March 31, 201016 yr I'm looking to swap my push button 4wd 5speed to a D/R 5speed into my EA82 loyale (non turbo). I've read up and it doesn't seem too difficult. Is it as simple as just swapping it in, and adding a hole for the range selector? Do the D/R's have different gearing? Edited March 31, 201016 yr by brysawn
March 31, 201016 yr No its not just as simple as cutting a hole for the range selector. You have to make/buy tranny mounts/crossmember. Weld/bolt in carrier bearing. Little bit of wiring (if you care). I think 1st and second gear is a little smaller. But I did my lift and swap at the same time, so I cant really say.
March 31, 201016 yr its a direct bolt in if you have all the parts. along withthe trans itself, you will need its crossmember, the body bolts for it, the driveshaft(its a different lenght than the AT, and of course, the flywheel and its bolts. the 5spd dual range is a 3.9 gear. check your rear diff for the gearing on the sticker. if its 3.9 also, you can use it. there is no mods to the shifter hole. the shifter boot fits in the same holes as the shifter mountf or the AT pretty simple to do. it will be easier to install the trans if you remove the motor first, swap trans, and reinstall motor. take this chance to do engine seals
March 31, 201016 yr Wait!...I thought we were talking about switching out a push button 5 speed for a D/R 5 speed.
March 31, 201016 yr Yeah - my bad. I read that totally wrong. That would be a direct bolt in. The wiring would be differant, being the EA82 tranny didnt have a low range.
March 31, 201016 yr Author Wait!...I thought we were talking about switching out a push button 5 speed for a D/R 5 speed. That's what I was talking about...
March 31, 201016 yr my guess is that everyones first thought when talkin about a 5spd swap is that you are going from a 3at to a 5spd. thats what I originally assumed.
March 31, 201016 yr Author my guess is that everyones first thought when talkin about a 5spd swap is that you are going from a 3at to a 5spd. thats what I originally assumed. Edited now, to clarify.
March 31, 201016 yr Straight bolt-in. No modifications neccesary. Maybe a change to the wireing, and you need to make sure that you get a D/R from an '87 or newer that had fuel injection or it won't have the neutral switch. Older one's can work if you put a switch on the clutch pedal and wire it to the neutral switch lead off the ECU. GD
April 5, 201015 yr whoops, i misread too. simply switch out the trans itself(and shifters) the rest of it uses the same driveshaft, axles, and clutch/pp/flywheel
April 5, 201015 yr Direct swap. Just take the wiring from the S/R tranny and plug it into the new D/R tranny, the only things missing will be the low-range indicator. Grab a shifter console from a D/R car, bolt it all in, remove those stupid vacuum solenoids on the driver side strut tower and away you go! -Bill
April 6, 201015 yr I paid $50 for mine, came with flywheel and drive line. No shifting linkage. Linkage was $50 for Aaron's auto wrecking. So I would say $75-150 depending on milage.
April 6, 201015 yr should be dime a dozen out your way. out in more rearer areas, a price from 100-150 is reasonable for a dual range trans. if you can get them cheaper, you should ship them to me!
April 7, 201015 yr I know where one is in a parts car for $100. But,you gotta pull it. The good thing about that is,you get everything you need.
April 7, 201015 yr Author I'm sure these are still good with 180k+ miles, right? I can probably get one from pull-a-part for like $50. But I'm thinking about spending the extra $300 and getting a car too
