Man- I just bought this 89 Wagon and replaced the shocks and struts (with KYB GR2s) 'cause the ride was rough and one of the front struts was leaking. From reading the threads, this sounded like the way to get a smoooooooth ride. But after spending the $$$$$$$$$$$$, this car is still way bouncier than my 85 GL.... so does anyone have any ideas as to WHY?? I do know that when I went in for an alignment job, my cambers are different. But I figure that this only applies to the alignment and should only matter if I hit a bump. Any advice....

I just bought a valve cover gasket kit OEM and have just one little question: Do I use any gasket sealer on either the valve cover gaskets or those little round thinggies"" for the oil passages?

thought I'd ask a simple question....if I change the valve cover gaskets, all I have to do is take the bolts off the covers, replace the gaskets, right. A few bolts, a gasket swap, and put it back...right?? Does the oil need to be drained? Am I going to get into any extra work via timing belts? Sorry for the basic question, but I would like to take care of this leak first, and then maybe later this summer change the timing belts, cam seals and crank seal when I got time

88 Gl Wagon Won't Start Suggestions?
erikvr replied to silverracerkh2005's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Go to subaru and buy your belts there. I have heard that they can last up to 100k miles before breaking. If you read the threads, plenty of people who have never changed timing belts have done so with success and satisfaction. -
Ok guys, I can't find anywhere that lists the "must have" EA82 oem parts...where those after-market parts just don't do the trick. You can find bits and pieces of wisdom in threads, but no comperhensive list. I found out the hard way that one MUST HAVE OEM part is: PCV VALVE Carry on, wise ones.... list away

No KYB-GR2 Struts for 87-89 4WD Wagons?? What to do???
erikvr replied to erikvr's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
thanks you guys. I thought maybe there was some difference between the 85-86 and the 87-89s, since only the former was listed. I will use those 85 part #s on my 89 front end!! erik -
That's right, no GR2 struts for 4WD 87-89 wagons as far as I can tell. I just picked up an 89 4WD Wagon. No part #s anywhere, and the local autoparts store came up empty too. Those 2WD wagons, sedans, gl-10s, etc... all get GR@s, but not 4WD wagons............ So, SOOBIE folks, what should I use on my 89 wagon?? I would love to spend as little as possible for a GOOD strut, but won't pee $$ away on a bad one. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I picked up an 89 GL 4WD Wagon and need to replace the struts. I read the threads and everyone seemed to like the KYB GR2. The only problem is that I don't think there is a part # for my car. Yes, they have the 2WD strut but no 4WD strut. They have 4WD shocks (KYB part #341053). The funny thing is, I can locate these KYB struts for my 85 (which I don't need). I browsed twenty or so online parts stores, but no KYB strut on a 4WD 1989 GL Wagon. Harumph!! So, unless anyone knows of a KYB part #, what other brand should I use that is decent??

Dash apart....can't plug back together!!
erikvr replied to erikvr's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks. I knew you had the same model as me and was hoping to catch yuour attention. One of the items was for the rear defogger, the other I couln't find a match to and everything seems to check out. You helped my confidence when you said everything should fit together....so I went for it and it worked....the car didn't blow up or anything!! -
Dash apart....can't plug back together!!

Geeze, this is a bad as the first time I changed my spark plug wires and pulled them off of the distributor at the same time! I pulled my dash out and should have marked the electrical stuff. Lucky for me, I realized that towards the end and marked the wires that plug in a the top. But I have some others that I can't figure out where they go. On the odometer side of the dash, I have a big and small rectangular combo...they are the same size as the ones that plug into the lights, but rather than being solid white connectors, they are off white (if that means anything....). On the driver's side, I just want to make sure of one thing. I have a male and female connector left, one is off white and one is white. One is from the dash, one from the car The wires leading into each of them are all blue, except a black wire on each. They fit together? (I just didn't remember seperating anything with different male/female colors. If I knew how to upload photos I would. Anyone have a photo of their non-gl10 dash? Or just some sound advice -
Question on changing the spedometer cable ok, so my buddy with a 1983GL just had to crawl under the car to attach his spedometer cable. Different story on the 85 GL.......do I take the dash off? I got the front instrument panel cover off. Do I keep going further?? Never done that before. Is it easy?
-
Yup, my newest soobie is an 89 4WD GL with power windows. Some of them are going out (the motor sounds slow and the window rolls down slllooooooow). Are these tough to change? Is it just one part inside the door?

If you want to avoid the special tools but save maximum $$$, first, check if the struts are leaking?? No leaks.......good, then take the struts off yourself and rather than buying special tools, take them into a garage to have new shock absorbers installed. 30 minutes of labor. Bring them home and put them back in yourself. If they were leaking, you need new struts. $$orry.

I just picked up an 89 GL 4WD Wagon....my second soobie! Because the brakes always seemed kind of on, I checked the hillholder cable and saw something wierd. Or maybe it's not. First, no surprise, there was no nut on the cable. *But* I would think that with no nut on the cable, the hillholder spring would tension the unit to the open (counterclockwise) position. But instead the hillholder unit was in the halfway position and not pulled back to the spring. So why were my brakes on. I turned the hillholder assembly counterclockwise and VOILA the brake issue was fixed. But I think it is wierd that I can move the hillholder unit clockwise and practically lock the car up. While the spring looks ok, shouldn't it be pulling the hillholder assembly totally counterclockwise (i.e. towards the spring)? If the spring is bad, can you just replace it or do I replace the whole unit? And finally (just in case someone knows) what size nut fits on that darn cable....

AHA......the GL "10" .....thank gawd I don't have it! Nor them danged air suspension package

Where to find a 87 G-10 MPFI control unit?
erikvr replied to JCEMMA's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Aaron's auto wrecking is an all Soobie junkyard. Maybe they'll ship to you 1-800-541-7271 206-243-4665 -
I just picked up an 89 GL 4x4 wagon and the front suspension is shot. I am reading threads about air suspension.....does this 89 have air suspension? I was just going to take my struts out and have a shop put in new shocks. But this whole discussion about getting 85-86 struts from a junkyard makes me wanna ask: "Guys, what should I do?"
