February 5, 200422 yr well i decided to climb under the scooby today to see what gears i do have, and if i do have an LSD, well it ends up i got 3.9's, so now i just have to go find a 3.9 LSD, much easier for me. i thought that 86's didn't 3.9's or was that with a LSD combo?? Shean
February 5, 200422 yr my 88 gl wagon has a 3.9 open rear diff.. the only car that i know of that had a 39.lsd was the fulltime 4wd xt6 and even that was a special order option.. hunt around and you might get lucky.. otherwise the only way to get a 3.9 lsd is get a 3.7 lsd and do some modifying.. this summer i'll be putting a 3.9 lsd in my 88 wagon.. i just got lucky and know where one is at sitting on a shelf
February 5, 200422 yr XT6 FT4WD 5 Speed was available with a 3.9 LSD Legacy (Turbo I think) Was available with a 3.9 VLSD 3.7 LSD can be changed to 3.9. I believe there is a how-to in the USRM
February 5, 200422 yr Author you dont you just ahve to change the ring and pinon from the 3.9 stock to the other 3.7 settup? i know there is an atricle on here, but its not really that informative on how to swap the gears, unless i missed that part. Shean
February 5, 200422 yr Look at my picture under my name, the is what the LSD tag looks like, a 3.900 LSD would look the same, but have 3.900 instead of 3.700 and a different part number. When you create a 3.900 LSD you keep the ring and pinion of the 3.900 and change the carrier (the part the ring gear bolts to). The picture the you show is of a stock 3.900 open diff available of every 4WD Suby that is not turbocharged. The rear diff on the Legacy turbo is a VLSD, and is really not a good diff to use if you plan to 4 wheel with your car.
February 5, 200422 yr Author Dr. RX, this car isnt for off-roading, i finally decided on that, im going to get a EA81 or older gen 1 brat for that, this is a street car, that is gonna be a s-curve car. mainly autoXing. thanks for the heads up on what the tag looks like, now i know what it says. Thanks again, Shean
February 5, 200422 yr Aaron's Auto Wrecking usually has one of the VLSDs sitting around. But, you'll think a hundred bucks for a 3.7 lsd is cheap comparitively. Tom also sells them on ebay, know what they're worth.
February 5, 200422 yr Yea, Zap is right, if you can't afford $100 for a 3.700 LSD, then don't ever look for a VLSD. The prices that I have seen are between $200 and $400 for a VLSD. I think you best bet for autoXing is a LSD.
February 5, 200422 yr Author well i can afford $100, but why pay that when people are gettin them from bone yards for $30 to $60 you know what i mean? so im just going to go and pull one my self, rather then deal with that other crap. Shean
February 5, 200422 yr  Good luck finding one. If it were that easy, we would all have one or two
