Thanks Legacy777 nice to know its definitely 4.44. Anybody know the answer to the other questions. Also will my torque converter be a diriect swap, the trans doesn't come with one. I thought I read somewhere that the rs came with different size torque converters or something was different about them. But that might be the 99-01 I'm thinking of, or i could just be confused. Been trying to read as much as possible and could be getting things mixed up

Found a 98 impreza rs 4eat. From my research it should be 4.44, still can't find a definite year for change over from phase 1 to phase 2 in the impeza rs's. The 2.5 legacy and outbacks changed over in 98 . It doesn't have the external spin on oil filter like a phase 1 but it has the 6 bolt holes like a phase 2. Its going to replace the swapped 4.44 97 outback trans that is currently dying in my 95 ej22 legacy. Does anybody know which phase it is and if the electronic connectors for the tcu, ecu, etc. for the trans will plug up fine with my 95 ej22. The trans code is tz102z26aa-ta so I think it should be phase 1 but I'm not sure cause of the bolt holes. Just need a confirmation that everything will bolt up an that the wiring is same so it will be plug and play. Thanks in advance

I have a lifted 95 legacy with a swapped automatic 96 outback 4.44 transmission and rear diff. The outback trans is starting to go and I was wondering if a newer model out of the 2002-03 would work. I'm pretty sure it bolts up no problem cause subarus are like legos. Is the wiring different or the same. I think they added extra wiring or sensors on 03 or 04, but I'm not sure. Maybe that was just to the engine. Its sure would be easier to find a lower mileage newer outback trans. Plus it would be cool to have the notched gated shifter from the newer model. If anybody knows how many wires and sensors each trans has, or if there would be any other problems doing this, your knowledge and insight would be greatly appreciated. P.S. My 95 legacy is obd2. So don't have to worry about going from obd1 to obd2

The wrx sedans are around 10mm to 12mm wider on each side compared to the wagons. Thats why they have the flares. At least that's what I got from everything that I've read. The other option for increasing the width is using the sti control arms but they are aluminum and cost way more and depending what year sti you would need to use the sti hubs since they are 5x114.3 the specs say the 2003 impreza wagon's front track is 57.7 /rear track 57.3 2003 impreza wrx sedan's front track is 58.5 /rear track 58.3

How does the abs work on the 95 legacy. Is there a internal sensor because on the newer axles there is a tone ring and the signal is read from that. I want to increase my track width by using 02-03 wrx sedan control arms and axles if the axles will bolt up to the 96 outback auto trans that is swapped into my legacy. The problems are I don't know if the axles will bolt up an work with my trans and if my abs will work with the newer axles. I think subaru switched to the axles with the tone ring in 98. If anybody knows the answer to either problem please post up it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

I have a 97 impreza obs with abs and am suppose to get my rear clutch type lsd installed this weekend and I have a few questions that need to be answered first. I have a 88 lsd diff that is going to be installed. The rear diff gearing has already been swapped to 4.11 to match the 4.11 legacy outback trans I installed. I have gotten axles from a 94 legacy because they will fit the stub type diff. The junkyard has one listing for the axles, doesn't seem to matter if its has abs or not. Here are my questions. 1. Are the 93-94 legacy rear abs axles and non abs axles the same or are they different. I thought that abs axles had a tone ring on them, but these 94 axles don't and the rear axles on my 97 impreza don't have a tone ring either.(maybe 98 was when they started using the tone ring). 2. If these axles are right, does that mean the rear abs sensor is mounted in the hubs? 3. Can any rear diff fluid be used as long as it has a lsd additive added with it? 4. Would synthetic fluid be the best for the rear diff? From reading the forums I know I should stay away from royal purple. What are your opinions on stuff like castrol, mobil 1, or valvoline. I know redline is best but I can't get any right now and will switch to that next diff fluid change. 5. Will any regular lsd additive that they sell at advace auto work. 6. How much additive should I use. I believe 1 bottle of additive and the rest diff fluid, should be enough. Or is it better to get a fluid with the additive already mixed in? Thanks in advance

grossgary, what companies make a front lsd for the auto transmission in ej subarus. I have only found front lsd's for the manual transmission subaru.

no the car is all wheel drive. I am also swapping in a 4.11 rear diff to match the 4.11 manaul trans. I just heard subaru's seem to work way better on certain types of fluid and are like crap on others, hence my redline shock proof and motul combo going in once the condition of the tranny is determined. So I guess I should go with something like one of these: Valvoline 75w90, Mobil 1 75w-90, or Castrol dino 80W90

I have a 97 impreza 3.9 manual that I am swapping in a 4.11 manual from a outback legacy this weekend. The transmission is from a junkyard. I need to know what is the factory recommended trans fluid, or a cheap good alternative to use. So I can see if the transmission is good or has problems. If it has problems I can return it, but if it is good I will drain out the cheapo fluid and I have the redline and motul mixture to put in it. those fluids cost around 70 bucks and I don't want to waste it on a bad tranny. I just need a fluid that will allow me to try out the tranny and not hide any problems it might have. Anybody that has a manual transmission please post up what you use and have used, how it works, what the cost is, and which worked better, synthetic or regular Thanks in advance

could this setup with the top mount radiator work with a 97 impreza. since it already has a hood scoop and would the mr2 radiator be enough or would i have to use the stock one.

Sorry if this is a partial thread jack. So the 06 2.5i would bolt right up with no problems to my 97 impreza that has a 1998 2.5 swapped engine, and I'm assuming any 2.2, for a nice little bump in torque. Will it also bolt up with stock exhaust. Most after market equal length headers seem to only have one cat if that(sometimes just a resonator), instead of the stock two. The after market equal ones don't have the two o2 sensors, usually only one and the routing isn't the same a stock, meaning custom work to make it work with stock exhaust. If this bolts right up it would definitely seem like a cheap and worth while mod for most if not all of us 2.2 or 2.5 owners searching for more power on a budget. I assume to protect it you would have to get a skid plate for a 06+ impreza since I think equal length headers are closer to the ground(don't know by how much though, anybody on the board know?) so stock aftermarket skids for 90's+ subes wouldn't work. Would a skid plate for 06 bolt right up or would it need to be moded. I have both a lifted 95 auto legacy with the 2.2 and the lifted impreza 5 speed, both runnig larger tires and any power gain at a good price is definetly needed

I just wanted to make sure your adapters were the 1.5 inch thick ones because I think the adapters are available from 1 inch thick up to 2 inches thick and I like overall offset and look of your setup. Do you know what the offset is for the wheels including the adapters and what the backspacing is. Can you post up some picks from different angles showing how far the wheels stick out, when straight and when turned. Did you buy your adapters from ebay and if so how are they holding up. Are your adapters hub centric or are they lug centric like in the link you posted. Thanks again for the info

Sweet ride. Can you post more pics showing how far out your wheels stick past the body. Also how thick is the wheel adapter you used to go from 5x100 to 5x4.5 and where did buy the adapters from? I have a impreza that is lifted and want to increase the track some and want the deep dish 4x4 wheel look, I think it would look good with those ford ranger wheels on it with some mud terrains.

I have a 97 impreza 3.9 manual that I am swapping to 4.11. I want to put a clutch type lsd rear diff in. From what I have read, I need to get a rear diff and axles from a 93-94 non lsd manual legacy that is 4.11 and has abs. If I use this diff I just need to swap in the clutch lsd part, correct, and to fit it I need to clearance something(don't know what needs to be clearanced though). I am hoping this is all that needs to be done. Because the other way I think is to take the whole clutch type lsd rear diff and swap ring and pinion from 3.7 to 4.11 and then swap in the legacy stub axles from the non 93-94 legacy rear diff. Then clearance that one too. I am hoping you can tell me if the first way will work since I wont have to do a pinion swap or swap axle stubs. Will Regular non lsd 90-94 axles and diff work or do I need 90-94 turbo axles and turbo diff with stubs or are they the same? If I have missed any parts or steps feel free to add them. If I am way off please post up the correct way. Also could you tell me what needs to be clearanced to get the clutch part to fit in the non lsd diff housing. There used to be a good write up on here with pics that even had parts circled showing differences and what needed to be changed but I can't find it anywhere. I think it was lost when the forum switched.
