  1. bump, Cmon somebody. I need some help. Is this mod looked down on alot??
  2. I have all the parts to do a carbed EA81 to SPFI swap. I just don't get what the hell I am supposed to do with the disty gears. Is there anyone out there that has completed this swap and would be interested in swapping the disty gears for me. I have everything just let me know. I will pay you plus pay shipping there and back. Carbed subies suck when going up steep hills. Help please!!!
  3. Well I really tried hard to force the I axle I got off the 84 4x4 wagon through the right side wheel bearing, would not fit. And then I took the left axle off and tried to put it through there, didn't fit either. But the axle from right side of my hatch fits on the left side with no problem. Oh yea and both 1984 4x4 GL Wagons and Hatches axles have the same part number at checker. I have done CV axles on quite a few different cars and I have never had to force them in like I was trying to do with that one. I just need some damn axles already. I have rebuilt the ones I have like three times and I am lucky I am only breaking the back part which can be swapped with pretty much any 80s subie in the junkyard. But the outside part isn't going to last forever.
  4. I wanted to buy some new axles for my 84 GL hatch 4x4. I went to checker with my old one and gave them the info for my car so they could pull up the part. The had some in stock and let me see them. I pulled out my old axle to check to make sure it was right. From just looking at it the axles look the same. I had previously pulled an axle from a junkyard from an 84 wagon and I had a problem with the part that rides in the wheel bearing being to large of a diameter to fit through the wheel bearing on my hatch. I told the checker dude about this and he measured the diameter of my old one and the new one. Sure enough the new axle bearing race area was 7 thousandths bigger than the one that came off my vehicle. We tried a brat and a few others but they all came up with the same part number. The only one that was different was the DL. It has 2 different axles you could choose from. Has anyone ran into a similar problem as this. It is making it really hard to buy a new axle. And I really don't want to order one if I can't see if it is the right size or not. Please help if you can....:-\
  5. I bought some Rancho RS5185. They are the type of shocks that have to have springs to work though. I threw them on my hatch with the torsion bar setup and when I dropped it off the jack the shocks compressed completely. Very bumpy ride to say the least. They didn't last a day. hahaha. Anyway I knew they wouldn't. So yesterday I got so 1970 Chevelle shocks. The are gas charged so they push back, un-like the rancho shock absorbers which are more like struts. These work great and hold the rear up a little. I have prenty of downward travel and plenty of upward travel. The back suspension works great for now.
  6. that link isn't working. I would love to get that part number.
  7. I really need some suspension advice, see this thread for more info: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=39563
  8. I put a 4 inch lift on my 84 EA81 hatch. The rear suspension has been converted to accept coilover struts. I had some that came with the lift but one broke the first day I got the hatch back on the road. I hit a bump in a wash and the strut top broke in half (it was plastic). I am looking for some stronger brand name long coil over struts that I can use. What does everyone else use for the rear suspension on the EA81s with the torsion bar setup and a lift? I have heard if you just get longer shocks the bind and break due to the lift. Anyone have any ideas that could help me out???
  9. What was the new rear suspension idea you had?? And did it work?? I need a super durable set of rear coilover struts for an EA81 hatch.
  10. So did you just leave it off then??? Also won't it being at an angle affect its original purpose???
  11. When I put my engine in today, after doing a 4 inch lift, the pitch stop engine support was too short. This must be a fairly common problem with a body lift. What has been done to remedy this????
  12. What are the torque specs for flywheel and pressure plate bolts on an EA81??? Can anyone look in their FSM and give me some help???
  13. Yea I think you are right. Is there anyway that old subaru SPFI computer can be modded?? Like a power chip from hypertech or something??
  14. I have heard you can do the disty gear swap with the help of a die grinder??? I have my 2 distys (EA82, EA81) with gears off. Now what the hell do I do? One gear is tall (EA82) that the other is short (EA81). Here is a pic. If someone could maybe fill in the picture with how to mod the disty for me. You can do it in paint. I will start by labeling what I think I know about the swap. I could try to do it on my own I guess, but help would be sooo much better. I have also read that you can take it to a machine shop to get it done. I'd rather do it myself if it is possible. What do I need to grind or drill and what not to get this working???
  15. Yea bum deal man. You would have had it. Just need more time to troubleshoot. I have already started this conversion. I am re-sealing my engine right now. And then the SPFI will go on. I am going to do the wiring first though. That seems to be the toughest part of the job. I got a full harness out of an 88 SPFI vehicle. Thanks for the great tips. They will come in handy. I will let you know if I have the same problem when I try to start my hatch. Peace
  16. Need a clutch line up tool for EA81. Anyone have an extra I could have??? Or have an idea of what I can use?? I want to do my rear oil seal while the engine is out.
  17. wow impressive!! I will try try that once I test the lift how it is. I just bought some 29" SS TSLs and am waiting on rims. Yeaaa!!!! Thanks for the tips.
  18. yea thats what I thought. Thats how I have them installed. I was mainly wondering because the lift kit I put on has some funny looking camber issues. I just wanted to rule that out as a problem. Also my engine is out of the car right now. I guess that could be contributing to the excessive camber to. It looks like this.
  19. So from your expirienece how long does an oil pump last?? And what would be a good sign that the pump is bad??? I turned the rod back and forth and it felt really smooth. I think mine still good. I don't think it is a very heavy wear item. Not too sure though, What do you think??
  20. I installed new strut tops quite a while back on my EA81 hatch. I was just wondering if that little arrow by the 4WD stamp should be facing the front of the vehicle or the firewall??
  21. yep I got them out. I almost stripped one. But I stopped and got another screw driver, found a way to put all my weight on it and it cracked loose thankfully. I think it is a bad design. A bolt, flat head screw or even an allen or a torx screw would be better. I bet you could replace them if you wanted to. I will replace them the next time I reseal the oil pump, if I ever need to. (probably will for sure nothing lasts forever).
