81 passing lamp...

Featured Replies

Want to know if there is a control unit for the lamp, if so, where is it located on the car? The light works, door does not open. Checking continuity of motor in the mean time...

All other aspects of system work, dash lights, switches, etc.

on the dash , near the turn signal lever down where there is a hole on the dash on the flat part of it, near the light switch.

the relay is on the passenger right shock tower with all the other relays....it has a pink connector with like 5 or there abouts wires....

You might also try re-soldering the one of the connections on the front of the motor itself. The door on my '81 stopped opening and I re-soldered the green wire IIRC, and it works great now. If I am not mistaken this is a common problem on these units. Just disconnect the battery because at least one of the wires is hot.

Thanks all, I'll have my buddy at work check those items this weekend, he just bought a 91 loyale 4x and is playing with it instead. Yeah, bummer for his bro' that he isn't fixin the '81 though...

Any luck with fixing your passing light door? I've got the

same problem, light works, but door isn't opening.

Will follow these recommended checks, but I wanted to know if

you had any luck w/yours?

Any tips?

Thanks much

Had same issue with the '82. Pulled the unit and looked at the solder joints. Quite obvious that those were the problem on mine. Quick re-solder of joints and she works like a charm.

 ^ +1 This is the problem most of the time... though I did have the motor housing crack open on me once!

Nothing yet (that I know of), Little bro has his car now, but I am uncertain if the light was ever fixed before he picked it up. They have the info from here on how to go about fixing it, I'll leave it up to them to figure it out.

Thanks!

'81 4x4 wagon w/passing lamp

I got busy trying to fix my passing lamp yesterday, but ran outta daylight

before I could completely remove it.. (front bumper will have to be removed

before i can pull it).

My light works, but the door/cover will not open. My question to those

who have a functional lamp would be this..

Should I be able to open the lamp door by hand, by rotating the lever

behind the motor? If so, then I believe mine to be frozen up, but if

not, then maybe I just have the 'bad solder connections' on the front

of the door motor... The most common 3rd-eye failure, according to other

USMB users..

. Oh, and the clear vacuum hose attached to the 3rd eye door motor isn't connected on

one end; is simple pinched over and zip tied to the sheetmetal bracket.is that

correct?

any help will be appreciated. that light is too cool not to work properly!! ;)

anyone have parts for sale?:)

thanks,

gadberry
