  1. Thanks for the info also. I will have to try the lysol trick sometime. Mine isn't too bad, but it still leaves a lot to be desired.
  2. I know that smell. Sort of a musty stale odor. Does it stink on heat also? Mine only stinks on vent. Heat...gone. AC...gone. I would expect something growing in the ducts is causing it. Don't know about a fix though. Anyone else care to take a guess?
  3. I think I'm still drooling. DeLoreans are amazing cars. Never seen one in person, though. I'd love to have one. Alas, I am poor. They're reliabily track record isn't so good, so I think I'll stick to my Subies. Plus...who wants to steal an ol' Subaru.
  4. Did that article mention a Subaru diesel? I think it did. It's said to be introduced shortly after the 2008 Impreza. I wonder if that's just for the European market, though. Knowing my luck, we probably won't get it here. At least not yet. I too hope Subaru sticks to its roots. As it is, I think they are a little pricey, but still within reason. Especially considering their reliability.
  5. Hmm.... I'm not sure. They look the same (at least the 2.2 and the 1.8), but could be different. I'm assuming you want to see if swapping coils makes your no-start problem move, right? That seems like a good idea to me, but I'm not sure if the coils are the same, internally. (Anyone else know?)
  6. No, you didn't hallucinate. It's in my owner's manual too. Page 11-2, Specifications. It says "Engine Model: EJ18S". No idea what it means, though. My car isn't California spec, so that's ruled out. I'm thinking it might just be a typo. There certainly are a handful in there. ______________________ 1993 Impreza L FWD 192k miles
  7. Exactly. My 93 Impreza still feels new to me as well. It's in good shape, body wise, and with a 192k miles she still runs like a champ, albeit a champ with a leaky rear oil seal. (That smoke really scares people though, doesn't it?) I'd certainly trust this car on a long-distance drive more than something off the Garbage Motors assembly line. Subarus just age much more gracefully. My last car was an 89 Crapalier. By the time it was 10, it was on the brink of throwing a rod. Sue's engine is still quiet as a mouse, albeit a leaky mouse. All she asks for is a little love an an occasional quart of oil. Not bad for a 13 year old car. Here's to another 13 years. *rasise glass*
  8. Sue is very much insulted. You should never call a lady "old.":lol: As has been stated, all Subarus built from 1990 thru today share the same basic engine/transmission design. So yes, 1990 and up is "new school." *Edit* Excepting Loyales, made from 1990-94. They are EA82's and thefefore "old school." EJ=new school. EA=old school.
  9. My ej18 Impreza and I feel left out. It's got 187k. "I'm just as good as any ej22," says it.
  10. According to Subaru.com, torque split is 45/55 front to rear, until slip detected. I'm pretty sure this is computer-controlled. I don't think you can manually change it. Any other questions will have to be directed to newer Sube owners. I have an older '93 myself and have no experience and little knowledge of the newer models. I just had some free time and looked up those figures. The Outback 3.0 R seems like a good car, although I don't really see the need for AWD and VDC either. For some reason, I just don't like computers controlling anything in my car. My car tracks along just fine on slick roads, and it's not even AWD...no ABS either. There is no safety device better than experience and good driving skills. Just my .02 which is probably only really worth a quarter of a penny now due to inflation.
  11. That's exactly what this car is doing. Up hill with the throttle on a bit. Hmm....sounds like it's the coil. Would checking the resistance as my Chiltons states do any good? Or just replace and hope? Thanks so much.
  12. No, you have to have a code reader. Some parts stores, like Auto Zone, will do this for free, however.
  13. It's a long shot, but are the coils on the '93 ej18 and the '96 ej22 the same? They look the same, but I don't suppose they are. If they were, I could swap 'em and see if the problem moves too. Just looking for clues. I guess it's not as expensive as I thought though...$71 on 1stsbuarparts. Thanks.

  15. Well, it's not my car. It's my mother-in-law's '96 Impreza ej22. She doesn't have a computer, so I'm posting this question. Well, it started when she was going up hill, under load. The engine lost power, as if it were only running on 3 cyls (probably was) and the CEL started flashing. After she got to the top of the hill, the problem corrected itself and the car ran fine. She took it to Auto Zone and had the codes pulled. Misfire Cyl #2. The car did this before, back in the summer, shortly after she got the car. After months of troubleshooting, she finaly took it to the stealership and had them look it over. They cleaned the throttle body and TIGHTENED THE SPARK PLUGS. Well, it seems her regular mechanic forgot to tightent them enough when he replaced them. They are NGK plugs. The wires were replaced then too, although they are not OEM, as was the knock sensor, as it went kurpluee at the same time. She said she would pick up the OEM wires. Still, I do not see how this could be causing it. The problem was cured for over 6 months and just suddenly came back. She drove up the same hill this morning and said it ran fine.:-\ The car's got everyone stumped. As I said before, the car did this same thing about 6-8 months ago but seemed to be cured. The code pulled was always Misfire #2 except for one occasion when it was misfire #3. Other than that, the problem has been very consistent. If anyone has any ides about what could be going on, please respond. Any suggestions will be welcomed. Thanks.
  16. Welcome to the board. The pre-1996 2.2's really have few problems to speak of. I say pre-1996 because they are non-interference. So if a timing belt happens to snap, you just slap a new one on and you're good to go. If this happens with a 1997 or later, CRUNCH.......They have interference type engines. My 93 has the somewhat anemic 1.8. However, the engines are virtually identical, just different bore(??) I've had mine for 2 years now and have so far had no problems. My 1.8 FWD (Yes, I said front-wheel-drive.) also gets good mpg. Don't get your hopes up for good mpg with a 2.2 AWD though. You just won't get it. Imprezas only had the 1.8 for several years, and I'm not sure when the 2.2 became available, so make sure you get what you want. The engines are pretty much trouble free though. When taken care of they will last many hundreds of thousands of miles. Um....AWD was an option until '96,so make sure the car has it. If it's an auto, watch out for torque bind. The 5spd AWD doesn't suffer from this. Buyers' guides...this board. We all highly recommend a Subaru. lol. The best service manual is the factory one, but they are a bit pricey, I believe. I have a Chiltons. I have heard that the Haynes is better. Perhaps both Chiltons and Haynes or the factory service manual. That's about all I can think of. Again, welcome to the board.
  17. I agree about the delivery guys. The UPS trucks are usually exceeding the posted speed limit when they fly pass my house. (yeah, right... where I live the speed limit it not posted.. lol...Since it's a secondary road, I think that makes it an assumed 30mph here.) Althogh some of the body panels are strikingly similar to aluminum foil on most modern cars, Subies not excluded,, the frames of these cars seem to be pretty sound. Yes, you are also lucky that no lights got taken out. I hit a deer about 3 weeks ago that took out my healdight assembly. Youch!!! $178 dollars rush delivered from 1st subaru parts. Course I ordered the wrong one (well, the correct one according to the illustration. There was no guide to tell me how they defined driver's side/passenger side, though. I learned that the hard way.) They understood, though, and agreed to exchange it. They called me last Monday and said they had received the one I sent back and would send out the correct one. And I waited...and waited. And I called them back yesterday. After searching the records, they found that it was NOT shipped out on Monday. They said they would ship it out immediately. I am still waiting on it. So, if you order from them, make sure you order the right part. It got here right away the first time, but the return process is taking an eternity. *end rant* (Again, I appoligize for my mind's behavior. ) Again, good luck.
  18. Yeeeeks.....I really don't like the looks of that wheel, although I can't say I know what's causing it either. Getting all of that repaired is going to be no fun at all, for you or the bank account, and the legalaties will probably be 10 times worse. Thank goodness no one was hurt. I'm very, very lucky that I've never been involved in a multi-vehicle accident. I have come much too close for comfort on several occasions though. Other drivers on the wrong side of the road come to mind. This happened this morning on my way home. I, too, was mildly surprised to see a full-sized pickup truck on my side of the road, the driver apparently fiddling with something on the floor (aka. no head in sight scenario). When he looked up, he apparently was mildly surprised as well and swerved back onto his side. *end rant* An excuse to give Subie that big old dump trunk horn I have lyring around, perhaps... That would certainly get people's attention better than the little "meeep meeep" stock horn! (Please excuse my mind's inappropriate behavior. I've been awake for too long.) Anyhoo...I wish you, your wife, and your injured Subie the best of luck.
  19. Welcome to the board! You'll find this site is a great place for any sube-related info. As you can see, most of us here are Subaru addicts. (We don't want a cure!) I drive a '93 Impreza FWD w/ 184k miles myself . If I would have time to look around, I would have gotten an AWD, but the car kinda fell into my lap when my old Chevy Cavalier (read Shove-It Crapalier) died last year. I'm relatively new to Subes but have quickly learned to love them. Notes: 1.8L FWD = less $$ on gas.
  20. Hmmm. My common sense says to use the one in the middle (#1) and fill from the other end of the hose, but I don't know for sure. I'm sure some of the experts can better clarify this.
  21. Finally got some pics of the battle scars. I didn't get the crushed, shattered headlight assembly that cost me $178 shipped to replace. The headlight seems to have taken the worst of the damage, but the hood is probably going to be the worst and most expensive to fix/replace though. By the way, does anyone know where I can get the side molding that runs down the middle of the door? As you can see, it's got duct tape over the holes to keep water from running down inside the door. (Those paws in the pics belong to my camera-hog cats that like to walk all over the car and get muddy prints all over it.)
  22. I'm driving a 93 Impreza with a sheet metal eyepatch over the left headlight. And yes, I'm thankful it wasn't a moose. I checked eBay. They don't have one. 1stsubaruparts.com had the assembly for $136, so I went ahead and ordered it. I would normally have shopped around, but I was in a hurry to get it. (Thanks to dreaded standard time, it gets dark much too early now.) I did call the local junkyard. They had no subies.:-\ Thanks.
  23. Well, I hit a deer last night. No one was hurt but the car didn't walk away without a scratch. The left fender was caved in so that the door wouldn't open. I popped it out, but it's still dented. The corner of the hood is folded down and dented in the middle. The headlight is gone. The lens shattered. So, I need to get a new headlight assembly. The dealer here wants around $200 for it. Is there any place I can get this for cheaper? I will deal with the body work later, but I need a headlight now. Any suggestions? Thanks.
