93 Legacy L - Hub and Bearing Questions

Hi guys... I'm in need of a hub and bearing replacement on my front p-side wheel. Was planning on ordering the parts from Rockauto.com, but not exactly sure which ones to get. The hub is simple enough, as all I need to figure out is if I have ABS. Actually I don't remember if I do, so I'll have to check...

 

The bearing on the other hand lists four different bearings. The brands are Timken, SKF, National (Taper Bearing Assembly), and Beck/Arnley. I don't know if it they are all "taper" or only the one specifically listed as such. They are all different prices, so a little more info would be very helpful.

93 could be AWD or FWD, but for the fronts I *thought* FWD and AWD hubs were interchangeable for the most part in legacy's.

 

rockauto is very confusing, it tends to list parts that are not for the vehicle you're searching for.

 

sorry i can't be any more specific than that but sometimes just typing the part number in google will bring up more specific applications and what years/makes the part is for.

Oh right, sorry I forgot to mention it's FWD, which does narrow it down a bit. I guess I'll have to do a little more digging ^_^.

Are you in wilmington DE, these guys have a used hub for $30: 302-322-3344

 

AH - scratch my remarks about impreza's, that difference is not in the hub. I'll edit that.

 

In 93 the loyale was still offered, so it might be listing those as well.

Checking up on some of these, good pictures on Amazon (link), is looks like there is an inner and outer bearing. However, I can't seem to confirm that there are in fact both based on this diagram. So are there two? And should I get both? Hmm... looks like a call to my mechanic is in order, too.

rear hubs are completely different between FWD and AWD.

 

so when I look on rockauto i'm seeing two that are listed for both FWD and AWD - that has to be front bearings, so just have to make sure they're legacy's. looks like they're showing multiple brands, but the same part.

from subaru's website:

there's only one bearing: #5

there are two seals: #2 and #6

Okay... I feel kind of dumb. But, how do I check if I have ABS? I checked the manual and it only says "if equipped," but I did look up where the ABS light is supposed to be when you start the car. It does not light up, and as far as I can tell I don't have ABS. Doesn't seem a definite indicator though...

according to http://www.cars101.com abs was available in 93 only on the impreza LS model.

hubs don't have any electrical wire/sensor attached to them unless they are ABS equipped. so you can visually check behind each tire, if there's not wire coming out from the metal between the engine bay and fender area and no wire/sensor bolted (with one bolt) to the hub then you don't have it.

 

the ABS motor is up front on the passengers side - a huge honking thing with lines all over it.

Look under the hood - look on the passenger side where the battery is located on the driver's side. There you will either find nothing, or you will find a big black thing with lines and wires comming out of it that will say ABS in large white print.

 

As for the bearings - it's a single outer bearing race with two tapered roller bearing inner races - one for the inside and one for the outside. All the parts are pressed together and you will not be able to service it without either a press and the right adaptors, or a hub-tamer or similar tool. These aren't like the EA stuff where you can get by with a drift punch. They are SERIOUSLY pressed into the hub and take quite a bit of force to remove and install - not to mention being very careful not to damage or deform anything when you do it. I use the "FWD bearing service kit" from Harbor Frieght - you have to be a bit creative with it and you need at least a puller to remove the outer bearing race from the hub in addition to the kit and regular hand tools. A 1/2" impact is also a must to operate the bearing tool - as I noted it's pressed together with enough force to deform the housing if you do it wrong so using a threaded puller/pusher, while possible, still requires application of serious force - in this case in the form of a quality impact gun.

 

Not to say you can't do it, but you will need the right tools. If you don't have the bearing kit it's about $80 from HF, and the replacement bearing runs about $35 plus $6 each for the seals (which the bearing tool also has provision for installing).

Thank you very much guys! Awesome responses as always ^_^. Will double check for ABS in the morning and then order the hub and bearings. I guess I better get the seals too.

 

My mechanic recommended to stick with Timken, which is great for me because that's also less expensive :).

 

EDIT: Yup, definitely no ABS under the hood ^_^. Time to go order those parts!

Just wanted to update this thread. I ordered the hub, bearing, and seals and got the put in. Turned out it wasn't the correct side, so the noise was still there.

 

Ended up ordering another set, and got it put in on the other correct side. This finally fixed the problem, and finally no more noise! Fortunately my mechanic cut me a deal on doing the second job, so it's all good. Turns out both sides has some wear, so it's good.

 

Last week I drove the car to DC, and no problems with the wheels :banana:.
