  1. I now have the 5 Speed D/R transmission in place with Jerry's conversion kit on my '82 Brat. Only problem I've found is that I cannot find a place to mount the gear shifter. I've had no problem with the 4x4 linkage because its held secured between the transmission and the high/low shifter in the interior. On the stock 5-Speed, the shifter is mounted on a bracket that also mounts the 4x4 shifter, however I cannot fit that as it will interfere with the driveshaft. I've talked to Jerry himself about what he recommends, but he mentioned mounting it via studs located along the transmission tunnel that I could not find. I don't want to burden him with anymore phone calls from me. I've thought of drilling some holes into the side of the transmission tunnel to create some kind of custom bracket, but I figured that I would post a picture and ask here before I go doing any of that.
  2. I did a little searching around for Brumby interior shots. Correct me if I am wrong, but it seems like all of the Gen 2 brumbys and possibly Gen 3's with the EA81 had the gauge cluster without the tach, which is what my DL has. The only difference is it seems that you guys got a clock all the way to the left of the cluster, where as that area on my DL cluster is simply labeled "Subaru". They must all be the same cluster minus the clock difference, hence why they all don't have a VSS built into the speedo.
  3. I've been told that running a EJ22 without a VSS signal will put the vehicle into limp mode. This may possibly be an issue with just the phase 2 EJ22s, which mine is (donor car: 1998 Legacy).
  4. Do you think it's all at all possible to swap out the back portion of a GL dash for the speedomter into the DL dash?
  5. I've been working on my EJ22 swap in my 82' Brat for the past couple of months now and had a question about wiring the vehicle speed sensor. For those who have not seen my previous posts, my Brat is a DL (no T-Tops, single range 4 speed manual, and gauge cluster without the tachometer). It no longer has the 4-Speed in it and instead a D/R 5-Speed out of an '86 wagon I believe. I've been told that in order to make the swap work (the EJ and the 5-Speed), that I will need to get the GL gauge cluster with the tachometer. Finding this gauge cluster isn't difficult, but rather it's the GL dash that is hard to find, at least in decent condition. Getting a GL cluster would require me to get the dash as well because it will not fit in my DL style dash. On top of that, that would be another project in itself doing the dash swap. With this being said, do I have any other options besides this? I've been told that people in the VW community who swap in Subaru engines run speed sensors off of the CV shafts, but since Subarus don't have bolts for the CVs this isn't an option.
  6. Awesome, thank you very much! Currently I have plans right now to have the driveshaft lengthed, I believe its something like 210-220 mm longer. Not sure about the shift linkages myself and I'll look more into that. If I have to go with the AWD gearbox I will but I would like to get a hold of the PT4WD one if I can find one. It would be nice to have the dual range option and the spline count won't be changed. Happy Thanksgiving!
  7. Sounds like I may have missed the boat on this one I'll give the number a call next week though just in case. Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving!
  8. Hello everyone, So along with doing my EA81 to EJ22 swap I will also be swapping out the 4-speed single range transmission with either the 5-speed dual range or a 5-speed full time AWD out of an RX, which from what I understand will bolt up exactly the same with the adaptor plate. I do understand though that regardless I will need to have custom fabrication done for both the transmission mounts and the transmission crossmember. I've seen something being tossed around these forums referred to as "Jerry's kit" for 5 speed conversions. I was wondering if this gentleman still makes these conversion kits and if they can also be used for doing 5-speed swaps along with an EJ swap or if they are specifically for doing a 5-speed swap while retaining the original EA series engine.
  9. Hey! My apologies for such a delayed response. Life has been super busy and haven't been able to browse the forums much as of recent. But yes I did hook up the PCV hoses to the air filter that came with my Weber kit. I used a plastic tee-pipe fitting to route bouth lines into the air filter. Luckily I haven't had any kind of major problems with seals related to the air filter going bad. I will be doing an EJ conversion in the near future so the air filter won't be a potential problem for much longer.
  10. After having done a Weber conversion for my ‘82 Brat, there is a vapor canister located in the front of the engine bay driver’s side with four lines coming off of it. I was able to cap off three of the lines that once went to the old carburetor, but there’s a fourth line that appears to go into the firewall right near the fuel filter that’s underneath the hood. Does anybody know what this line is/does and if it’s safe for me to delete?
  11. Awesome, so I’ve got another question as long as I have you here: I’ve read that if I’m using an EA82 clutch then I will also have to get a throw out bearing for an ‘85 Nissan 720 pickup. Is this correct?
  12. Thank you to everyone who helped me out here! Looks like I found the transmission for my swap I bought an adapter kit from a guy who was going to bolt an EJ to an EA transmission but decided to do a both an EJ engine and transmission instead. The kit includes the adapter plate/spacer, a redrilled flywheel, and a pressure plate and clutch for an EA82. Since the RX transmission is the same as any other manual transmission found with an EA82 I assume that all of these things will work.
  13. Hey everyone, My original plan with my EA81 to EJ22 swap is to also swap the 4 speed single range transmission with a 5 speed dual range out of an EA82 Subaru. Unfortunately I have yet to find such a transmission but I was able to come across a 5 speed Full-Time 4WD transmission from an 1988 RX. Can anybody confirm if this will fit? I bought a kit to adapt an EJ22 with an EA series transmission including a redrilled fly wheel, clutch, pressure plate, and SJR custom made adapter, but I don't know if any of it would work with an RX transmission.
  14. Hello everyone, Long time no see! This is the first post that I have made in a while and I have now owned my '82 Brat for over a year. Since then I had completed a Weber 32/36 carburetor conversion along with several other smaller projects. Now, as winter in the northeast approaches, I am looking to start a new project with my Brat for next summer: swapping out the stock EA81 with its 4spd manual to an EJ22 and 5spd. From doing some research on the forums here, I realize that this is a fairly common swap for these vehicles which means there are many threads related to the subject, however I was wondering if anyone can recommend a handful of the best threads on this swap so I can narrow down the amount of information that I need to look at here on the forums. I will be completely honest in that this would be the largest project I have yet to take on and can use any advice I can get. One thing I've realized in researching this topic is that I need to recognize my limitations, needs, and goals surrounding it. This Brat is not my daily driver and simply a fun weekend vehicle. I will not be driving it at all during the winter months, so I do not need to rely on it for daily transportation. My goal for this project is to have a Brat retrofitted with a drivetrain that will give it enough power to drive more comfortable with modern traffic and be reliable. Ideally, I would like to do a swap that will require as little custom work (rear end modifications, suspension modifications, etc.) as possible besides the new engine and transmission. I will not be doing any serious off-roading, just taking it out for weekend cruises. It sounds like a good start to this project besides doing research is getting a donor car with all of the needed parts rather than sourcing each part separately. With this being said, what parts would I need from the donor car besides the engine, transmission, and wiring? As I said, any advice is appreciated. Thank you.
  15. Thank you so much Bennie! Lots of great information here I really appreciate it. I will be looking into an alternator upgrade!
  16. Hey everybody, First off, I know I've been posting quite a bit of new topics recently so I hope it's not coming off as a spam problem. I'm just trying to narrow down all of the issues that I am having with my Brat so I can get most of it done it time for summer. So for the past couple of months, all of the warning lights on the dashboard (parking brake, battery, etc.) have stayed on while driving. However, whenever they are on, they stay dimly lit and look as though they are flickering. When I looked up what could be the problem, I found that a bad alternator may be the culprit. When I went to do an alternator test though, I found that the battery was holding proper voltage while the car was both on and off, so I eliminated the alternator as being a potential problem. The other day while I was taking it for a spin, all of the dash lights suddenly came on very brightly, and it felt as though that the car was about to die. Soon afterwards though, the lights went back to just dim flickering and the car remained running. I'm afraid to take the car out again if it's just going to die on me soon, so I'd like to solve the problem before it leaves me stranded. What do you guys think could be the problem? Ignition coil/module? Looking for suggestions. I should also note that the car has trouble with cold starts and that it may possibly be related to the issue. Thank you!
  17. I just brought my driver’s seat to get reupholstered, so I’ll check back with them to see if I can get the shift boot done. Thank you guys!

  19. Hey everyone, Does anybody know if I can get a brand new factory cloth shift boot anywhere? If not, are there any aftermarket ones that will fit? Mine is torn at the top and falling apart. ------ It's a 1982 BRAT
  20. Yeah, the gentleman I bought this Brat from told me a similar story that he found someone who had the piece for sale but wanted something in the ballpark of $1000 for it, unbelievable. I wish I could've taken advantage of gathering a bunch of NOS dealer stock back then, but I am just now getting into the vintage Subaru ownership scene as of this past summer. I am fresh out of school and still paying off student loans so paying an arm and a leg for a piece of trim is not the greatest idea right now. I did buy this vehicle knowing that there weren't going to be catalogs readily available with every part one could possibly need for an old Subi, but I suppose this could all be part of the fun of owning one. I noticed that it says you live in Bridgeport, so if you happen to have or come across anything you may want to sell, I am not too far away!
  21. That would be something I may be interested in. I'm not looking to do a 100% OEM restoration, since I already have put a Weber 32/36 on it, so this is something I would be open to.
