  1. but you say i should steal another fust from a non-working component, so what do I do with the blown one? just switch them? sorry if I may be unknowledged but if it makes you feel better you're teaching me life lessons here.
  2. what if i just take the broken fuse out? if it's the radio? since nothing is connected to it, would it work?
  3. by the way, i really love this forum, it's like the informational side of my father without all the yelling about irresponsibility. really appreciate it
  4. i'll run out there and check, now the only problem is getting a fuse and replacing it before 9am today. do meter maids accept stories of cars not starting?
  5. ok, after having my car broken into and everything ************ty happening. I just wanted to feel better and get some fast food (meh, better then storebrand food 24/7) so I go get my car and i go down the block and while my cd player is still stolen i look at the big black cable coming out (i think it's ground). I put it back into the giant hole and it hits metal, car stalls, ************, I must have grounded it. luckily some guys helped us jump our car, but to no avail, it didn't start. guy told me it was the starter or the alternator. no clue which. anyone have any ideas.... sigh. best of all, it's in a parking spot with street sweeping tomarrow at 9am ( or rather today at 9am.) sigh... why me.
  6. right now I want to avoid going to the junkyard (I have no clue if any junkyard in a 300mile radius still keeps an 87 subaru. anyway to do this otherwise?
  7. anyone perchance know which DIN years fit an 87 subaru GL? trying to score a 20$ replacement by means of ebay.
  8. i think i know what im gonna do, the question is rather, how to do it right now there's a giant gap where a radio should be in my car, what would i need to fill that gap? what would be the cheapest route? im preferring the line-in via ipod now so i don't even have to bother with a cassette. so... where could i obtain something that would fit that area, and perferably, be easy to self install. did they even make radio stereos with line-in?
  9. So I goto San Francisco State University, and parking is slim, real slim. and I love my car, I just don't love it enough to pay for a parking permit that allows me to park in a parking lot further away from where I live when I can just move my car for street sweeping. Ok, and included in this scarce parking is really unlit areas that theives try to steal things from cars in. Tonight I had my 3rd CD player since attending SFSU. currently a sophmore in spring semester. that's 3 cd players in 2 years. OK, after the first 2 I thought I had learned. Of course I didn't. my car was broken into. the faceplate was locked in the glove box. I come back, a window broken, the glovebox is broken, and everything is stolen (only thing valulable is the CD player). so anyways. I cardboard up the window in hopes that I can find a cheap glass replacement place like I did in so-cal (60$ installed). filed a police report after the 3 thefts. Now, I don't care anymore. after 3 thefts God is showing me he doesn't want me to have music in my car. that's fine. I barely listen to CDs anyways. I like to listen to the radio for ambience. ok. so I have this idea to just get a cassette player for my Car. and just use a cassette line-in for long trips and I can just use my Ipod. Seriously, anyone think that an OLD cassette player would get stolen? my only problem is, how the hell would I install one of these? what would be awesome is if there was a later year stock radio (then 87) that could be fitted directly to where the current hole is. my 87 didn't come with a cassette, only a radio. can anyone point me in the right direction to getting this done? thanks. and thanks again for reading it all. my god. an 87 subaru. people must be desperate.
  10. Ok, so I took it to a guy locally that had the best price from the yellow pages, $190 for parts and labor, considering it was 97$ for the new axle... I'm thrilled. Was a very nice guy, it runs, no more grinding noise... Question though, he told me the left axle boot was leaking, anything I can do to prevent it from going bad or will I just have to replace the left axle soon too? Also, seems when my dad first bought the car, he put 2 rebuilt axles in it... I'll have had the car for 2 years come this February, I suppose rebuilt axles don't last that long...
  11. meh, first time I went to that mechanic, won't be going back.
  12. the car was grinding, my dad thought i was irresponsible and ground down the rotors, pulled the wheels off, pads had 40% left on them, my dad thought it was the berrings since my step mom had to replace hers for a similiar noise.... I think
  13. how hard would it be to do myself? i can change the brakes / rotors myself, would replacing what's broken be that hard?
  14. Thanks, that's not too bad... think I'll find an indep, mechanic. thanks to technology and the internet, woulda never figured this out.
  15. Ok, it's a 4wd, i'll try the 4wd when I get back, yeah, was checking it, looks like the CV joint ran dry and completely failed... you say I need a new axle.... any idea on price / labor?
  16. So I was going to have my front wheel berrings replaced as well as new rotors / pads, seems my mechanic didn't replace the berrings, he said he didn't need to, ok... so I return the berrings and make my 6 hr drive from LA to SF, make it fine, driving my GF home didn't make 1 mile from home made a sharp turn, a large grinding / pop noise formed, car wouldn't accelerate. panic'd, good thing I turned into a residential district when it died. took the wheel off, the right front drive shaft is making a HORRIBLE noise whenever drive is engaged, and the car cannot hold itself in park withhout the e-brake. the noise / grinding is coming from the Driving Shaft. Is there a way I can fix this cheaply? I asked the AAA guy that was going to tow it (decided not to because I can't get work done on new years) and he said it was the berrings or the transmission, hoping for the first rather then the latter. any ideas what it might be, and if I might be able to fix it cheaply / by myself? thanks.
  17. Just wanted to make sure this was okay. I drive between college and my hometown every couple of months, this involves about 5-6 hrs of diving on the interstate 5 in california, I love to go fast, my 87 GL, does not. so when I hit ~5k rpm or 85+ mph, the steering wheel and car start to shake / vibrate, is there anyway I can fix this or is it just normal? also, one more problem, my AC belt SCREAMS on the freeway, is there any easy way to tighten / fix this myself and easily? thanks.
  18. 87 GL, ~88k mi. I think I'm the lowest!
  19. Since I've fallen in love of appreciation of my 87 GL after finding this forum, I was curious if it would be possible to upgrade the old analog dash to a digital dash (If i can even find one) I mean, with the wiring headers it seems like it wouldn't be that difficult of a task?
  20. I was curious on how people are doing the 4 lug to 5 lug conversions...
  21. Which roof scoop / skirts did you use? I've been looking to use some.... ugly front end on the GL
  22. Thanks to Skip, I got the diagram, one problem, I've never seen one so I have no clue what goes where, the only thing I can infer is where the antenna goes http://img153.echo.cx/img153/6776/radiowiringdia6yw.jpg Theres the Diagram http://img242.echo.cx/img242/2332/untitled3tt.jpg Thats the colors of each pin-out if someone could tell me which color goes to which on the pin-outs, that'd be awesome. Thanks!
  23. A mod was going to scan the guide for me and send it to me via email, what happened to them? I had to delete their name because my PM box was too full
