Failed emissions - HELP
1985GLWAGON replied to Camelwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm not sure but a partially clogged fuel filter might be why you're not getting enough fuel. I have absolutely no idea on the other stuff! Although, you said you were failing on the HCs right? So how far down did they go when he pinched the pcv shut? If it'd make it pass, just find a discrete spot and clamp it shut just for the test. If they find it just say you know nothing about it, your mechanic said he fixed it or something like that. -
In your "Unconnected hoses" post in my last pic I have my finger right on it, it's on the passenger side just rear of the head. You can see the CV boot behind my hand. If it's true and you don't have one on that side then you may have no hole, and maybe not even that metal pipe next to it. Let me know what you find, I find this stuff fascinating for some reason. I just did a search on the ASV but all I found was mostly about EA81 engines, so I resurected a dead post and asked what EA82s had on them.

AIS and reed valves, Q's an need A's Please
1985GLWAGON replied to a topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sorry for resurrecting a dead post, but someone else asked too, Do EA82 engines have 2 air suction valves? Or can they just have 1, or even none? You guys only mention the ea81. -
Really? It'd be less complicated if they all only had one. I guess it's possible when you consider how different our two cars have been so far, I never realized that the factory would alter things so much within the same model year. Could be that our cars have been altered over the years too, new components that don't look like the originals, or altered to pass emissions too, who knows! Hey Camelwagon, have you looked on your pass. side to see if there's a hole for that hose next to that exhaust pipe? It'd make your life easier if TomRhere is right, less complicated to figure out your emissions problem and stuff. Plus it'd learn me a thing or two, I guess I just assumed that the 2 ASV's were on all ea82 engines. Can Anyone else confirm Tom's memory? If so I guess you can just forget everything I've told you camelwagon! LOL

Blower motor resistor pack
1985GLWAGON replied to 1985GLWAGON's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
umm... what whining? Everything else works great, no strange noises or anything, just not 1st speed on blower. Actually I probably won't even fix it, I'll just use the other 3 speeds for now. -
Blower motor resistor pack
1985GLWAGON replied to 1985GLWAGON's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Nah, that's alright, I'll just cough up the cash for a pack instead, with my luck it'd start on fire or something if I messed with it. Thanks for the info! -
Failed emissions - HELP
1985GLWAGON replied to Camelwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You have to turn the distributor itself. If it's like mine there should be 2 hold down bolts, just loosen them and turn the whole dist. to advance or retard, can't remember which direction is which though. -
Unconnected hoses...
1985GLWAGON replied to Camelwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah, I just disconnected a hose to take the pic since it was in the way. Looks like your other 3 canister hoses are just fine, it's just the big one that should go to the carb. -
Unconnected hoses...
1985GLWAGON replied to Camelwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
See, here's the metal L-shaped line I was talking about. The hose with blue tape is the one from the canister, the one with red string is the one to the carb. The metal line just connects the two. I took a pic of the passenger side asv as well. Here's a pic of the hose coming out of the air cleaner and down to the black round thing. Here's a close-up of where it connects to the engine, right next to that metal exhaust tube. Hope that gives you a clearer picture of what's supposed to be there. But, like you said could be different between cars, who knows! -
Unconnected hoses...
1985GLWAGON replied to Camelwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Camelwagon: Is your car Dual-Range 4x4 or just 4x4? That might be the difference, mine's DR. It does seem weird that two cars the same model year and features would have a bunch of different components, if it's not the 4x4 I don't know what else, I guess a mid-year setup change or something. When was yours made? Mine was in January '85 The other thing was about the pic right above in your last post, the one with all 4 hoses coming out of the canister. You know that big hose on the bottom? If you follow it from the canister it connects to a metal L-shaped line under the air cleaner, but if you follow the metal line it turns toward the carb. There should be a little section of rubber hose from the other end of the metal line to that driver's side nozzle on your carb. I think what you're missing is just that short piece of hose that has the red string on it in my pics. -

Crap, that's what I figured, nothing is ever easy. Oh well, thanks for the info! -
Is this the idle screw?
1985GLWAGON replied to Camelwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Left one is idle speed screw and right one is air/fuel mixture screw. I'm interested myself to see if anyone else knows the correct tuning method. I know how to do it on my edelbrock but it's got 2 mixture screws. -
Hey folks, low speed doesn't work on my blower. I have one broken resistor in my resistor pack and I want to know if I can solder it back together? It's snapped right in the middle and would be easy to solder but do they get too hot? Will it just melt the solder on the first use? I know I could just replace it, but that takes $$!

Snapped Key Removal from Door Lock
1985GLWAGON replied to Mantonite's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My cousin used a straightened-out paper clip with some good super-glue on the end and let it set a couple minutes and pulled her right out. Just make sure you don't get the glue on anything else in there. -
NO! NO! That's not what I meant, it should have a hose like the OTHER hose on the driver's side. It's supposed to go down to a noise filter and then the air suction valve. I'll try putting it like this: Passenger side: One hose should be the PCV hose coming out of the valve cover. (You have that correct in the pic). The second blocked-off one is supposed to have a hose going down to a silencer and from there down to the Air Suction Valve by the exhaust. (this may be why you're failing emissions, the ASV helps get extra oxygen and stuff into the exhaust system) Drivers Side: One hose is the nowhere hose. The second hose should be the Air Suction Valve for the driver's side exhaust. On my car the hose goes down to a black silencer next to the distributor that's different than the one on the passenger side, and from there down to the driver's side ASV. So, I guess what I'm saying is Each side of the engine needs its own ASV hose going to the air cleaner. Whew.... Hope that makes sense, I tend to get too wordy sometimes and forget what I was trying to say in the first place. Anyway, I'm no expert I just learned all this myself when I took a good look today.

Unconnected hoses...
1985GLWAGON replied to Camelwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
No problem, I was bored out of my skull anyway, so it gave me something to do, and an excuse to play with my camera and my car at the same time! Can't beat that! LOL!! Well, off to work, see 'ya. -
Hey, can't really help with #1, mine has a different thing there, you can see it in one of my pics in your other post. Mine's a little disc shaped thing with 4 or 5 lines coming out. They probably changed emissions components all the time even in the same model years. #2, on my car those two inlets are 1. The pcv coming up from the pass. side valve cover, (looks like yours is hooked up, i can see it in the bottom corner of the pic) and 2. the Air suction valve on the pass. side. should be hooked up similar to the one on the driver's side that we were talking about in the other post. #3. Don't know what it's for, but it's just hanging there on mine too. maybe some unused cruise control thing since neither cars have cruise.

Unconnected hoses...
1985GLWAGON replied to Camelwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Here you go: this is the hose on the pass. side. It just goes straight down and a little left and hooks into one of the metal vauum lines coming out from under the manifold. I'm pointing at the other hose in the pic below, it just goes to the canister. Don't know if mine is smog legal or not, Kentucky isn't smog controlled. Anyway, good luck dude! -
Unconnected hoses...
1985GLWAGON replied to Camelwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hey, thanks for the photobucket tip, here's a pic of that diaphram: Here's a pic of where my hoses are hooked up, normally mine hangs down right behind the alternator. Here's a pic of those two nozzles on the carb. (if you look above you can see the hose with blue tape, that's the hose with a string on it below, you just can't see the tape. Anyway, now that I've gotten that out of my system (can you tell I'm bored?) good luck on her. I'll check out your other post too. -
Unconnected hoses...
1985GLWAGON replied to Camelwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Okay, I examined my air cleaner and I definitely think they should be switched like mine. The hose that is on the bottom of your pic is the Air Suction Valve hose and needs to be connected where the nowhere hose is, the reason is that the suction valve needs to be able to suck in air from that pipe since it connects to the air cleaner and sucks in clean air. I looked inside and that little chamber on the side of the air cleaner is blocked off by rubber flaps that won't let air get sucked out, but they will let air get sucked into the air cleaner. I think that nowhere hose is like an emergency air inlet, if the main intake passage gets blocked the extra suction will pull those little flaps back and allow air to be sucked in through the nowhere hose. I know that doesn't make much sense but I'm obsessed with it now, I hope someone else can confirm or correct for me. I tried hooking mine up like yours and the suction valve started making noise and the car idled a little weird. -

1985GLWAGON replied to Camelwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Now that I think of it, anyone else have the nowhere hose? I'd like to know if mine is hooked up to the right place or if camelwagon's is right. -
Unconnected hoses...
1985GLWAGON replied to Camelwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sure thing, I took some pics just a minute ago but I don't know how to get them on here. In answer to your question, nope my AC is dead too, I just like having everything hooked up right anyway. One other thing is I think that the hoses in #2 should be switched, at least on my car they are, the one that goes nowhere should be where the lower-most hose is in your pic, and that hose should be where the nowhere hose is. They look like they connect in the same spot but the front connection goes into the air cleaner PCV chamber thing, and the other connection is just a metal tube that runs along the rear of the air cleaner and connects to a hose on the other side of the engine. Lastly, I found those carb nozzles, the right one connects to the big hose on my charcoal canister, and the left one connects to a short hose that runs straight down and to the left to another vacuum tube coming out under the manifold. Hope that helps! -
Unconnected hoses...
1985GLWAGON replied to Camelwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hey, I just found out what #1 was on my car just the other day, it's been hanging there just like yours since I got my Subaru. It connects to a vacuum diaphram on your carb, it's on the pass. side of the carb and has a bluish-gray plastic rear housing. What it does is raise your idle when the A/C is on. #2 is the same on my car too, I think it's supposed to be that way, it just goes down the driver's side of the engine and goes nowhere, and the end looks like it's never been on anything, it's not marred and has no marks like from a hose clamp or anything. I'm not sure about #3, they don't look familiar. -
Changed Spark Plugs = Runs Worse??? - FIXED
1985GLWAGON replied to Mantonite's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Have to admit that I disagree, Bosch Platinums are GREAT in my opinion, my subaru runs great now that I put them in, actually ran smoother and felt like it had a little more kick to it. I have platinums in every car I own, my subaru, my kia, my toyota and even in my monster chevy 350. They work great in all of them. I'm sure they don't work for everyone but I just wanted to put a positive opinion of them on here. I'm not sure but I think the gap for my subie was .050 but I might be mistaken. -
oil pump not picking up, clattering upon start.
1985GLWAGON replied to laumana's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've found that my Sub LOVES Wix filters. They jumped my oil pressure up about 10 points both cold and at full temp. I'm pretty sure they have anti-drain back valves as they also saved my Kia, the oil light was staying on too long after start up, I was running a wal-mart filter, changed to a wix and and the light goes out same time as all the others. They're only 4 or 5 bucks for most sizes. Only place I can find 'em is RockAuto.com but I think that NAPA Gold filters are a Wix in disguise.
