Sonicfrog
Well, my 5 speed AWD tranny is going out on Red, the $300 94 Alpine Wagon. When the clutch is released, there is a nice bearing noise from within the tranny case. My previous tranny started losing gears, so I bought another used for cheap (real cheap) and though it was a bit noisy upon installation, it did what it had to do, get me through the year. But it's starting to get louder, so it's time for a newer used one. Let me know if anyone has a spare here in CA. I will pick up.

When you say it makes the noise when the clutch is released do you mean sitting still in neutral with the clutch released? If so it sounds like it's the main bearing on the input shaft. It's actally not that hard to replace if you have access to a press and it only costs about $70 for both bearings. I did it on my 95 at about 175k. Sonicfrog
Ok. after reading Gloyale's post on main tranny replacement, I'm gonna try it. The worst that can happen is that I screw it up, and need to get a new tranny anyway!
