  1. Hey all!! What would it take to swap a 97 Legacy MT AWD Transmission into my 85 GL. I feel like my EJ is to powerful for the original trany. I would hate to loose my dual range 4wd, but I don't really offroad in it (I have my truck for that), so I don't really use it. Im pretty sure this will be a lot more of a project then doing the EJ swap haha. Let me know what you got.
  2. Yes there was power to the switch. When I turn the key, I get accessory power, and power to the starter, but no ignition power. I tried jumping the wire, but nothing happened. Looks like I gotta trace some wires yay!!
  3. I checked for voltage at the ign fuse, didn't get anything. I took apart the steering column and checked voltage at the key switch. Was close to 20 V. Power to the starter, but not to the other wires. Could this switch issues? Are there any relays I can check.
  4. Hello all, This just recently popped up. A couple days ago my 85 GL died and all the instruments went out. The car turned over but didn't start. I played with the key and finally got everything to come back on and the car started. Drive it since then just fine then today it happened again but this time it's not coming back. When I turn the key all they way, noting comes on for the ignition, no dash lights, no windows, fuel pump, etc.. The stereo comes on and all the accessories work. The car will turn over all day, but it won't start. I checked my fuses. All looked good. What could this be?
  5. I jacked the car off the ground today, and checked it. All the wheel bearings were tight. Front axles were tight. Did notice some in and out play on the output splines. Is that normal? On the rear, the pass CV was tight, the driver had some play on the hub spline, but the joints felt good. All the other axles don't have any play on the splines. While driving today, I noticed that the noise has lessened. It's more prominent between 45-50 and turns into more of a vibration out side of that.
  6. The shop said my bearings were fine. But when I can I'm gonna put the Ol girl on stands and personal inspect them myself. I had the front driver bearing replaced a little after the axle. I forgot to mention earlier that I hear clicks in the front when I come to a stop. Could the 2.2 be to much power for that transmission, and caused it to fail? I really don't think it could be transmission failure, but I have to face that possibility.
  7. Hello all, I have a 85 Gl 2.2 swapped with just over 200k on the body. Here is my issue. I have a bumping noise in my front end while driving. If I am going under 25MPH it is unnoticable, but when I go over 25 the noise starts and gets louder the faster I go. When I turn right it goes away, but when I turn left it gets louder. I had the front passenger CV replaced last December when I had the same issue happened. It went away then now it's back. I took the car back to the shop to see if the axle went out again. They said the axle was fine. The put the car in the air and ran it... No noise. So something to do with the weight of the car? They said it was transmission, but I've stuck my ear to the gear shift while the noise is occurring, but there is no noise coming from the trans. Could this be possible transmission problems, or could there be something else?
  8. The noise has quieted down. Every so often it'll appear, but not very loud. I changed the oil, and added some reslone cleaner to the crank. I tried to get a video or audio recording, but the sound does not appear on the video.
  9. That would suck. I'll take a video when I get home, and see if I can capture it. I've read that the tensionor pully can make that sound when it starts to go, could this be a possibility?
  10. Hi there, I recently did a 2.2 swap on my older GL. The engine has just over 170k. When the engine is cold, and on start up, it is quiet and smooth. But once it warms up, there is a tick/dull knock. I know that these boxers are noisy lil things. The post I've read talk about the noise when cold and warm. But mine only appears once the engine is up to temp. It runs strong with plenty of power. Is this something serious, or is it just signs of old age? I haven't had enough experience with the 2.2s to know what's what.
  11. OK thank you much. Are these gonna work with the digital instrument panel? I hooked up the EA temp wire to the EJ sensor let the car run for a bit, but there was no reading.
  12. I have one on my old EA82. It worked before I pulled the engine. But it's sat up for a bit.
  13. What about the Tach? How do I hook that up?
  14. Thank you. I read somewhere that the guage would still work, but the normal temp would read around the cold mark.
  15. I believe the coolant temp wire is yellow/blue on the EA harness, but what color is the wire on the EJ harness to wire in the coolant temp?
  16. Will dual headlights mount on my 85 GL? I really like the dual style headlights on the earlier 80s model subarus. I've seen a couple photos of them on the later models. Will the bolt up, or is there modification involved?
  17. Solved it. Turns out my pinout on the ecu plug did not match the ecu. Had to repin the plug. Now she is running strong and steady.
  18. I checked my crank and cam sensors, the crank was good, but the cam wires at the plug were frayed. When I disconnected the plug the wires broke off. How can I fix it without buying a new plug
  19. My ecu and harness are not from the same car. I need to check the pinouts and I see if they are in the right places.
  20. What all on the ej harness needs to be hooked up for the ecu to tell the injectors to fire. I have the basics hooked up; power, hot, engine harness, main relay. I haven't hooked up the fuel pump relay, starter wire (was told car would run without that being hooked up), or the instrument wires. The engine was out of a 97 legacy. I tested the injectors with a test light, got power through each pin hooked to positive side of the battery. I jumped pins and the light did not come on, or pulse when engine turned over. This is where I am at. Thank you.
  21. I jumped the fuel pump so it would activated. Tried to start car again, still turns over but won't start. Starting fluid, it'll run for a second then die when it runs out. Seems like my ingectors aren't working
  22. 19 hours ago, jono said: if you come back before bennie you may need to state which year model you are using. You normally supply pos power direct to pump and switch the earth via that relay I think in these Subes. Can you test the output of your relay? You may need to test all wires at relay and come back. May get some faster replies over in the EJ section
  23. I have the relay and it's loom, it's just not hooked up to the pump. I'll hook up the relay and see what happens.
  24. Thank you. What wires from the ej pump relay need to run to the pump?
  25. I am finishing up an ej22 swap on my 85 GL. I hooked up the wiring and tried to start it. It'll turn over but won't start, appears to be a fuel problem. It'll start with some starter fluid. I installed a higher pressure fuel pump. I disconnected the fuel line to check if it was working. The pump will run for a second then stop. Then when I turn the engine over, no for fuel comes. What could be going on here?I was told the fuel pump relay from the ej harness was just extra and not needed. I wired the fuel pump to the original wiring. Do I need to hook up the ej pump relay?
