I know "The Dude Abides" has the thread about updating his Jacks. I've follow that one, and I agree that sometimes the floor jack, bottle jacks, blocks of wood and jack stands can be a pain in the rump roast...don't get me wrong-that's what I use too-But...

 

I've been considering a hydraulic lift. I've noticed several on Craigslist in my area. One would fit nicely in my garage. I'm going to be working on rust areas, welding/cutting areas of the body and frame, etc. So I wonder if one of these smaller lifts-that elevate the auto to about waist level would be worth it for $500-700?

They do not expose enough of the bottom of the car in my opinion. Too much crap in the way to be useful unless you are a tire/wheel/brake shop. Then they are economical but only for 2nd, 3rd lifts. You still need the primary lift to be a full height unit that exposes the full undercarriage.

GD~Thanks, that was what I was thinking myself. For the money it's not worth it then...I'll continue to use the good ol' jack and jack stand system then!

What I am considering doing is putting a pit in my garage and then getting something like this:

Relatively inexpensive compared to post lifts and I couldn't fit a post lift in my garage anyway.

 

Or even just the pit....as the plastic surgeons like to say..... "It's easier to dig a hole than make a pole."

I've often thought of a pit when I build my garage, and that's what my Dad wants too so he's pressing me for it as well.

 

True, while a post lift is great they are so costly (relatively speaking when you don't have a business that needs one) and like you say, room in a small garage.

 

The pit you posted the link to, their lifts are virtually like a few for sale here in Albuquerque...too bad I don't have a pit already

id check fort lewis for hydro gear. they throw stuff away all the time
