timfreddo
Hi. I am trying to replace the seals in my 94 legacy, just went out and baught a big breaker bar, and sourced a chain wrench. i'll try to explain the prob to you.... 1. put chain wrench on crankshaft pulley 2. Put breaker bar with socket over the bolt in the middle 3. turn breaker bar, whilst holding chain wrench still. now comes the problem.... 4. the outside of the pulley is held still by the wrench as expected, but the inside of the pulley(including the seal) spins as i turn, instead of just the nut undoing. 5. Get very annoyed, coz im guessing now my top dead centre is F*&ked up! anyone else had this prob, or any clues on how to solve problem. cheers Tim
gbianchi
O K heres what I would do, place your breaker bar with the socket on the crank bolt, lay the end of the bar against the panel next to the battery, bump your starter one time real quik. This has never not worked for me:banana:A word of caution, be sure to protect the radiator, you could also bungee the breaker bar in place or rap some padding around the bar, don't start the car:eek:, as far as the TDC issue I'm not sure about it, should not matter as TDC is piston/crank related not the pulley, hope this helps some................G
idosubaru
just replace the pulley, no worries about top dead center, the crank pulley has nothing to do with that at all on these cars. i have some extra pulleys, if you want one email/PM me and i'll sell/mail you one. starter method or impact wrenches are your friends in this case. the only way without those is the redneck impact method - socket and some SERIOUS blows with a huge hammer. Gloyale
Problem is, you can't keep the engine from turning while you use the wrench, correct? Here what to do. Manual trans: Place the car in 4th gear, wheels on ground, and set the e-brake tight. Now when you put the socket and breaker bar (and possibly cheater pipe) on and turn it, the motor will turn about half a turn, then "lock" against the drivetrain. If car starts to move, have an assistant hold the brakes more firmly. Auto Trans: Remove rubber plug at back of the engine to view flexplate. turn over motor until one of the large opening in the flexplate can be seen. Insert a large screwdriver into the opening and wedge it against the bell. *MAKE SURE NOT TO WEDGE THE DRIVER AGAINST THE TPS" The starter method works just as well for removing hte pulley. But you will need these techniques in order to get it even close to tight enough when reassembling.
Fairtax4me
You need to replace the pulley. Jam the flywheel with a big screwdriver to hold the crank still. You'll just have to reset the position of the crankshaft to TDC before installing the timing belt. This is done with marks on the timing sprocket so you don't need to have the pulley in place to know where TDC is.
