Well everyone always says around 35,000 miles but unless they physically remove these engines themselves they would never know the year of the car or the exact mileage. The theory is a JDM engine should average around 40,000 miles is what I have heard. I spent around $950 for all the seals, timing belt, clutch kit etc for my old engine for the engine to last two days...I am sure I can salvage some seals and of course the timing belt/clutch kit. So I can figure new head gaskets for sure, $90 worth of peace of mind.

I am asking since the wiring swap to install the 2.5 SOHC(2002 RS) engine/harness/ECU I have I think is too much for me to handle but swapping my heads onto the newer block should get me back on the road. FYI: I have a 97 Legacy Outback with the 2.5 DOHC

Unfortunately Weather Tech does not make them for the Legacy. I researched this awhile ago and couldn't find a part number for any of the major brands. I have seen them on Legacy's(wagons/Outback's) on the highway before. I assume this might be a dealer only item but one of the major manufacturers would make it for them then but will not sell it to the public?

POR 15....excellent product, it must be top coated if the area will be exposed to sunlight otherwise the coating fades to a gray clor but doesn't affect the protection. I have restored 50+ cars and this was our product of choice, we used it on ALL of them even those worth $500,000+ because it works.

Thanks for the technical info guys, keep it coming. I don't want to use the block or heads from the DOHC, just swap anything over to the new motor I might need. I posted on Nasioc.com but haven't got any info, I just changed the subject like I did here though so maybe that will help.

Thanks for the info, I can get the RS motors complete with harness and ECU if I need to swap...I was assuming the stock exhaust should bolt up though. I am not sure what is wrong with the original engine hence the reason I want a complete different engine. Anyone know if the DOHC intake will bolt to the SOHC engine? Used 2.2, turbo would be nice but I need to keep things simpler right now.

Yes I searched and read alot of posts but didn't find the answers i need. My 97 Legacy Outback motor is shot and i have found a few GenII 2.5RS(SOHC) engines locally for sale to replace my Gen I 2.5 DOHC. What problems should I look out for? Should I keep my original ECU and swap my old intake and harness onto the new motor? Will the brand new clutch setup I have still work with the RS 2.5? I pissed a bunch of money away on the old engine thinking it was a head gasket problem and it's not, the head must be cracked but with 170,000 miles I don't want to invest any more into it. Money is real short now with our 4th child on the way so I need to know any pitfalls or added expenses which might prevent thsi swap from going smoothly. Thanks in advance PS If anyone has a 2.5DOHC or SOHC engine for sale let me know.

I finally pulled the motor from my 97 Legacy Outback and my brother(Lexus mechanic) and I are going to put new headgaskets, timing belt, valve seals etc on and I am wondering if Subaru sells a complete gasket kit for the job? I am also going to get new head bolts and a few other gaskets for the front cover. Does anyone know the part #'s I need and where to buy them from. My brother had done a compression check only a month or so before the head gaskets went and everything was in spec even with 165,000 miles on it so I don't want to spring for a new engine, just fix this one right.

Well I guess it's time to pull out the motor and change them, I can now fix the oil leak as well. What is the part number from Subaru I am looking for? Anyone know how many miles these engines typically run for? Should I rebuild it as well? I had the compression tested a few months ago and it was within spec. I am the second owner and it was serviced by Subaru until I bought it by the previous owner, I change the oil every 3,000 miles and stay up with other mainteneace as required.

My 97 Legacy Outback(2.5) has 170,000 miles on it and just the other day on the way to work it the temp guage suddenly went all the way up, tried to trun on the heat but it blew cool air. I pulled over, turned it off and thought well I just blew a head gasket and the coolant is in the oil....but it wasn't. BTW the reservoir is full. I turned the key on to see the temp without starting it and watched for a minute or two and all of a sudden the temp drops down to halfway so I figure the thermostat is getting stuck. So I replace the thermostat(Stant-checked it in boiling water first) and flush/fill/bleed the cooling system and everything seems ok until today...again it spikes and since I am only a mile from home I limp home. Now the reservoir is overfull and it has sprayed somewhat out on the engine. I read somewhere that I could have a bad head gasket that is pushing exhaust gases into the cooling sytem but I would figure this would happen all the time. Any ideas??

SubeeTed I had used Seafoam over the summer on it, didn't make much difference. Replaced the Plugs with NGK Laser Paltinums this weekend, reset the computer and within 50 miles the CEL is back on but so far the car is running great....that is except when cold the cars throttle appears to be sticking(2500 rpm's) which has happened occasionally in the past. So now I am going to check the EGR valve and throw some fuel injector cleaner in. Anyone clean their MAF?

Then you should have posted that link in the first place. I have used this board in the past for info by searching but my situation is about more than just spark plugs as my link will explain. If you have some ideas on where to look next please let me know. Friendly or not it really doesn't matter to me, what sucks is peoples comments to search when they know the answer or have a link....it happens on every message board I am involved in and it really isn't helpful, just gives people the wrong idea on what a message board is all about.

I see you are not so friendly after all, try answering the question instead of padding your post total OK? Two posts from you on my thread even though I am getting advice from other HELPFUL members here. Did you ever even read my link to my otherr post? If not, why not trying to give me some advice if you are so knowledgeable.
