1984 GL 4spd Transmission Rebuild Kit

Featured Replies

Hey guys I'm trying to fix this old GL I have laying around but I can't find any place that sells transmission rebuild kits near Sacramento, if anyone can help me that would be cool thanks guys.

No one sells kits for them. I checked into it a few years back. Subaru never made a kit either. You'll have to tear it down, make a list of the parts you need, and order them through the dealer. Some of them like the seals and bearings will probably be off-the-shelf parts at any bearing house.

You are in for a real treat if you really plan to rebuild a 4 speed. There's a reason no one ever does.... that and 5 speed's are so plentiful and cheap that there's just no reason to mess with the 4's. There's so many ways that the 5's are better that it's worth the little bit of fab work to install them. The price for the parts to rebuild a 4 will be twice the price of a good used 5.

that's what I was thinking. Not sure about the early 80's, but I'd think they're about the same as late 80's. I don't see/have enough issues with late 80's stuff to justify the expense of a complete rebuild. Though I can understand wanting to do it right and have it done for sure.

do the 5sp swap ........that 4th gear is a gift compaired to the 4speeds 3rd going up slight inclines

Thanks for all the replies

does the 5spd fit up with the 4WD 4spd??, I forgot to put that in the original post.

How much would a 5spd tranny cost and which one would I get??

Yes - they are both 4WD, Dual-Range transmissions.

The transmissions to get are from '85 to '89 Non-Turbo GL's - wagon's, sedan's, and three-door coupe's (not the hatchback). You don't want a DL, and you don't want a 90-94 Loyale as those were push-button single-range transmissions.

Junk yards are your friend. U-Pull-It style yards are usually cheapest but call around and see what you find. Cost is generally around $75 to $250 depending on what you get and where you get it. Some places offer warantee's ect.

Contact Jerry (Bratsrus1 here on the board). He makes a cross-member for mounting the 5 speed to the EA81 body. He is very reasonble. You will also need the driveline from the donor car as the 5 speed's are physically shorter than the 4's. You need the clutch for the 5 speed as well - depending on how you do it you can use the EA81 flywheel and pressure plate with the EA82 disc or you can use the entire EA82 assembly.
