  1. Yes, that's the style that I am looking for. There was another style that was more rounded without the indented area on it but that's not the style I am looking for. It's not the clearest picture, but I included one of what I am looking for here.
  2. And I just remembered, I am also searching for a driver's side mirror, specifically the style that appears to have an indent on it that I believe were on Brats from 1983 and up.
  3. Hey everyone, I've been doing some searching around online and I have been having a hard time finding the chrome trim piece that came on the tailgate of the Brats, specifically a 1982. I have every bed trim piece except for the tailgate. From what I understand, it seems like this may be a very difficult part to find much like many other Brat parts, but I figured that I'd give it a shot and post this in the case that someone who has a spare may want to sell it. Thank you!
  4. Hey everyone! Update: The Brat is alive! So after doing all of the electrical tests and finding that everything checked out fine, myself and a friend who knows a little more about carburetors than I do decided to take the carburetor cover off of the carburetor body itself and found that the seat for the needle (I believe that is the correct terminology) was backed all of the way out, preventing the proper fuel flow. Now with it properly adjusted, the Brat is running great. Thank you all so much for your help.
  5. I may have read it wrong, but I thought I read in another post on this forum that the fuel pump should not have power going to it once it is running? Right now though it only has power when the engine is cranking.
  6. I haven't checked if my alternator/charging system is working properly, but I'll have to get a multimeter and check it out. A couple months ago I had brought my Brat over to a friend's house who does body repair and was kind enough to do a little rust repair. During the time it was being repaired I believe it had been sitting for a little over a week. When the work was done and I started it up, I noticed that all of the warning lights on the dash were illuminated and stayed illuminated during the drive home. They have stayed on since, but I assumed it wasn't something necessarily unusual because it is an old car. They were never on all at once until it sat for a little while during the body work. I tried to do a little research into why it was doing this, and I found that it could possibly be related to an alternator/charging system problem. I'll check it out.
  7. I haven't gotten the chance to yet, but I'll try spraying a little starting fluid into the intake to see if it starts up. There is fuel flowing when I disconnected the fuel line and cranked the engine.
  8. Hey everybody, Recently I finally completed the Weber swap on my 1982 Brat that I bought this past summer. It originally had the 1 BBL Carter/Weber which desperately needed to be replaced, but I could not find any aftermarket support for this particular carburetor, so my next best option was to go with the 32/36 Weber. Along with the new carburetor, it also has the EA82 intake manifold swapped on it. once everything was hooked up and adjusted, I tried to start it up, however it ran like garbage. I made the bonehead mistake of not realizing I had swapped two of the spark plug wires when putting everything back together, so once this was fixed it was running great. However, after running the engine for about 5 minutes once the firing order was corrected, the engine suddenly died. I tried starting it up again, and it would run for a second or two and then die. The engine was getting spark, so I wondered if it ran out of gas because a lot of raw fuel was dumped when the firing order was not correct. Plus, the gas gauge currently does not work so I cannot go off of that. I filled the gas tank with about 5 gallons of gasoline and attempted to start it, but it still starts for only about a second or two before dying. Using a multimeter shows that the fuel pump is getting power only when the engine is cranking. I thought that was odd, but after reading some of the forums here I discovered that this is normal for these vehicles. It's getting fuel through the lines, but I don't know if the flow amount is enough to keep it running. Does anyone have any idea why the engine would suddenly die like this? Considering the dumb mistake that I made with the spark plugs, I wouldn't be surprised if it is something equally as obvious. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
  9. Hey everyone, I'm almost finished swapping the old 1 BBL Carter/Weber with a new 32/36 Weber, however there are still a few finishing touches that I may need to get done before it is officially complete. In the Weber installation instructions, it says that if there is a fuel return line, then it will need to be capped off. Does my brat have a fuel return line and if so where is it? I can see three hoses that come off the fuel filter, one from the top of the fuel filter and two from its base. I know that one must be the main fuel line, but I am not sure what each one exactly is. Also, some writeups on here say to connect the old Y-shaped fuel inlet from the old carburetor to the new Weber. If this is the case, what are the two hoses that must connect to the inlet? P.S. This whole project has been a huge learning lesson for me not to take apart things without taking pictures or at least tagging and identifying components. Thank you!
  10. Hey everyone, Recently, I started swapping the old 1 BBL Carter-Weber carburetor that was on my 1982 Subaru Brat for the Weber 32/36 DGEV by Redline. I have gotten as far as removing the old carb, swapping the EA81 intake manifold with an EA82 intake manifold, and installing the adapter plates, but from here I am pretty stuck. Since this has been my first project ever involving a carburetor, it has been a huge learning experience for me, and I definitely have made some mistakes during the process. One of these mistakes was my failure to properly take note of and tag the different vacuum and hose lines that connect to the carburetor/engine/manifold. I am also pretty new on working on cars, so I have a difficult time telling what function each vacuum/hose line serves just by looking at the engine bay. There is a diagram displaying he vacuum line setup. but I am having a hard time matching that with what is in the engine bay. There is a vacuum port on the right side of the manifold, which I'm pretty is for the brake booster, and a port on the backside of the manifold, which I am not sure what it is for. From what I understand, a lot of the vacuum lines used in the stock setup can be deleted due to them being used for emissions. If anyone can offer any help on what to do from here, I would greatly appreciate it. I am just so eager to be able to drive my Brat again! Thank you all
  11. Thank you everyone for the help. Life has been a bit crazy recently, so my apologies for the late response. I had to ask this because I just did not want to risk breaking something that was not meant to come out.
  12. Hey Everyone, So I finally sourced an EA82 intake manifold to do a Weber swap because my Brat came with the 1 BBL Carter-Weber that needs to have either the Hitachi manifold or the EA82 manifold to allow the swap to be done. I am currently in the process of removing the EA81 intake manifold but I came across an issue. There is a pipe of some kind located near the EGR that is attached by one end to the manifold, and from what I can see it seems like there is no way that the manifold can be removed without the pipe being removed. However, I read in a different thread that this pipe I am seeing may possibly be pressed in and therefore should be left alone. I've tried removing it but it will not budge. Would anybody here have any suggestions and/or know what it is that I need to do to completely take off an EA82 manifold? Thank you
  13. Thank you so much! I was able to source a EA82 manifold off of an ‘87 wagon, and I just bought a newly rebuilt hitachi carburetor. From what I’ve read in here, it seems like the Hitachi will be more of a headache compared to the Weber 32/36, but I wanted to be able to keep the engine bay looking stock with the blue Subaru air filter, I didn’t like the look of the Weber filter. I should probably be asking this in a separate thread, but since I’ll be going from a Carter-Weber to a Hitachi, will there be any additional steps I need to take to install it on the new manifold?
  14. Okay I see, the problem for me though is that I cannot find out exactly what I am looking for. I’m still trying to learn about this vehicle, especially since this is my first carbureted car. What would the intake for the carburetor look like?
  15. Hey everyone, Would anybody on this forum happen to have a manifold for an Hitachi 2 BBL? I'm replacing the carburetor that I have on mine which is a Carter-Weber 1 BBL, and whether I go for an Hitachi 2 BBL or a Weber 32/36, it looks like I will need the manifold for the Hitachi. Thank you!
  16. Thank you everyone for your help. I tried setting the choke but unfortunately it didn’t really fix the bad running engine. I’m going to try and make another post to hopefully source a Hitachi manifold.
  17. Hey everyone, First off I would just like to say that I previously made my first post on the introduction forum but it has since been removed for some unknown reason. For those of you who did not see it though, this past July I finally bought my dream car: a Subaru Brat. It is a 1982 DL with 94,000 original miles, making it the first Subaru that I have ever owned. However, I am currently having issues getting it to run properly. Just a disclaimer: I am trying to learn as much about these vehicles as I can, and to a certain extent about cars in general since I am fairly new to this hobby. I have never owned a car of this vintage before so this is all new territory to me. If I make any dumb comments or simply do not know what I am talking about, please forgive me and do not hesitate to correct me. After having the Brat checked over with my mechanic, he emphasized that I should have the carburetor either rebuilt or completely replaced because the accelerator pump is shot. On cold starts, it takes awhile for it to run even "decently" and it often stalls if I press the accelerator too quickly. I should note that my mechanic is a good family friend of mine and I trust him enough that he would never lead me to believe that I should have something fixed or replaced that in reality does not need it. So as I started looking for either a rebuild kit or a fully rebuilt carburetor, I ran into some issues. The first issue is that from what I've researched, the Brat I have seems to be one of the few model years (82-84) that were equipped with a 1 BBL Carter-Weber. The remaining years that the Brat was produced, from my understanding, was equipped with a 2 BBL Hitachi. Naturally, it seems like the carburetor that was made less has less serviceable and replacement parts available. I've tried looking for fully rebuilt carbs and rebuild kits for my particular one but I have found absolutely nothing. Through looking on forums on here, I found a website called Chicago Carburetors that looked like it had the carburetor I was looking for. http://www.chicagocarburetor.com/carburetors-remanufactured.php?c=124 It let me go through the entire check out process and said my order was confirmed, however when I called the phone number listed on the website to find out if there was a way to track my order, they had said nothing was ever shipped because they didn't have any of this type of carburetor in stock. So this left me without any source for a rebuilt 1 BBL Carter-Weber or a rebuild kit for it. Since it seemed like there was more aftermarket support for the 2 BBL Hitachi carburetors, I looked getting one of those, but from what I have read it doesn't seem to be the greatest idea. Every forum I have read on here about the Hitachi carb says they are more trouble than they are worth. As of writing this post, there is NOS Hitachi carb on eBay for the 82-87 Brat with either the 1700cc or 1800cc engine, however it is over $600 and to spend that kind of money on a carburetor that is a supposedly complex, underperforming, and overall nothing but a headache, that seems to be a lot of money. Plus, forums on here say I would need a new manifold if I were to switch from the Carter-Weber to the Hitachi, and I can't seem to find anything when I google one. Most of the forums on here say to swap out the original carburetors with a Weber 32/36 because it is a simple carb and works well with the EA81. I looked into getting one, but it says in the item description that it will not fit the 83-84 Subaru with the 1.8 L equipped with the 1 BBL Carter-Weber. Granted my is an 1982, but I am pretty sure that is exactly what I have for the engine and carb, and I obviously don't want to buy something that will not work on my vehicle. So from here I am stuck and not sure what my options are. I would prioritize having a a well-running vehicle over its aesthetics, however if possible I would also love to be able to keep using the stock blue air filter that came with these Subarus. I have seen a lot of pictures of the 32/36 Webers on EA81, but I really do not like the way it looks in the engine bay with its air filter. I love the stock look, and if I can help it I will but if I have no other option then I will settle for a different air filter. I should also note that I do realize that I bought a vehicle with parts that are not readily available, I am just coming here to ask for help because I figured you all are the most knowledgeable when it comes to these vehicles. Thank you guys for your help.
