  1. the ej temp sending unit reads half what ea's do(when its reading a quarter temp it is really half, or if its at half- its hot) on the manifold there are two sending units, mtnman38 drilled one out and tapped it to put in a ea sensor. worked great. and adam at nwrs can help with a relay for the fuel pump if you dont have the original. did you get the main relay for the ecu? if you run without it you will have to unplug the battery overnight or the ecu will drain it. awesome build scott.
  2. dont need it, but on the other hand, i put in a 81 ps rack and ran lines from my ej pump an it was way worth it. too bad i never really got to enjoy it, i was rearended 268 miles after completion... actually the day i got the ps working.
  3. it is amazing to see a beat up old wagon yhat still has the cargo cover.
  4. i do believe this thread needs to be resurected.....alot has happened in a year...
  5. i need a flippen garage, i think this project may be put away for the winter:mad:
  6. catch a plane and drive one back, seattle is full o them. good luck.
  7. just fixed one. one of your plugs are going bad. either replace or cleanup, either way use some dielectric grease for a better connection on both.
  8. test your check valve in the vacuum hose to the master cylender
  9. good luck. a few things to consider: adapter wiring and you are limited on length i dont think even an inline four would fit between the trans and radiator, did vw make a h4 diesel back in the day mabey or is there any such thing as a v4 diesel?
  10. any 95-2000 legacy hood will work. leg L, ls, lsi, gt, outback, brighton, as long as its the same bodystyle. negative on the impreza hoods (outback sport is an imp. wagon).
  11. sounds like your timing may be off, i believe its supposed to be at 8 btc, mabey 20 btc, the big question is, does that kennedy flywheel have matching timing marks as the stock subaru flywheel? another thing, when you found tdc, is the disty centered on the adjustment bolt. its easy to be a tooth off... itll still run, but with low power. your vacuum should be around -10-12 lbs at idle, -20 at +2000 rpm. at least thats what my boost guage said in my turbo, could be different for your application. id also look into what fuel pressure you would need to run 2 carbs, you said rou ran them on the old vw motor?
  12. ya it was hard enough to find the 80 stuff, i may just try to drill new holes and mount it and hope im not to far off from where it needs to be for proper rear alignment. ill look into the torsion bar swap tho', thanx for the info. i suppose i could cross reference rear axles between the two to know for sure? anyone got any thoughts on my gas tank?
  13. and another question (for ej guys) the gas tanks that came in these cars do not have a return fuel line. i cant change tanks due to the filler being on the drivers side. do you think i could run the return and plumb it in to the main fuel line "before" the fuel pump? would that work? or do i need to pop a hole in the tank and run it inside?
  14. im talking about the car itself. by ea71 i meant the bodystyle. the thread belongs here because of the build. if i were to put this in the historic forum, id probobly get the same response because of the "ej " my question is in reference to the actual body, i removed the 2wd rear swingarms, and put in the 4wd ones, and they bolt up fine in the wheel well, but in the center of the car the y bolt up to a plate that is welded in, and they do not line up. i am concerned about drilling new holes, and mounting them due to wheel allignment problems. it seems as though the rear of the 74 is mabey 2 inches narrower than the 80 brat that i got the 4wd assembly from. mabey today i can get out there and take some pictures, but probobly not.
  15. has anyone ran into a width diference between early ea71's and later ones? my rear assembly from the '80 brat seems to be wider than the '74 or mabey the plate in the center is different? its kinda hard to describe. mabey this should be asked inthe historic section. seems none of you are interested.
  16. so far ive got he car, motor , tranny, rearend, and rear assembly from an 80 brat to swap the car to 4wd(thanx oneeye) priorites for now: 1. swap the car to 4wd. 2. swap front end to 80 brat. get the car updated to be able to accept ej, IE. 80 brat, crossmember, steering rack, control arms, the 74 crossmember is way different. the steering rack runs ontop of the crossmember, and on the control arms the swaybar is the only stabiizer. i have to spread the "frame rails" in the engine bay a little to be wide enough to fit the ej. i need to mount the rear assembly, and modify the rear frame to make room for a driveline. change the gas tank out because the junkyard i got the car from punctured the tank to drain it. well, thats all for now, ill try to keep you all updated.
  17. ok here goes... my 87 hatch was totaled (rearended) 268 mi. after i finished my ej swap. time to step it up a notch. 74 wagon 2wd. 92 ej22+ 4:11 awd drivetrain. this will be fun...
  18. possible injector leakdown, take a battery and check them if you hear a click then they are doing their job, if not then while sitting it may be flooding, another sign of this is your mileage will suck you should be in the 23- 25 range if its lower then this may be your prob, and the injector is stuck open givin one or more cylenders gas all the time, also lowering pressure on the other ones. also check your coil, start it up and one by one pull the plugs off the coil they should arc to the coil when working, but be carefull this is a job for a good rubber glove because if it arcs thru your finger it will feel like flowers blowing in a warm spring breeze.
