There is this race called the 24hr of lemons. I was wonder if i should race my stock 84 GL. Anyone's thoughts?

all you have to do is finish, game of survival.

Not if you like it how it looks right now. They tend to "lean" on each other pretty heavily. It won't look good even if you finish.

Buy a loyale off craigslist and run that. Should be easy to find a $2-400 car put a few dollars into it and run the race for under $500.

Maybe if you just cruised around at a brisk 35 mph, but, there is the element of "race" added to this. These guys actually get up, and rolling pretty decent.

 

I wouldn't rely to heavily on an EA82 to get this job done.

 

Maybe if you dropped an ea81 into it.

"Grassroots Motorsports" I believe is what it's called, it's a magazine.

 

They do a thing called the $2000 rally challenge, it's a great read. Look it up sometime.

 

Lots of old beaters just getting the piss beat out of them on a small budget.

 

 

 

And I am with 3 eye, EA81 motor..then stuff it in, and "race" at 85 mph all day!

I would be kinda fun to enter it but I am too poor for the safety equipment.

Subarus typically don't do well here. Theres too much understeer and not enough power to put the drivetrain to use. And weight.

 

Honda CRX do verywell if they survive the first few hours of madmax untill things settle down.

 

My friend was on the team that entered an old 5 series beamer. I think they welded the engine to the crossmember.

IDK, set one up with good timing belts and tensioners and I am sure an EA82 could take the abuse for 124 hours, let alone 24.

 

The T-belts are it's only weakness.......otherwise it revs quicker and higher, with more HP than the EA81.

if you really wanted a cheap track car get yourself a early to mid 80's celica with a 22R. It is rear wheel drive and would definately take the abuse. Can usually pick a runnin or close to runnin for a couple hundred wing wangs

Surprisingly, I wasn't knocking the ea82 for its' t belts. Anyone who has the gumption to go race one would probably know enough that they could just replace t belts quickly anyways, and only lose a little time on the track. I just know they'd get too hot too quick, and probably go pop. Even with improved cooling, I just don't think they'd handle a "race" setting like an ea81 would. Even if they can rev higher, and have more HP; I don't think they can hold the rev as reliably.

It kind of depends on the track but I know that neither an EA81 or EA82 would do well at all at thunder hill. I did the last race there in a ford festiva with a 323 1.6L and we got stomped. we missed 50th place by 1 second and got 3rd in our class. Our car wasn't the fastest but it handles pretty decent. Most of the cars out there have been through several races and are getting really fast. The festiva is going to be much faster at the next race with our mazda BP swap. We may slap a turbo on there but we'll have to see how much energy we want to put into it.

 

I just don't think the subaru engines would be up to the continuous high rpm abuse. I was really surprise that our festiva lasted the race with being at the top of 3rd for most of it since we didn't have much power.

 

Also the whole bumping and crashing thing has really been toned down. It does still happen from time to time but it's no where near as bad as it was when we raced at Altamont. I didn't get bumped once at the last race.

 

I also wanted to ad that the 4wd system would end up being dead weight since you'd end up just breaking it on dry pavement. It might be useful if it rained but even then there might just be too much traction.

What you do is use the 500 dollars to buy an EA82 with 2 parts cars. When you blow a motor in the rod-throw-o-rama just throw in your extra motor and your good to go for the next event

 

Actually, if you have two parts cars with working engines just bring the engines to the track with you. It doesn't take long at all to swap them out.
