Mounted some 6.5" speakers into the front doors of my wagon yesterday and they seemed to fit great.Now my windows wont open all the way lol. How do I mount them to the door panel instead of in the door? Is this ok to do ?

Pretty sure you have a ea wagon like me. I instanned 6.5 speakers in my door with no problem.

you just need to install a spacer ring between the back of the speaker and the mounting surface. even several thick washer collars behind them inside the mount screws will work, but spacer rings will make the air seal and speakers will sound better with the solid ring. Or, you could just buy proper speakers with shallow mount and not do anything else.

I'm putting 6.5 separates in the doors of my 81 Brat and have the same issue. The best solution is to make a custom baffle plate outta MDF. Measure first to see how deep your speakers sit, you need the baffle plate to get you at least that far from the surface of the door. If you get MDF that's thicker than the space you need, you can recess the speaker into it. If it's not too late, you might also want to add some sound dampening to the inside of the door skin while it's torn apart.

plywood will also work, make a donut. MDF will get moisture in it and crumble.

I recommend something made of plastic or polymers to prevent the crumbling when it gets moisture around it.

I've had larger plywood baffles buzz, so I quit using it at all, prolly would work fine for a small baffle that's not bridging a large hole. That's right about MDF being intolerant of moisture. Mine are getting paint and Herculiner, guess I shoulda mentioned it.

Easiest way is just cut out the speaker grill in the door panel and drill into the plastic to hold the speaker. thats what I did in the Beast, worked fine, I had 6 1/2" Pioneer 3 ways.

Whaterver you do,don't half a$$ the job. It Has to be done with solid construction methods. The opening and closing of the door with the weight of the speaker will test your fasteners. If it's not right,the weight of the speakers will soon tear loose and leave you with a mess.

 

Trust me. I know this.

I have had that problem with almost every EA81 subaru i have owned. Even my Legacy had the same problem, but that was with some REAL nice 6.5's

 

I suggest you goto any local car audio shop and find some spacers.

 

I did this with my Brat, I kind of like being able to roll my windows all the way down.

 

i google searched speaker spacers and came up with these.

 

They look kinda like strut top mount spacers too

Now those are slick. Where'd ya find 'em?
