Is my Brat a dud???? Need help!!

Featured Replies

Well this baby needs work... Its lacking power. Did a full compression check and cylinder 1 and 3 are fine, 2 almost nothing and 4 nothing... Not very happy news.. Was told it ran fine when I bought it. Feeling a little dooped. :-\ Could be blown head or worn piston rings or leaking valve. Both plugs 3 and 4 were wet. I want to just bang my head right now!!!:banghead: Im sure this is going to be a costly job!!!!!!!!:-\ Any suggestions..

fixed info

this is odd, not typical of HG, or anything for that matter

flywheel

3 4

1 2

belt drive

"typical" would be 1 3 or 2 4 having issues

if you find this info in error, please check your number and try again

Im sorry your right. 1 and 3 are fine. 2 is very weak and 4 is nothing. Had it mixed up. I fixed the order in the original post. Any thing this could be other than what I think???

it is possible to be something besides a HG

1. improper valve adjustment, way off

2. bent push tubes

I have experienced #2, replaced the push tube and all was good

easy to replace without pulling engine

Explain more about the push tube thing. You have a pic???

If you have a bent pushrod, I doubt that is the actual problem. Stuck valve maybe or rings or piston. Without tearing into it you could do a leak down test on the suspect cylinders.

How do I do a leakdown test?? Explain it to me like I was a 5 year old.

A leakdown or cylinder leakage test is similar to a compression test in that it tells you how well your engine's cylinders are sealing. But instead of measuring pressure, it measures pressure loss.

A leak down test requires the removal of all the spark plugs. The crankshaft is then turned so that each piston is at top dead center (both valves closed) when each cylinder is tested. Most people start with cylinder number one and follow the engine's firing order.

A threaded coupling attached to a leakage gauge is screwed into a spark plug hole. Compressed air (80 to 90 psi) is then fed into the cylinder.

An engine is great condition should generally show only 5 to 10% leakage. An engine that's still in pretty good condition may show up to 20% leakage. But more than 30% leakage indicates trouble.

The neat thing about a leakage test (as opposed to a compression test) is that it's faster and easier to figure out where the pressure is going. If you hear air coming out of the tailpipe, it indicates a leaky exhaust valve. Air coming out of the throttle body or carburetor would point to a leaky intake valve. Air coming out of the breather vent or PCV valve fitting would tell you the rings and/or cylinders are worn.

A leakage test can also be used in conjunction with a compression test to diagnose other kinds of problems.

A cylinder that has poor compression but minimal leakage usually has a valvetrain problem such as a worn cam lobe, broken valve spring, collapsed lifter, bent push rod, etc.

If all the cylinders have low compression but show minimal leakage, the most likely cause is incorrect valve timing. The timing belt or chain may be off a notch or two.

If compression is good and leakage is minimal, but a cylinder is misfiring or shows up weak in a power balance test, it indicates a fuel delivery (bad injector) or ignition problem (fouled spark plug or bad plug wire).

Tommy, I will call you tomorrow (Saturday) when I will have time to have a good conversation. I'm sorry that you're having problem, but I really can't understand that. There were no problems when it left here except the issues we already talked about (paint, torn boot, etc.). Definately NO issues with compression. I'm not very happy about this, either. I already sent you money for the clutch that you said was bad and now this. Anyway, if you can wait until tomorrow, we can talk then.

Shouldn't be too bad if it is a HG but motors are easy to replace in these little "carucks" if needed.

Well.. Got it to my mechanic and he thinks maybe the rings and he will be pulling the heads to see if theres any wall damage as well. Hes swamped with projects so hopfully he will give me more info by this weekend.:-\

stay tuned

I see your sitting back and eating your popcorn on this one... You know this is a drama and not a comedy...:lol::lol:

Well engine is pulled and he will be pulling the heads off hopefully by this friday. He did a leak down test and thinks it might be the pistons (rings) cylider walls??... Hes very swamped with business so this might take a while to finsh. Heres pics....

To bad you don't live closer. We could have done that in my driveway and had that out and the heads off in day :( I love working on Subies.

Heres an update: Like I said before my mechanic is very busy and works alone so this is taking some time. Well heres pics for anyone who cares and for some non-believers... Heres the engine torn apart and the box of parts I just brought to him....
