But you're getting the new tires, radiator, alt... It shouldn't be hard or pricey to locate an engine.

the 98 forester I'm looking at is listed as having a 2.4L engine.

'98 Forester would have a Phase I 2.5L - that's the EJ25 - stear WAY clear of that engine. '99 and up Forester's have the Phase II.

There has never been a factory 2.3 or 2.4. EJ15, EJ16, EJ18, EJ20, EJ22, EJ25......

Umm... I must have missed something with that link cause the price of their weakest engine is 13K... i don't want to spend 1,300...

I'm trying to get this done.. completely done car and all for less than 800.

Ok cool... figured that they might have gotten that wrong.

I didn't mean for you to buy it. Just to let you know, indeed, there is a 2.3:)

That's a tall order. You aren't going to find anything that doesn't need work for $500 or less. I'll be at around $800 when I'm done with the '91 I just bought and I only paid $250 for the car. And that's a DEAL.

I just need a good short block.

There's a 2.35L - that's an EJ22 with EJ25 crank and rods. Basically an EJ22 stroker. Not a factory engine though and typically not done unless you are planning to built an 800 HP monster turbo engine.

I know that to do the oil pump, water pump, timing belt w/ tensioners, HVLAs, are cam seals would cost me just over 300 on ebay for everything... how much could a rebuild kit or short block really cost?

I just need a good short block.

You won't find that easily in the EJ25 phase I. That's what fails the most on them besides head gaskets. Rod failure and piston slap are very common with that engine. Coupled with the terrible head gaskets - the EJ25 phase I is to be avoided at all costs or swapped out with an EJ22.

Yea, now me...I'm working on a plan to go steal one of them.

I need a good ea82 short block.

Which short block do you need? I'm lost in your post here - you are all over the map with EA82's and EJ25's......

GD

EA82... I was considering a donor vehicle with the EJ engine in it but I"m not wild about that idea.

The only good EA82 short block is the one on the end of the anchor chain.....

Used engines are a dime a dozen. You probably won't find just the short-block - you'll have to buy a whole engine to get one most likely.

if you're looking for a cheap EA beater just buy one and do the headgaskets. if it's done right and not a turbo they can last a really long time. problem is their value isn't in the vehicle at all, zero value. they're value is in you can make 100,000 miles really cheap with them, that's about it. There's a few that can get 35-40 mpg but noone wanting good mileage wants an older car like this.

Complete EA82's:

1-866-480-7278 $350 in Gary, IN

219-981-0122 in Merriville, IN

1-800-225-9025 $150 for just a short block in Columbus, IN

Guess I missed something but your original post says TOD? that doesn't require engine replacement at all.

if you got a cheap EA82 just run the thing forever with TOD, turn your radio up. throw an oil pump and new seals at it and call it a day.

LOL.... forgot your the EA hater :D

Not *the*, but definitely *one* of them. There are quite a few of us.

Try eBay - there are quite a few recyclers that post engines and such. I shipped a short-block across the country for like $75 about a year ago.

The Rodney Dangerfield of Subaru engines. I think he is like "The Anti-EA-82". A thorn in his side, for sure.

TOD AND rod knock... it's the latter half that justifies replacement.
