I'm finally starting to get the hang of pitching my 87 Hatch sideways on the snow, but it's a big adjustment not being able to use the E-brake to do it. I do a bit of a Scandinavian flick and steer the wrong way briefly then crank it hard into the corner. It generally throws the back end out, but on occasion I scare the crap out of myself and briefly under-steer dangerously close to a ditch.

 

How do you other 4wd guys do it? Scandinavian flick? Just turn real hard and wait for the front tires to bite? Clutch kicks?

I generally play with the clutch while in 4wd. Probably not the best for the clutch but fun nonetheless. Slightly turning and while doing so dumping the clutch. Sometimes playing back and forth with clutch/Gas.

In my '87 4wd however that doesn't work...

Playing with the clutch would be a good idea.. if you like doing clutch jobs/can afford it. I can't. So either "scandanavian flick" or some hard braking into the corner or left foot braking in the corner. still getting a feel for it too. today was the first real fun day. correcting with manual steering is hectic...

on snow or ice, i usually just get on the gas hard and turn the wheel about 90 degrees...wait 1/2 a second for the back end to start commin around, pull it back to 1/4-1/2 throttle steeer into it and feather the throttle and/or steering to keep the backend in back, and front end en front. slow steady acceleration will pull the front end, deceleratoin will pull the back end around. avoid jerking at this point on steering, or throttle. point your front tires in the general direction you want the car to gousing the accel/decel to adjust the amount of slide you have.

 

Find a nice big empty parking lot and practice for a few hours.

i pitch the car do the left while braking and trow it into a right turn (and the other way around) and then don´t start to give it gas until i need to straighten it out.

 

on higspeed turns i just turn until it understeers and then let of the gas and steer into it
