  1. Hmm sure like their website better than 1stSubaruparts, might give them a try but call to verify and place my order. 1stSubaruParts has been extremely helpful with my past orders and everything arrived right on time, my only concern is they are on the west coast so it takes awhile to get my order.
  2. Any idea why premium fuel? It can't be the lifters but maybe something in the intake/ignition which will be swapped over from my old engine...hate to have to use premium now.
  3. Interesting that 1stSubaruParts lists only one head, lifter, camshaft design for the model years 96-98?
  4. I did a little research today and yes the 96 engines had hydraulic lifters vs solid starting in 97, they also revised the intake to achieve 10 more HP. I am swapping my intake onto the engine anyway so I'll have the new design and will see if the the lifters are hydraulic when I have the engine open for the new HG's...either way I'll probably leave whatever is in there alone.
  5. OK, so the engine maybe a 96 then..anyone know why this engine was rated at 10 horsepower less?
  6. I am going to take the shrink wrap off and lift it onto my workbench tonight but it looks like it came with the alternator, ps pump and ac compressor as well so I now have spares. Once on the workbench I will be swapping the headgaskets with the new design ones and resealing it up before the install. You should just be able to drill and tap for the EGR valve if the JDM engine doesn't have one and install a 2.2 without swapping any gaskets. I dealt with Mike at TigerJapanese.
  7. GOOD ANSWER! I am ordering the overhaul gasket set either way from 1stSubaruparts since it's just not worth taking a chance on the HG's...just thought someone might have any info about the valve covers.
  8. Try EBAY or search under JDM engines, you'll get tons of websites. I just bought my EJ25 from these guys: http://www.tigerjapanese.com/index.php?cPath=47
  9. I just received my JDM 2.5 DOHC engine and the valve covers have "DOHC-16V" casted into the valve covers. Should obviously just be a valave cover change but maybe these engines had different head gaskets(new versions) installed from Subaru?
  10. Next set of tires for me will be the Goodyear triple treads, filter the reviews on TireRack.com for Subaru and there are TONS of people who have installed/love them. With a directional tire you can only rotate front to rear on the same side which is not a real big issue, but you can always dismount he tires to rotate them side to side as well but not worth the expense IMO.
  11. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/96-99-SUBARU-LEGACY-IMPREZA-ENGINE-HEAD-GASKET-SET-EJ25_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33665QQihZ008QQitemZ180012464786QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW I'll spend the extra $100 from 1stSubaru parts but sure could use that extra cash for other stuff.
  12. Yea I am looking for preventative maintenance...the link you provided says this happens on the auto tranny, I have a 5 speed.
  13. I hear you, I have a 97 Legacy Outback now that's why I asked. What was Subaru's fix for the design flaw? So what's the procedure for prevention, flush?
  14. Fixed the Torque bind issue? If so anyone know what month they started building them that had the fix or with what serial number?
  15. My 97 Outback had 170,000 on it before the HG went, not bad at all. I bought a JDM motor for it fro $920 delivered to my door and will be replacing the HG before I install it...then hopefully another 170K!
  16. I bought mine today for $920 shipped to my house with liftgate service. These guys(I dealt with Mike) were very nice on the phone and I should have my engine in about 4-5 days. I am going to install new Head gaskets before I install it though to give me piece of mind. http://www.tigerjapanese.com/index.php?cPath=47
  17. If you haven't done the head gaskets do it all like others said. It's simply not worth tempting fate as it's only a matter of time before they go. Reseal the whole motor, new head gaskets and a new clutch and run it for another 100K+. You can probably find a Subaru tech in your area that will do the work for you so you can save some cash.
  18. Anyone know the best way to clean the inside of the radiator and overflow tank to get rid of the residual oil from the blown head gasket?
  19. Anyone know what Subaru shows for a 2.5 DOHC engine? I have a lead on a 1995 JDM 2.5 DOHC and I want to compare it's specs to what Subaru says. I know they all should be withing 10% of each other but what exactly does Subaru show for these engines? Thanks.
  20. Anyone know the weight of a 2.5 SOHC engine including sensors, PS pump, AC, intake, flywheel, etc? I am looking to get some shipping quotes for an engine, anyone find one carrier better than others?
  21. Do you know the brand and part #? How long ago did you find them and how much were they?
  22. Thanks Gary, I have two places near me in NJ that sell JDM engines...just deciding who to buy from in the next dew days.
