February 16, 201016 yr We recently added a 95 Impreza to our family. It has the EJ22 with a 4EAT automatic. Our legacys have the same engine/tranny combination, and I have noticed that the Impreza doesn't like to downshift....the pedal can be to the floor and the tach still at 3000 rpm.....The legacy seems more eager to drop to a lower gear when the gas pedal is depressed. Is there some sort of adjustment that can be done to make this a bit more responsive to jabs at the gas pedal?
February 17, 201016 yr Well with first gen legacy's you jab the pedal and the power light kicks on and it downshifts with even extremely light throttle. Then again I have driven a similar vehicle and it downshifted pretty easy. Possibly look at the Throttle Position Sensor?

February 19, 201016 yr Change the transmission fluid too... it made my old 93 Impreza more eager to down shift with nice clean fluid instead of nasty old fluid.

February 19, 201016 yr Author The fluid is bad, more of an orangish color then red, so I will flush it out first. It would be nice if that takes care of the problem. Thanks again for the replies

February 20, 201016 yr Why the MAP sensor? Doesn't it use Speed and TP to determine shifting? Transmissions havent changed since the 1st say they were made. They need Line Pressure Road speed (Used to be the govenor now the VSS) Engine Load (used to be the vac modulator) Forced downshift (Usually a cable from the throttle). Engine load has come from engine vacume. There is a throttle input to the TCU, but the more important one for shifting is the MAP sensor. If he can get up to speed, there may be a problem with how the car is reading engine load. I manot ruling out the TPS, but if the engine responds to throttle, I wouldnt look there first. What happens if the OP manually shifts the car. nipper
