  1. I just picked up a steering rack out of a 05 legacy gt it has the 15.1 ratio like the sti. Anybody use one in anything other than a legacy? The valve looks considerably different than the old Forester rack I have. Do I need to use the front subframe also from the legacy for it to work in a 02 Forester? Thanks
  2. Wasn't that lucky for it to be plug and play but I have the fsm for the 02 and got the wiring schematic off a Forester forum for the 05 and made a jumper harness going between the two. Luckily I had gotten the gusset also with the mirror being as its different. The mirrors have different mounting points. Not one of the holes lined up. The gussets have four mounting points three on the top and one on the bottom. The three on top lined up pretty well. The bottom one didn't. I left the bottom one out since the mirror felt stable enough with just the three. I hope this helps.
  3. Just got them all wired up today. That was a little easier than I expected. It's one of the better mods I've done to the car.
  4. Any thoughts? Has anyone else done it? They're sort of on there not wired up just mounted on the car. I think that they look pretty sweet on there. Kind of a pain in the a** though.
  5. I've got a 02 Forester and felt that the steering was a little unresponsive, so I put a steering rack in it from a 05 Saab 92x linear (saabaru). I used the Saab steering column and a 03 forester coupler. It went together relatively easy to my surprise. My question is does it have the same 16.5 ratio as the WRX? To me it seems a lot quicker than that, the older imprezas had the same ratio and this feels a lot more responsive and I've had quite a few 93-01 imprezas. I think if I jerk the wheel at speed I'd go over 5 lanes of traffic lol.
  6. Can the newer style knuckles with the bolt on bearings be swapped with the ones with the pressed in bearing? I have a 96 impreza and I found a set of front knuckles off a 05 legacy cheap and thought it might be a nice upgrade if they fit. I did a search on it and can't find anything on it. Thanks
  7. I have an 02 Forester with 45k miles that has been setting for the last five years in a garage according the previous owner. Well if it was it took a toll on the suspension parts. The body is just about rust free just has two slight bubbles on the rear quarters. Underneath the some of the suspension parts are a little crusty, but the rockers and everything else looks good. I was wondering if I find out the rear subframe is starting to go bad if a subframe from a different year would fit? I have two good ones, one is off a 98 impreza and the other is off a 03 Forester. I believe the interchange says 98-02 Forester but if I can make one of these work it will be great. Thanks
  8. Thanks for the info. I didn't want to put out any more cash if I have something that will work. Its a new Subaru tensioner was hoping it would work. Thanks
  9. I just picked up a 2002 forester with super low miles 45k and before I put it on the road I was going to change the timing belt, pulleys, water pump etc.. Well before I could change everything, I drove it around the block after I worked on the brakes and the engine started making a terrible noise. Sounded like it was coming out of the timing cover sure enough after getting it apart, started up without the cover on and it was the tensioner making the noise. My question is can I use one of the older style tensioners on the newer engine? I have a new tensioner and tensioner pulley with the bracket that was for my 96 impreza. Can I switch the bracket and use the older style? Thanks in advance
  10. Thanks for the replies. I was kind of figuring that they were interchangable that there would be slight differences. I wish I could hear it run first but for the price I can't complain.
  11. I found a 94 legacy 2.2 with low miles 96k at a local junkyard for a great price. I took a look at it and aside from the intake and sensors being different the engine itself looks the same. According to the interchange it days 90-94 legacy only. I have a 96 impreza outback. What's the difference? Is it better engine or the same? I was just getting as a spare just in case if I had any problems with the one in mine.
  12. That was a lot easier than I thought. The 9v battery worked great to power it up. Thanks imdew. The odometer said 114k not too bad for a 02 H6. Now comes the fun part of pulling the engine in the junkyard.
  13. That's good. I'll try to figure out the wiring tonight. I believe I have a 03 or 04 legacy wiring schematic. Thanks GD
  14. Ya I looked through the glove box and there was no paperwork. The only interesting thing I found was a GPS tracker hidden behind the gauge cluster. I think I have the wiring schematic, I wasn't sure if it was that easy. I thought maybe it was somehow tied into the ecu. I had a Ford about the same year was like that.
  15. Is there a way to check the mileage on the gauge cluster out of the vehicle? The car is 2002 legacy outback. Its at the local u pull and I'm interested in the engine in the car because the car was in such good shape aside from the major accident. I grabbed the gauge cluster figuring there's a way to check it. I got part of the dash wiring also. Thanks for any help.
  16. As a point of reference. I just bought a great running svx engine with 89k on it for $150. I could have bought the rest of the car for $400.
  17. I thought I was going to go and do the ez swap and then a really great deal came up for the eg33. I got one with 89k on it. It's been setting for around 14 yrs. Got it to run on starting fluid for a little while. The only thing I'm lacking for the swap is the exhaust. Not having a truck it was an interesting trip only having a hitch haul.
  18. I was thinking of that too. The ez is somewhat more plentiful in junkyards. I only know of one svx in a yard around me, but there's several llbeans with the ez around. The ez is the more practical swap. Idosubaru where are you located?
  19. I need a little input and advice for an engine swap I've got a 96 Impreza 2.2 auto. I'm wanting to do a h6 swap to it. Initially I was going to use the svx 3.3 then found out keeping the AC is difficult. So I figured I'd use the ez30 so I could keep the AC. I got a wire harness out of a 02 ll bean and started to get the engine and trans wiring fished out to do the ez30 swap. That's quite time consuming. I was hoping to get a whole car to do the swap but no such luck. Well now now comes the quandary, I just found a running svx really cheap. I went and looked at it. Runs and sounds good. Couldn't drive it but the engine was quiet. So my question is which one is easier to do or better to do? I can get the whole svx for half the price of a lower mileage ez30 which is a good thing. I knew I shouldn't have looked at the svx.
  20. I was kind of thinking of using the trans as well. I figured while I was weeding out the engine wiring I would see how intertwined the trans wiring was with the the ECU. It wouldn't be too hard to change the trans as well. I think I can use a impreza or 4cyl legacy trans if I don't get a h6 trans. I was trying to stay away from the vdc because I read it was a pita and also a lot of extra wiring.
  21. Your welcome. I pulled the spoilers and brackets off a car I was scrapping. Took a pic to remember how they went back on. A while back I found the brackets on a Subaru website they were around $47 a piece. I just went back to it and they didn't list then anymore. I guess that they were discontinued.
  22. I have the wiring and ecu already. That's a huge wiring harness. Just got to get some time to weed out the engine wiring. My car is an automatic and from what I read most of the wiring problems with the swap is when it's a 5 spd.
