to check that out when I replaced the valve cover gaskets, but I wasnt informed of that til a good 2 mo later.
  13. Do you have a sedan or wagon? And yeah some reason this does make a diff, they used diff colors...still dont know why. But, I do know what colors are what for the wagon, unfortunately that paper is sitting in my car so I cant even get that to you til tomorrow. Tho as a recommendation, I'd use a harness, there's limited space and the wires arent very long so chances are you'll be working inside that hole. I know they're a lil hard to find (car toys, good guys, etc wont have it) but I did find mine at a great car stereo store. OH WAIT!!! You're in Seattle Go to midway discount car stereo for the harness, they have everything that even stereo warehouse didnt have
  14. Oi, so if I get a flat on the front I have to change not one but two tires? Things I'm willing to do for my beloved subie. Good thing I read this now too, my car may be the most well maintained car I've ever owned but all the important factory paperwork is missing, like that notice.
  15. In a local street racing forum Im a mod for, we call it E-Thuggin' - only have the balls to say it as long as it's from behind a screen Now really, when it comes to aftermarket (body) parts on most non-wrx subies, they're hard to find. But personally, I'd much rather invest in power-related accessories than looks. sleepers are great.
  16. That's what I thought initally but the hose I replaced it with has a metal coil within the hose so it doesnt collapse, and both ends are clamped down to the point where you cant even move it around, much less pull it off. So with the given details, what are the chances of it actually collapsing on me? I did go to the junkyards today, and every legacy I found that had the hose was either cracked or in worse shape than the one I took off so replacing it is out of the question for the time being (mostly due to the fact I really dont wanna pay that much for a hose from the subaru dealership) On a slightly off topic note, why are the tb gaskets so damn hard to find here?? everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) has to either special order it or get one shipped from the east coast.
  17. I just replaced my PCV valve along with the hose that connects to it since it was full of gunk. I couldnt find out what exactly its called since when I looked up pcv hose it came up with the plastic piece the other end connects to (which really isnt a hose so Im not sure why it'd be called that) went to napa and they had a heater hose formed the same way as the one I needed (it was listed as a bypass heater hose) but when I looked in Alldata in class it said specifically not to use a heater hose for the pcv hose (no pics for this either, so Im guessing theyre talking about the actual hose not the other thing) Looked under the hood for a hose shaped similar to that heater hose, and the only one was the one I needed. So, what exactly would come up if I left the heater hose in place? I had to replace that hose and of course I went to the junkyard as soon as I rememebered I needed it within like 10 min of them closing and (except PAP) none of them are open sunday. Dont want to use the old hose, cleaning it is hopeless and I dont want to undo the extensive cleaning I did on the car anyway. Also I was told it was hard due to the fact it's an emissions hose, but Im not entirely sure it should be as hard as it is, the ends where it was connected to something was softer than the rest of it.
  18. Earlier I was having an idling problem, which didnt go away but it did get better after cleaning the IAC valve and the TB, still getting crap for mileage and my idle is high when its not in gear (when it is, it'll sit at about 5-600 once its warmed up) Tonight I decided to take a good look at it since I had some time, started pulling hoses, got to the PCV valve...well almost, as soon as I pulled the top hose of the plastic piece (I dont know what it's called I apologize, it's a plastic piece that has an arm on the side that connects to another hose) I smelled the nasty smell of burning oil. very faint but it was there. I looked inside the hose, big mistake. The sides were covered in dirt and oil. I pull that short thick hose with the 2 clips (one end goes over the plastic piece I mentioned earlier, the other I assume the PCV valve) both that and the plastic piece were the same way. The plastic thing was almost completely clogged in the arm. I was told this could have happened when my valve cover gaskets were leaking, esp considering how long they were leaking before I replaced them. Ok that's fine but it looks like to me I have to remove the intake manifold (tb maybe? Im working in limited light and it's not exactly positioned the best way to get a good look at it) to replace the PCV valve? or am I looking at something else? I was expecting to see something similar to the IAC valve but there's nothing I can unscrew from the outside from what it looks like. I'm already planning to replace the intake and tb gaskets, along with basically all the hoses that had gunk in them since they've now hardened at least on the ends and one started to crack (which is why I think it's been like this for quite a while) It's one of those days I really wish I could find a manual specific to my car, not all subarus from 85-95
  19. I like that last one, tho without the wing it kind of gives me a cabriolet feel, I'm not fond of convertibles with wings (most of the time) but now Im pondering a targa top 2 seater, that might look sick
  20. I had the electrical system checked out, no probs there. Im being told theres a small chance I "mightve hit something" when I replaced the alt but come on...how the hell would that happen considering the placement of the alt? No way! lol 2 brackets and a belt (and some wires) and its out, on many other cars yes but not this one. oh hey now that I think of it, I wonder if my tb is doing something similar to my bf's old prelude- the butterfly clip on the inside kept unscrewing itself out of place causing an annoying sounding irratic idle (at one point the car wouldnt run for $#!^ cuz the screw flung itself elsewhere) that never even came to my mind.... and yes the hose connected to the IAC, kinda started spacing when I wrote this (been up way way too long) if all else fails Im gonna just start plugging stuff til it chokes tomorrow when I get the chance. thanks beezer, Ill let you know if I break it lol
  21. ok after I replaced the alt. my idle went weird, I went to class and had my teacher help troubleshoot what was going on and we cleaned out the tb, checked for vacuum leaks, cleaned the IAC valve and readjusted the throttle as low as it would go (initally this was 1k rpms) Drove it home, the idle dropped to about 700-800, which was roughly the place it was beforehand. The idle was steady, everything was fine. Now the car's slowly starting to do it again, just in smaller steps than last time (ie Im driving down the hiwy going 80 before it was worked on, let off the gas and the rpms would go from 3k to 2500, jump back up to 2800, drop again, now instead of that big jump it'll go from 3k to 2800 or so) when it's at a stop idling it'll go anywhere from 5-800, me just watching the needle bounce. when me and my teacher worked on it he pinched the small idling hose to the tb and the rpms should have dropped if not died and nothing. It stayed idling at 1k like it was the entire time. I'm not sure if he checked to see if there was a vacuum coming from there (I can check that real quick) but neither of us can figure out wtf is going on. I'm gonna pull my car back into the shop and mess around with it tomorrow, but if I need parts I'd rather get them before class sorry if I made a few mistakes there, Im tired and my brain is offically fried for the night, I spaced on a couple things for sure!
  22. hey, ok the first thing I did check was for vacuum leaks (Im so happy i have access to that machine, it makes it so much easier) none. after cleaning everything up (the oil in the pcv valve after cleaning is normal I was told, mine had oil in it too) my teacher decided to play with some of the plugs and managed to get it to idle steady at 2k- dont ask I dont know. We adjusted the throttle down to 1000-1200 cuz apparently that IS adjustable, damn subaru and their lying ways lol. Anyways after giving up for the night and driving home, the idle actually dropped to 700 where it should be. It's been there ever since. But Im not saying the problem was completely fixed since the idle still drops occasionally, but it's so minor... it's just one of those things a driver would pick up if they were mildly obsessed with their car
  23. My car is doing the same thing- after fixing the same problem your's had too lol. I fixed this in class (I'm getting ase cert ) after a good 2 hrs of cleaning, putting stuff back on, reconnecting hoses and trying to figure out why it went from a low sporaddic idle to a steady high idle, we (my teacher and I) put this on hold til he gets ahold of a friend of his who works for subaru cuz we've done everything we could and it just wont idle where it should, so he's starting to think its one of those subaru things.
