  1. Alright another sedan!!! Welcome, looks like you found a really nice car, congrats.
  2. I agree with suberdave. I had the "external hood release" feature for a bout 4 months till I got around to replace it. This is a good post about how to operate it without the cable: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=31328&highlight=hood+latch I'd find another wagon to pull the cable from. Check the nub on the end of the cable that goes into the latch, and the cable condition. It's a straight forward replacement, the onlything that may slow you down is feeding it through the rubber grommit through the firewall. But really it's a quick fix.
  3. Alright, I feel better, I'm not missing something terribly obvious. Thanks for the tips. I probably won't make it back today, but maybe sunday. I'll keep ya updated.
  4. Ok, I saw two turbo wagons at pull n save. <<Caution, noob @ work>> one has the rear tires off, so i can see the calipers, they look ok at best. But the thing is I can't get the wheels to stop spinning to remove the castle nut and 4 hub bolts. I'm a noob, so go easy, but shouldn't I be able to put the d/r 5spd into 4 low and stop the back tires from spinning? I can spin the tire and watch the drive shaft turn under the car, maybe there is something up with the clutch. So should I go fo brick on the brake pedal kind of thing? Oh wait, I think pull n save drains the fluids. Lil help here please. the other has the wheels on, so I can't see the calipers too well. But on this one the rear diff has been totally taken out. So the axels are not connected on that end. Again, the wheels turn freely. How do i go about tearing into this? I wedged another tire under there but it's not tight enough. Two votes for the brick? Am I just missing something really obvious here:confused:
  5. Pull n Save had 16 different subarus, seriously 16. I didn't see any EA81's or XT's or Legacy heated mirrors, or vanagons. Beefaru, they did have a 93 Loyale Sedan, but that was the only loyale. I did see a whole load of 85 to 88 GL & DLs with dual ranges, including two turbos. One 90 Justy(5spd pushbutton 4wd), One 83 Hatch(Blue/White, EA71, 5spd, 2wd, no rad or front axel). I found two really new tires on rims, Mohave R/S, there more of a generic brand, but with almost full tread and at $10 a pop, who can complain, I got one wearing a little thin anyway. Grabbed a hood release cable and headlight too. So no dice this week, but I'll go again soon.
  6. Ok, I updated the list on my 1st post. starkiller: anymore info on that console, what would it come out of? got a pic?
  7. Good Point, thanks ed. I've never done a bleed or mc before, but I know how important it is, so I'll make sure to read up.
  8. Thanks everyone, I'm going to grab the 1st clean set I can find. I'm going to try and put in a new master cylinder at the same time, so I'll just prepare for a brake bleeding extravaganza.
  9. Thanks for your replys! It seems to be that both will fit and work properly, correct? I guess bigger discs and calipers aren't a bad thing, unless there is a problem in the proportioning.
  10. So now that I work over by Pull in Save on I-70 and Peoria I figured I'd try to do a regular friday scouting run. I'll check out what's there and report back with things like; year, model, engine, trans, color. So if anyone is looking to find a specific part, they'll know whats there on that weekend. I looked at Beefaru's post from last week and it looks like this is who's looking for what: Shoup - power antenna for an XT DrKrazy - heated mirror for a 93-94 legacy, drivers side Korean - xt6 tranny Shawn W - Vanagon Phil / Shoup / Caboobaru- EA81 Slim AC fans Beefaru - post 90 Loyale Caboobaru - 3-door EA82 coupes, tanish/grey interior parts, and passenger side rear quarter glass, driver side tail light. If anyone has something they want me to keep an eye out for, within reason please, let me know. Otherwise I'll report back with what kind of soobs they've got.
  11. I've searched a bunch and read the USRM article on the rear disc conversion. It seems pretty straight forward once you have all the parts. My question comes in on what donar to get the parts, I understand it has to be turbo. I have a 92 Loyale Sedan 4wd 5spd. So I should be able to get the discs from any 4wd 5spd turbo ea82? Or does it have to be a 4wd 5spd turbo ea82 Sedan? I only saw one post that talks about the sedans having smaller calipers. What is the difference in disc/caliper size, and can the larger wagon size fit on the Loyale Sedan? http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=59469&page=2&highlight=rear+disc
  12. I was just about to leave, checked my e-mail to get the ph#, and low and behold, it's sold. Dang, what a run around this has been. Oh well, glad to be done with the whole deal anyway.
  13. The same person with the $500 wagon e-mailed me back. She relisted it on craigslist because the person she promised it to didn't show. Maybe it's me but the e-mails seem kind of desperate, so I think I'll make the trek up to Louisville to check it out. So it acts like it will start, but wont. Hmm, spark, fuel, & compression, there's a lot of could be's there. So if you were going to check out a car that wouldn't start, what would you check? CVs, Tires, brake pads, belt / hose condition, rust....any tips to check transmission condition?
  14. I can check pull n save someday this week, maybe fri. Doubtful, but who knows what you'll find there. I gotta scope out some wagon wheels anyway. Not to high jack, but I work by I-70 and Peoria. I've been thinking about doing a every friday walk through and posting what's there for anyone going on the weekends. Maybe this fri will be the 1st.
  15. I didn't find anything in here about the coil, so I went ahead with the procedure. I grouned the wire from the coil to the strut tower. unplugged the fuel pump fuse, and took out all the plugs. Here are the results: 1 - 115 3 - 110 2 - 100 4 - 100 Needless to say I'm pleased. For now my head gaskets are in tact.
  16. Ok, it looks like I'm on the right track, I feel better. This may be a stupid question, but I'll ask it in fear of being wrong. Does the ignition coil store any charge? Should I be careful when unplugging it? I think the coil is the only part of the igniton system I've never really messed with. I'd rather disconnect it all together then risk giant sparks or damaging the whole system.
  17. I’m going to give the sedan (92 Loyale) a compression test. I’ve never done this before and it seems like an odd procedure to me. Basically I’m going to disable the spark and fuel from going to the engine so all I’m left with is the pistons moving back and forth creating dry compression, yes? So here is the plan: When the car is cold. Disable the fuel pump by either disconnecting wires at the pump or taking out the fuse. Unplug the hose going to the fuel filter and place a catch bottle. Crank the car over a few times to rid remaining fuel from the line. Remove spark plugs. Take the wire coming from the coil and clip it to the strut tower bolt to complete a ground. Attach compression tester. With gas pedal all the way to the floor crank engine over for 4 cycles and record the highest reading. Repeat this step with other 3 cylinders. Repeat on all cylinders for comparison. Sound Right? Now after this point do I put everything back to normal, get the engine up to normal temperature and repeat the whole process? Another question I have is when or why do I put a few drops of oil into the spark plug holes? Is this just if the reading is low? Then if the reading comes back up after I add the oil is that good or bad or what does that indicate? I think that about covers it for now.
  18. I've got 4wd, just notr d/r, which I can live with.
  19. Lost out on both of these. Craigslists really knows how to move em'. The wagon is "promised" and the 87 GL wasn't listed by the time I got home. Oh well, maybe this is the subaru gods telling me to keep the sedan on the road. There needs to be a balence of 1 sedan for every 187 wagons or so.
  20. No word yet, but someone else just posted an 87 GL 4WD for $400, and it's pretty close to me. When it rains it pours!!
  21. craigslist is working its magic already, e-mail reply says someone is looking at it in the next hour, we'll see what happens.
  22. Cool! I sent them an e-mail back about it. I'm thinking about going some night this week, anyone want to come with? I gotta get a checklist going of things to look at when you can't drive a car. I figure a car that won't start that's offered for $500 obo is worth about $3 - $350.
  23. This is what I got as a response: "When you try to start it, it acts like it is going to start but wont."
  24. Shoup, ya beat me to it! Are you going to go check it out? If someone actually needs the car, I say go for it, otherwise I'll check into it more. Thanks for the offer jeff!
