March 18, 201016 yr well i have read a few other threads on here about some issues with these carbs and their electric choke. so when i start this engine when cold i need to continually pump the accelerator to keep it running. it will never idle at a high rpm so as soon as i let my foot off the pedal it will die... until it gets warm and then things are just fine with it. is there a way i can test the choke system? is it most likely the problem? thx
March 18, 201016 yr The "hook" on the end of the EA82 choke springs wears through and falls off. At which point you have basically no choke. The other issue can be the fast idle cam mechanism isn't adjusted correctly or is sticking. It is best to remove the carb and give it a general cleaning and inspect the choke spring. Wouldn't be a bad idea to just throw a $35 rebuild kit at it and freshen it up as well - if you think you can manage a rebuild of one of these. They aren't too bad, but give some folks trouble that haven't got much experience with carbs. GD
March 19, 201016 yr Author thx... i've heard from another friend about the e-choke. it probably is that. never rebuilt a carb before. are there any schemats of the assembly? pic of it?
March 20, 201016 yr The rebuild kit will come with a basic breakdown of the parts in the kit. But it's best if you just label things and catagorize them as you go. The rebuild kit spec sheet should also have blank spaces next the part's breakdown to write in the jet sizes, etc as you remove them. Exploritory mechanicing. It's a good skill to have anyway. I can't count the number of things I've torn down that I've never seen the inside of before or even pictures in a manual - sometimes I'm not even entirely sure what those items are supposed to do...... March 20, 201016 yr Author thx GD, i'm hopefully bleeding brakes and installing a block heater in the next couple of weeks, then i'll be looking more into this carb issue. not entirely needed now but it's no fun working in the freezing temps.... nice to tackle these things in the nicer weather.
March 5, 20215 yr How is the fast idle cam adjusted? Have the same issue and haven't been able to figure it out, I have an '86 GL 4 door sedan with an EA82 w/ Hitachi carb.
