another helpful tip is to keep the revs down until the car is up to temp..

 

cold oil = high oil pressure... you can do damage to the bearings in the turbo from this. ALWAYS let your car reach operating temp before romping on it. If I don't have time to let the car warm up before heading somewhere, the car won't see more than 3k rpms until it's up to temp and that is light acceleration and NO boost.

 

That is so true! I am now thinking of all those times I romped on it cold stupidly and now looking at my blown td04....

I think I mentioned the Subaru will be my daughter's car when she starts college in 2010. She hates the cold so she'll use the remote starter and let it idle for 15-20 minutes before ever leaving the house.

 

I'm restoring a 1967 VW bug so that's what I'll be driving. It was supposed to be her car but she can't figure out the clutch and refuses to use the window crank. Kids! :-)

 

Tomorrow we drive (again) down to Ogden and collect the Subaru.

It's back, it runs fine. Ogden Subaru threw in a tuneup and oil change for our trouble.

The paperwork says the nut holding the turbo impeller came off and damaged the turbo blades. I have no idea what that means. I'm guessing they screwed up installing the replacement turbo. But it didn't cost anything other than time and some gas money. Plus the new one has a one-year warranty.

what about the engine, wouldnt it "eat" whatever came loose in the turbo and fell off? make sure you keep documentation on this, i fear the engine will end up next.

As long as it was on the exhaust side it would have been fine, and it kinda sounds that way.

 

I didn't think it had anything to do with the banjo fitting, again, that has only been a problem on the other style block (Legacy GT, Outback XT, and Baja XT)

 

Glad it's all good now!! Hopefully it stays that way!!

If true,it was a bad turbo,not bad installation.

 

BTW-the nut is (or at least was) on the intake side.
