  1. Ok I have a loyale and it is really a dog, It's just plain slow. It is lifted 4'' but it has 195/70/14 tires on it. It barely can use 5th gear on the freeway and climbing hills is really difficult for it soo.... What is the easiest engine swap to do on a 92 loyale? and can it pass smog? I was thinking about the er27 just for it's torque. But I'm worried about the wiring of it. Also are their websites or how to's on such a swap? Ideas thoughts? I'm just looking at the possiblities.
  2. Well I don't know what happened or what it was, but it is gone. go figure. And usually I'm nice to it, It hardly sees 4k rpm. I simply don't know what happened to it but I'm watching all gauges real close... :-\ thanx for all the input
  3. Car sat for 2 days maybe if that, and it didn't smell like coolant or oil but something else. not sure what though. oil was in the throttle body and it came out of the exhuast ports as well. the hood scope is a homebuilt one so aftermarket i guess. It also stopped smoking, eventually around like 4 pm or so. I just don't get it. dosen't smoke at all today go figure.
  4. ok I had an attack by gremlins this morning. the wagon is a 92 loyale 4wd d/r 5spd with only 168k on it, just breaking in right? Well I start it up this morning and it billows white smoke out the tailpipe. I mean lots of it! I filled my front yard and my neighbor's in 2 minutes, and then oil pours out of the exhuast ports and starts dripping on the ground! There is oil in the intake system, coming from the pcv i assume. I turn it back on and it smokes but not nearly as bad, but no oil drips (I have one of the few subies that normally dosen't leak) I replaced the pcv valve and it no longer smokes but it wasn't bad in the first place... I am clueless as to what happend to my wagon any thoughts ideas? It does have a functional hood scoop... I wonder if water got in their somehow... i'm in cali so it doesn't get real wet over here, and it didn't smell like coolant or water. I'm stumped....
  5. well I got the tires replaced, (one was out of round, and when removed the noise decreased, but it is still there) I rotated tires and the noise never changed. so I don't think it's wheels or tires at this point. I have checked the disc to hub bolts and they were tight, I also shook the wheel and it seems to be tight so i don't think it's bearings. I have not actually pulled the bearings apart but it dosen't feel like it is loose. A little thing i noticed today was that this noise occurs often between shifts on the highway or freeway, or if their is no load being applied to the axle, a.k.a neutral/coasting. does this help any? I will be checking the hub splines tomorow to see if they are stripping but beyond this i'm not sure what it is. I thank you all for the replies.
  6. I'm sorrry i should have specified which pin i was talking about. it is the inner roll pin next to the tranny which hold it from lateral movement. since i did a recent 2wd to 4wd conversion i could have left this pin out, but i didn't. if only that was the problem.... I have torqued it and triple checked it. the castle nut is not loose on any wheel. I appreciate the prompt replies, It's just not a castle nut, i wish it was that easy! any other thoughts? ideas? jokes? I'm up for anything
  7. checked the castle nut, it was tight as a drum, cotter pin and everything. would it not wobble all of the time, if the castle nut was loose? I'm just wondering because this noise is intermittent and unpredictable. but the cone washer is cracked, maybe thats it?... even better news is that the car shakes badly when ever i hit the brakes as if the rotors were warped. problem is they where fine before the lift was installed. Am i just missing something? wait... *checks for roll pin in axle..* nope its there... I checked all the bolts for the front of the car. everything is tight so i'm stumped. Do cv's make this type of noise/vibration?
  8. Ok subie guys tell me whats going on with my subie wagon 92 loyale 4wd converted As I'm driving sometimes it feels as if my right front wheel is falling off! it will make a wobble noise and some minor vibration, then it disappears. I can't make it happen and i can't predict it. I am stumped to what would cause this type of noise! I have tighten everything on the front of the car and the noise is still there. My only guesses are a bad cv axle or bad tie rods. but i don't think tie rods would make this kind of noise. that and it is not all of the time just off and on. their is also no play in the wheel itself. so i think bearings aren't it. do cv's make these kind of symptoms? any help would be great!
  9. I'm sorry, I was excited with my possible epiphany and didn't think to use the search feature. dooh!
  10. Maybe something to think about for you crazy ones out there but here is an idea. 1.) Subaru is owned by fugi heavy industries right? and all subies have a fuji diff in them right? well us datsun guys use subie diffs in our datsun 510s because some subies have 4.44 gears which makes for a great street rocket. These just bolt right in. 2.) nissan/datsun use fuji diffs in all of their vehicles from 68-87 i believe... 79-83 280zx's have 3.90 gears and are designated as the r-200. these are indestructible diffs with a rating of 450 ft lbs. 84-89 300zx's have 3.70 lsd diffs. I have heard of nissan making a 3.90 lsd but don't know what car it's out of. could one of these be made to work in a subie? and is lsd worth while?
  11. Ok good just checking, I don't have alot of subie experience, so I don't know what these cars can take. yet...
  12. Ok I have to ask this because it worried me a little. I built a bumper for the front of my wagon using 5 inch C channel. and for the brackets, 3/8 flat bar. I then bolted it using grade 8 bolts to the stock bumber holes. My question is will the stock bumber holes take the abuse from a wench and pulling other out? or do i need to connect to diffrent areas? like the lower frame or something. I dont need my front end being ripped off, if you know what I mean.
  13. For now i have a 3 foot flat bar which is 3/8" thick bolted to the floor pans. 2 bolts per pan. Also the driveshaft bearing's mounting holes are offset a 1/4" like this _ - so I put a 3/4" spacer under one and an inch spacer under the other, bolted it to the flat bar and bolted it to the floor pans. works great from what I can tell. Problem with the struts being shorter is that i didn't change struts. They are stock struts. The rears only have honda springs nothing else. they are 2wd struts all around. so am i missing something? is the rear suspension different in a gl?
  14. Thanx man I appriciate that, saves me some time. sorry about your your offroad trip gone bad. I'd throw another motor in. junkyards are your friend!
  15. Ok so I changed my 2wd 92 loyale to 4wd d/r 5 speed, which is just awesome. but I have a few little problems. Maybe you guys can help me. And if anyone wants to know how to do a 2wd to 4wd conversion pm or what not email: crashed240z@yahoo.com 1.) wagon has honda springs, but it has stock 2wd springs in the front. after the conversion it sits really high in the back! It has a serious rake to it, which wasn't their before. Is the gl rear suspension different then a loyale's? or are my front springs too soft? 2.) Then the d/r tranny is missing some electronic sender or something because my check engine light came on right after installation. their is a 2 wire plug from the car's harness which the 2wd tranny had and the d/r dosen't. anyone know what it is, or how to rewire it, or make the light shut off? any help in this matter is much appreciated!
  16. OK rebello240zx is in on the group buy. i need it for a 92 loyale wagon air,ps, if it matters. 4" moderate clearance please. it is a daily driver after all....
  17. ok what model and year does a daul range transmission come from? i want to lift and offroad a 92 loyale. but on a side note, i was only thinking of this because the loyale needs alittle bit more power. does anyone have experience or know about no2 on a sooby? i was thinking about a 50 shot possibly 75. not sure. will the ea82 take without blowing up, or will i have to build it up for no2. just a curious.
  18. ok I've got a few questions concerned with lifting my loyale wagon. 1. I have seen the diy lifts that people are doing and from what it sounds like i should just buy the byb ozified kit. I could do it myself, but i don't know about the steering or how the struts are spaced. i assume the spacers go on top of the rubber hat and the struts require longer bolts but im not exactly sure how to do this. pound them out i assume. how is the steering spaced? (Im a datsun guy i have no clue about lifting, you might have noticed) 2. i don't want to trim any body panels if i dont have to. tire size is up in the air whatever fits with a 4 inch lift and no body trimming. but what size im not sure any help is great in this area. i plan on doing the 6 lug conversion 15" i believe. 3. this is my primary transportation, is it wise for me to do these mods to it for the possible offroad weekend journey? 4. has anyone stripped a hub out before? i did it after i jumped the wagon a few too many times... just curious. any help ideas info etc. is greatly appreciated.
  19. Hey there once again. I am having problems with getting a 92 Loyale service manual. The dealer down here says it is not available. I have tried ebay with no luck and have searched the internet to the best of my ability, to no avail. Does anyone know where i can get one or I'm i stuck with alldata or a cd? Or does anyone know of an alternative book that is pretty good? (Tried chilton, awful book, useless in every way. good for mopping up oil spills though.) Is haynes any better? or am i screwed? T Thankx to all once again
  20. Ok so let me get this straight. It's better if im above 3k then below it? I have been trying to go as slow as possible to rev lower. (as in 2700 rpm 55mph behind semi trucks) and from the plentiful responses it seems that is the wrong course of action. what about launching the car? i shift at 3k should i rev it up more or what? Anyways I'll try 3300 and see what happens. And yes wires, cap, rotor, and o2 are brand new. Thanxs to all for the prompt responses.
  21. Hi I just aquired a fwd 92 loyale wagon. I'm cuirous as to the best way to attain better fuel economy. I get about 31 mpg, which is good but my dad's nissan maxima "95" gets 30.2 mpg. I assume the close numbers are due to the fact of the soob rpm at 3k and him being at 2k. Is their anyway to change the 5 speed trans with a different, taller geared one? did subaru make a trans with taller gears? or is it possible to convert it to 4wd then remove the front shafts and swap with another r160? I know nissan used the same r160 diff (made by fuji heavy industry) could i use one of those or do they simply not go lower then 3.90s? The car on the freeway going 62 mph does 3k rpm does that sound right? car currently has 3.90s I'm a datsun guy and i am not fimilar with subarus what so ever warnings, help, or quirks you can let me know about would be helpful and much appreciated. I have already dealt with the infamous timing belt, right cv axle, valve cover leaks, trans leaks, and an intermitent starter problem. thanks to all, This site has been very helpful, the people seem real nice and just crazy about subarus. just what I'm looking for. keep em running
