Transmission compatability??

Featured Replies

i have a 2000 legacy outback wagon- with 4.11 5spd trans. it took a superpoop

i need to know what other transmissions i can put in, obviously must me another 411 5spd- but

for example, a 99 forester 411 5spd- direct swap? im aware that they have different 1st05th gear ratios,i could care less- as long as it bolts in, throws no codes, and i dont need to modify axles or drivelines.

please help asap- my car is down and i have small subie enthusiests that need to go to school

Subaru 5 speed transmissions pretty much interchange over a fairly wide spread of model years. Just watch the rear diff ratio and whether it's a cable or hydraulic clutch (although even that can sometimes be converted). Check out the USRM for transmissions that would suit you. A Forester transmission would probably work just fine for you. Lastly, try to match up engine types (e.g. I wouldn't install a EJ18 transmission in your Outback even if it might fit).

i have a factory transmission gear chart, both are listed as 4.11s with hydro push clutches.

and all foresters came with an ej25, as did my outback...so

in my mind its a swap- but as ive stated before, im an ea expert, not an ej

match gear ratios and clutch type and swap all day.

i've heard people say you can interchange clutch/cable style trans but you'd have to deal with swapping all the linkages, cables, pedal stuffs, etc. and i haven't actually seen it done/confirmed.

I currently have a former WRX ('95 JDM version) transmission in my Impreza. Needed to convert a hydraulic to a cable type. Needed to change the clutch fork, move the pivot ball, remove the hydraulic stuff and install. Works great!

next post is what I meant to post ;)

It sounds like this might be answered? as such, i have a similar but different concept question.

What do people think about swapping an Aussie Forester (say 98-00?) 5MT into a USDM 95 Legacy? What issues concerns might i need to think about and look into more deeply? As I understand the AU FOR is 4.11, so i'll need a 4.11 rear diff, but otherwise will there be other concerns if FOR is 2.5 and my Leg is 2.2? If there are different bolting (bell housing) paterns, say FOR is 6 bolt but my Leg is 4 bot, would they still mesh where they overlap??

Thoughts continue, but looking for more heads' worth of Suby experience, and ideas I wouldn't think to concern myself with.

Thanks!

4.22 corrected to 4.11 per edrach

I'm sure this is a typo, but you'll need a 4.11 rear diff.

Good catch!

And yes that's what my fat fingers meant :)

I have a cable (push?) clutch. Are AU FOR clutches cable (push?) or hydraulic (pull?)?
