  1. I found a 93 Impreza Sport Wagon AWD for sale. It's got around 160k on it and the asking price is $1500. Sounds like a good deal to me and it matches up with Blue Book value. I'm going to go look at and drive the car tomorrow. Assuming everything is in good shape, does this sound like a good deal to you as well? Also, is there anything in particular I should look for besides the basics like fluids, etc.? *EDIT* Sorry, I forgot to ask this question. What is the difference between the standard wagon and the Sport wagon anyway? Thanks.
  2. I don't really know anything about scanners/readers, but if that check engine light is bothering you, take it to AutoZone and they will pull the codes for free.
  3. Thanks for your help. Crutchfield says the 6 1/2 inch speakers will fit. I can finally get a decent stereo system.
  4. Does anyone know what size the stock seakers in a 93 Impreza sedan are? I would like to know whithout taking my door apart. I found a deal from Walmart, a set of four Pioneer 6 1/2 inch speakers along with a CD player/radio for $98.00. It's certainly not the top of the line, but it's all I need. Both of my rear speakers died, and one front one rattles - time to upgrade. If you know what size the stock speakers are, let me know.
  5. I have a 1993 Impreza with original transmission. As far as I know, no work has been done on it, but I am the second owner. There was no paperwork to suggest that any transmission work has ever been done. So far it has lasted 180k with no problems yet. -Knocks on Wood-
  6. My bad. My earlier suggestion will actually make your problem worse! Listen to the others. They are correct. I'm sorry - I am used to OBD I.
  7. Unhook the negative battery terminal for at least one minute, then reconnect. This should reset the computer.
  8. I've been getting misfire codes and poor mpg. I have already replaced plugs, wires, air filter, etc, with no difference. I would like to run some SeaFoam through the engine, as various other threads have suggested before trying the expensive repairs. What exactly is the procedure for cleaning the intake with SeaFoam? I have seen threads that say to pour it in the PCV valve area, and others that say to pull it in with a vacuum. What do you suggest? Detailed instructions or pics would be very helpful for either method. I have a 1996 Impreza 2.2. Oh, can this really cause any damage to the car? I read somewhere that all the junk it blows out of the motor can gum up ur cat. Thanks.
  9. Do you think it could be the timing? 'Cause that's what I'm starting to think. The knock sensor died on me about a month ago, and I replaced it. It still seems to run rough though, but only at idle. Just today it through another misfire code, probably the 5th one in the past few months. I've already replaced the spark plugs and wires, too. The air filter checks out. The O2 sensors could be a problem too, I suppose. Honestly, I'm stumped. My best guess is the timing theory.
  10. Thanks. You saved me a lot of trouble and money. The A/C still works fine, so I don't see any point in converting it yet. Thanks a lot.
  11. I live on a country road, and there is only one other Subaru (a Baja I think) on my road. That's not really what I would expect, either, because my road gets slick.......I mean SLICK in the winter. I think the road crews ignore it. lol ------------------------------------ 1993 Impreza 1.8L - 181k. miles
  12. Bottom line: Cheapos squeak. They could need cleaned, but my guess is they are cheapo brake pads.
  13. I need to convert my A/C system from R12 to R134a. How much can I excpect this to cost? I will probably be having the work done at my local garage, not a chain garage like Midas, or at a dealer, unless this is something that a backyard mechanic such as myself could do. The only thing I have ever done with A/C's is add refrigerant, and I've heard that converting a system involves a good bit of work. I'm farily sure I could do the work myself, but I have a feeling that it would make more since to have the garage do it. I would appreciate a rough figure from anyone who has had this done before. *EDIT* I though I should go ahead and ask this question too. The reason that I need to know about an A/C conversion is that I am going to be pulling my engine to do some repairs. I assumed that this meant unhooking the A/C, therefore causing the loss of the refrigerant in the system. However, I read in another thread that with the Legacy, you can just unbolt the compressor from the engine and set it aside without breaking the lines. Can this be done with the Impreza? Thanks. ------------------------------- 1993 Subaru Impreza 1.8L - 181k miles
  14. Haven't checked timing but seems to run fine. Will calculate MPG. If problem continues will check timing. Thanks.
  15. My 1996 Impreza AWD has been getting terrible gas milage. I've had the car for not quite a year now, and it's been doing this since I got it. Normally, it wouldn't be such a problem, but with gas prices over $2.20 a gallon here (For Regular - Ouch!) its starting to be a real pain in the wallet. I have tried just about everything. I replaced the air filter, plugs, wires, etc... I even ran some fuel injector cleaner through it. The fuel injector cleaner did make the car peppier and run better, but it did nothing for the gas milage. The only thing that makes a difference is running high octane gas. When I run Super 93 in it, the gas milage is fine, about where it should be. As soon as I switch back to Regular 87, the car goes back to its regular gas gulping self. I just can't seem to figure this one out. It runs fine on any octane rating but only gets good milage with Super 93. I have tried getting my gas at different stations but that has done no good either. If anyone has any ideas they would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  16. Definately get snow tires. I tried running the all seasons on my AWD Impreza. It felt like I was ice skating on the roads! I put snow and ice tires on it and it made all the 4WD trucks on the road look like lightweights. The thing goes like a tank in the snow and ice with snow tires; it goes skating with all seasons. And about remembering how to drive in snow..... If you've forgotten how, you'll fit in! At least where I'm from, everyone (but me, of course;)) forgets how to drive in the stuff over the summer! For the first couple snows of the season they drive like they've gone insane! (Driving way too fast and skidding off the roads, etc..) I just hate it when I'm chuggin' up a slick hill in my Subie (of couse i'm not having any trouble gettin' up it) and I get passed by a guy driving a rear wheel driven car going like 50mph trying to get up the hill, though! For that reason, in places that get a lot of snow an ice, everyone should have to buy Subarus! (In my opinion, Subarus are the greatest car ever made and rule the world!)
  17. I use Castrol GTX 20W50 in the summer and Castrol GTX 10W30 in the winter. I used to use Valvoline, but I switched to Castrol and my engine noise decreased considerably. Castrol GTX all the way! I use a Fram filter, but after reading that article I may be changing that. Anyone know of a high quality filter? ________________ 1993 Impreza FWD - 180k miles and still going as strong as ever!
  18. Sounds like a heat shield somewhere to me. Mine does the same thing only in the lower rpms, usually around idle. Anyway, sounds like a rattling heat shield is causing your trouble.
  19. I just called my mechanic to find out what brand of plugs/wires he put in. It turns out that he only replaced the plugs! I am going to replace the wires and I'll see what happens.
  20. Will try. I suppose there really are a lot of things that could be wrong. It could be plugs/wires, possibly the valves, or maybe even a fuel injector. I will try replacing wires and plugs again.
  21. Hi. I bought my first Subaru, a 1996 Subaru Impreza LX AWD less than a year ago. About 2 months ago, I had a problem with my engine. The check engine light came on, and I did notice (barely) that it was misfiring, so I took it into the shop to have the codes checked. It came up as "Misfire - Cylinder #2." I had the plugs/wires replaced, and it seemed to clear up. Then shortly after that, the check engine light came on again. That time the code for a faulty knock sensor came up. I had the sensor replaced, and my Subaru seemed to run better than ever. Then yesterday the check engine light came on again! I did not notice anything wrong, but I took it into the shop anyway. It came up once more as "Misfire - Cylinder #2." Since plugs/wires have already been replaced, mechanic seems to think it is a serious problem, probably in the valves?. Also, according to the service records, this misfire problem has happened before and was never completely resolved. (Found this out after I bought the car - Arghhh!) Like I said, my mechanic thinks the problem is in the valves, and he said it would probably cost a fortune to fix. Do you think this could be the problem, and how much would it probably cost to repair? Please help! Thanks, A Newbie Update: I was reading some other posts, and I though you should know that each time I got the BLINKING CEL which then stopped blinking and remained lit.
