Ok this has me concerned. This is coming up a lot lately on the outback list as well.

 

There have been a couple of fixes:

1- Check to make sure the doors in the HVAC system are all working. If it is actually moving air through the passenger side footwell the door is working.

2-flush the heater core. Flush it repeatedly. No need to flush the entire cooling system.

3- the nuclear option - the heater core is clogged and needs to be replaced.

you are right.

if it did work okay, then we will find a way to get it back to that.

 

With that many miles, have you had the hvac air filtration filter changed yet. They can get quite bad after that many miles. Mine had 89k on it and it was TERRIBLE/double my parents

My parents had 36k on theirs, and it was Bad/nasty

if the heater core is made of a reactive material with the coolant ( maybe the supplier changed the spec). It can have narrow passageways that allow it to clog easily. those would be design flaws.
