  1. Actually, I have a remanufactured shaft in my 91, and it has not hiccuped or caused any problems at all. The only problem I did have was in which I received the right BOX, but not the right PART in said box. A quick sprint back to Autozone, some desk finaggling (the guy didn't believe it was the wrong part), and I got the right one. Other than that, no problems!
  2. This seems very odd, my reverse will grind, but not horribly, and I just replaced the clutch a few months ago!
  3. You wouldn't happen to be referring to the FIP crowd, would you Greg??? On a related note, a 90-94 Legacy wagon can be had cheap, has AWD, and rides like a dream. Just my $.02 ScoobySchmitty aka Matt
  4. That sounds like a good idea, why didn't I think of that? Mine does the same thing. It's not bad, it's just that the synchro's on reverse are worn. I usually push in the clutch and wait about 3 seconds, then put it in reverse. This lets the gears in the transmission slow down enough to engage reverse without grinding. But the 2nd -3rd gear idea makes a LOAD of sense Which explains why I didn't think of it :brolleye: ScoobySchmitty:banana:
  5. Hey Drew! That wagon would not happen to be WHITE would it? It sounds like a carbon copy of my car! same bad CV's (replaced), same hole in the muffler (still there :madder: ), and a similar door problem. Though, if I shut it hard enough, it will stay off, but if I lean on the door in a turn, the light will flicker. I'm assuming a bad door sensor for this, but I haven't had the time to pull it and replace it. I've had to replace the clutch in my 91 wagon, so I replaced the CV's while I was at it. subyluvr2212 is right, replacing them is a snap. Also you might want to consider checking your ball joints while you are under there. They are not hard to pop out and replace yourself, but if you are going to be under there, might as well. Good to hear you found a most excellent example of Subaru engineering! Enjoy! ScoobySchmitty:brow:
  6. I believe the timing light has a bypass to your #1 sparkplug wire, allowing it to flash when you get spark on your #1 cylinder. you shine this flashing light at a special gauge that is near the top of your underdrive pulley (the crankshaft pulley). The light will flash when a mark on the pulley is near the gauge, and will give you a reading on how many degrees + or - your timing is altered. I don't know engine specifics for the EJ25, you will have to look them up, or get a Haynes manual for your Legacy. That's about all I know about the timing light, and I don't know whether advancing the spark or retarding the spark will improve performance. ANYWAY, that's all I know about the timing light and how to use it. Hope this helps out ScoobySchmitty:brow:
  7. I have the same problem, only it will be wobbling for a mile, then off for a mile, then wobbling...etc. you get the idea. It does not bug me much, but I believe i will need to replace the b-joints and bearings soon, a job I am NOT looking forward to. ScoobySchmitty:banana:
  8. I'm assuming you have an automatic, or is it a manual? It could be you are having a problem with your ignition timing (maybe the knock sensor). I would check your timing with a timing light, if you have one available.
  9. You mean to tell me Soob doesn't undercoat their cars anymore??? My 90 and 91 BOTH have what appears to be factory or dealer under coating, preventing any major rust under the car. The whole underside looks damn near brand new! Geez, what a gyp. I hope they don't charge you for that! ScoobySchmitty:banana:
  10. Welcome to the board, kutch! I have a friend who owns a bimmer, I believe also a 328is. He is very much into tuning it up, though he lacks the green to do it. So far the most he has done to it are strut braces and a cold air intake. Anyway, back to the sube question. I don't know anything about the GM/Sub tranny thing, maybe someone else does. I have a 91 Legacy 5spd, and the transmission is great for it's age. it's close to 205k miles now, and still runs well. As far as RS vs. WRX, it depends on what body style you like. If you like the 1st gen Impreza body style, I would go with an RS. Keep in mind it's N/A, not turbo. If you don't mind the 2nd gen impreza body style (round headlights) or you like the newest body style (look for the Lance Armstrong ads), then go for a WRX. The EJ20T 2 liter engine packs a whollop, and drives the little rally-wannabe to 60 in 5.7 seconds. Not bad for a car around $25k new. Now, for the big boy. The STi is a Subaru dream come true! 300hp and 300lb/ft of ground ripping torque, with a manually controlled center differential and other fun goodies (like the intercooler spray button!) The only thing is that it's well over $35k new, and it STILL does not come with a STEREO! (though the dealer can install one for a price $$$). In any case, that's my $.02 on the subject. Once again, welcome to the board, and hope your Sube hunt ends well! ScoobySchmitty:banana:
  11. Wow, I didn't figure they would make a small cap for the Baja. Still, it does improve upon it's looks. My sis wants a Baja BADLY, but alas, just because you are a NEW driver, does NOT mean you get a NEW car :boohoo: Peace, out ScoobySchmitty:banana:
  12. My 2.2 manual legacy will do a little burble imitation of a backfire when I upshift. That is, I usually blip the throttle on the upshift, I'm assuming you both do the same, or do you let the clutch do the work??? Not sure why soobs do this, but it doesn't bother me. I've heard of some rally and drift cars that use a "backfire system", making the car backfire on close throttle, but I don't know what it's for. I guess it just sounds cool :-P ScoobySchmitty:banana:
  13. I've been looking for some 95+ Legacy GT wheels. If you can find a wrecked one with good condition wheels, that might be your ticket. They are 16" multispoked (18 spokes??), and look sweet on the later model Legacy GT's. AND they will look just as good on a 90-94! Check this out! ScoobySchmitty:banana:
  14. The best advice I can give is to look around on the forum. You will see tons of opinions and experiences with all sorts of models. For the year you are looking for, your best bet might be an Impreza (Aussie model name ???) or a Liberty. I have a 91 Liberty/Legacy, and love the thing to death. Try to avoid the 2.5L engines, it seems like they are nothing but trouble for the 1995 model year. I have had good experiences with the 2.2L engine in my Subaru (engine code EJ22). That's my take on the subject. Welcome to the forum and Good luck with finding your Scoob! ScoobySchmitty:banana:
  15. Hey all, I recently bought a Cosmo Racing filter for my 91 Legacy. It works wonderfully, but as of late the performance has been dropping ever so slightly. It is similar in design and construction to the K&N Filterchargers (who don't make anything for 1st Gen Legacy's), so would it be kosher to use their filter cleaning and re-oiling kit on my filter? I believe it is a cotton fabric filter element, but I don't know for sure. I would have to pull it out and look at it. Any suggestions would be really Thanks! ScoobySchmitty:banana:
  16. I had a similar run in with a smaller critter (i.e., deer) with my old 90 Legacy. It ran straight at my car, and I swerved to miss it, but not in time. It hit my passenger side fender, rolled over and partly through my windshield, and tumbled over my roof. My bro was riding shotgun, and immediately afterwards started screaming (I swear), "I FEEL BLOOD! I FEEL BLOOD!". After he calmed down, and we both got out to check the damages (neither one of us was hurt), we watched with gaping jaws as the deer got up and ran away! I drove it home, threw a tarp over the car (it was snowing), and went to sleep. Replaced the windshield the next day, and continued to drive it...that is until I got my 91 a month later... Anyway, I sympathize, BWM. The 2.5RS is a sweet ride, and a terrible loss. Glad to hear you weren't seriously hurt. ScoobySchmitty
  17. Here's what it says to me: Alfa Romeo Nose Porshe Headlights Nissan 350Z taillights But, the wheels are a nice design, and the driver's seat appears to be in the middle of the profile of the car! Very nice balance. It would also be nice if it offered a MANUAL transmission with it. I know that the manual tranny is "dying" in the auto industry, but it seems necessary to pull a sports car together. As a friend once said, "With an automatic, you're just steering. With a manual, you're driving!" ScoobySchmitty
  18. Hiya OZified, I've had to replace my trans in my old 90 TWICE because of the main bearings going bad. I would definitely recommend finding a junked 92+ legacy with a manual, and just swap the transmissions. It's a lot of work, having to remove the two half-shafts AND the driveshaft to drop the tranny, but it is possible to REMOVE it in a full day. If you are going to go that far, I would also recommend replacing all the clutch parts, unless they have been replaced fairly recently. This is just because it is really time consuming to pull that transmission out, and to do it again within a year can get on your nerves (TRUST ME!) If your trans is still going, then I would keep running it until it fails, then get a replacement that doesn't have the crappy bearings. Keep enjoying that 5 speed and good luck! ScoobySchmitty
  19. UPDATE: Ok, I checked the radiator. It looks in good shape, and is NOT LEAKING near the small plastic plug on the passenger side (whew) though I did need to clean it out. (damn Michigan skeeters) My fluid was a bit on the low side (forgot to mention that, sorry ). When I get some extra time I am going to flush the system and put in new coolant, but she has been running fairly cool now that I cleaned out the radiator fins. Thanks for all the advice, guys! ScoobySchmitty
  20. If I lived in Germany, I would SO pick that up! Just some TLC and body work, (and a turbo) and you've got a rocket! ScoobySchmitty
  21. Holy Cheese Batman! I WAS RIGHT!!!! (I guess there's a first time for everything... ) ScoobySchmitty:banana:
  22. Well that might explain why my 90 Legacy kept "eating" transmissions... My 91 has been solid thus far ScoobySchmitty
  23. Assuming that they are the same basic dimensions and shape, and seem to be a similar type of rubber, then go for it. Though, I don't know if they use a compound that can stand up to heat better than your average $.68 rubber grommets, but give it a shot nonetheless. ScoobySchmitty:banana:
