I am trying to make a decision about what color to paint it. My dad wants me to paint in the new Baja Yellow color. We have also thought about flat black or the WRX blue color. What ever color i end up choosing it will have a flame job on it some where. The guy who is painting it has been wanting to do a flame job (i.e. he has never done flames before ) But thats part of the deal since he is not getting a dime for the labor. I am going to start sanding today. What do you guys think? -

danrenfroe2016 replied to kingwill's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
I am not sure about the 15s but I just put 14"x6" PUG wheels on my 80 BRAT and it worked great, the offset is just perfect. I was afraid of the 15" PUGs... Tell us how it goes. -Daniel -

Oil Pan Problem
danrenfroe2016 replied to danrenfroe2016's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Ok, will try to get it off again, the bolt is rounded and then some, the best closed end wrench didnt get it off. I may need to take it to my shop and get them to weld a larger stud to it to get the torque neccessary to back it out, the transmission bolt was just like this, but it was such a large diameter, they i was able to get it free with a wrench and 3' cheater pipe. no damage, just an idiot tighend it up to much. Quick Boot???? Where do i get a quick boot from. This seams to be my best bet at i have a replacment axle allready, but would like to save it until necessary. thanks! -Daniel -
1980 Brat with 1979 EA71 motor 4WD Well, Tried to change the oil today. The OIL plug is stuck, I mean really really stuck. I need to get an oil pan from someone if possible. Also went extreme suburb greenbelt crawling (hey, I live in suburbia, grass floodplains / drainage areas is about at good as it gets!) But the subaru did very well, I went up very very steep grades (wet grass) and it pulled up very easily. Was very fun, 4WD works really great. Also one of my CV joints boots has a small tear in it, It must have happend in the alst three weeks, as when i bought it it had no tears. (was torn before i went offroad) Is there replacment retrofit boots that can be installed without removing the axle? later -Daniel

OK, I have a 1980 Brat 4wd, The right front wheel is nearly 90° to the pavment. The left front wheel is farther out on the bottom of the tire than the top (leaning in toward the engine). measuring at the top fo the tire, one tire sits 1" out farther than the other side. (i'll put pictures up soon) The right front fender has been rebent back in place by others before I bought the car, (i think it was wrecked a little at one point.) So looking at the brat the only way to fix camber is to have my body shop pull / push the strut tower mount (as in bend the frame) to get the camber corrected. Is my thinking correct??? Or could the strut just be bent out of shape as well? Not that this camber issue bothers me much, but it would be nice in the new tires i bought would wear evenly. Thanks. Also, My brat looks much better now. Got some 14" x 6" PUG wheels from a 505???? (what ever that is) from a nice guy in Washington State. Put much better tires on the Brat today. now it looks good, and the tires "fill up" the wheel wells a little better, but still plenty of clearance. I will put pictures of before and after up soon. -Daniel

Am I missing a skid plate?
danrenfroe2016 replied to danrenfroe2016's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
I think I will just get my fab shop to fab a 1/4" thick aluminum plate that I can bolt with ubolts to the existing rails. (I work for a construction company.) Thanks for the info. -
I think I may be missing something. Maybe a skid plat, there is four screws on the bottom of the push bar. or if there is not a stock peice, it will have one made... btw... I have been driving it for two weeks and managed 26.5 MPG. Seems to work well. I bought some pug wheels from this guy, and hope to have new tires soon as i have all diffrent offsets on my current wheels and the car looks really funny with different offsets. and it snowed today in Dallas, Texas on April 7th. very strange! Thanks! -Daniel

got my new 1980 Brat
danrenfroe2016 replied to danrenfroe2016's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
OK! The BRAT is alive.... I drove it to work two days in a row, everthing is working great! 65 miles so far... except for rattles! loud raddle near the shifter raddles as long as the car is vibrating from the road or engine vibration. sounds like under the passanger floor board or right at the base of the shifter. Any suggestions? i am changing the trannie oil tonight as it was overfilled and looked funny, I think someone added some additive to it for some reason. (shifts just fine.) Ok, I need Some advice. Wheels and tires... I really dont like the 13" rims, there are only a few tires. DO the 14" pug wheels fit the gen 1 brat? Does anyone have some 14" PUG wheels to sell? I need to do something soon as my tires are all old and cracked, i am afraid to drive on them too long and i dont want to replace 13" tires. Thanks. -Daniel -

OK, Got it running Very good. Worked on it for about 6 hours on Saturday. Had to clean out the little vacuum splitter thing that mounts to the manifold, it was completly clogged. I also ripped out all the carpet (it was toast) and the insulation as it was all wet. I cleaned out the entire interior of the car. Looks much better now except for the missing carpet and seats. Questions! 1. What do you guys do for seats? I have seen some on this board with newer subaru seats and such. ok, only ONE this time... Thanks! -Daniel -

Wow Looks Great! I going the same way, NEW style Badges. Is the big subaru logo glued on? Or small holes? Because I want to get rid of mine as well. I want to go with the lettering from a 2002 WRX. Thanks.
