86 EA82 wagon 3spd auto: 4wd won't engage

Featured Replies

Hi, as in the title, the 4wd on my wagon doesn't work. Does anone know which solenoid or actuator shifts it into 4wd? Whan you push the button, the light for the 4wd comes on but nothing else happens. Even in wet grass with a light push of the gas the only the front tires spin. I doubt anything in the trans is actually broken as the car was owned by an older gentleman and is in excellent shape and was garage kept for most of it's life. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Josh

I had this happen to 3 or 4 3 speed autos I had. The transfer clutches burnt out in mine, too much heavy use. I swapped them all to 5 spd dual range, and never had any issues again!!

check for vacuum leaks in the accuator lines, the acuator could be bad too. if everything checks out, you can jack the car up on all 4 wheels and try to engage the 4x4, if the rear spins whithout a load the rear clutch pack could be bad. is the trans fluid dark ?.

No, the fluid looks really good. The trans works perfect otherwise. Where is the actuator? There is only one vac line that I see and I think it is for the modulator as it goes to the motor and has vacuum all the time.

this is probably a duh, but you do have the same size tires/psi right?

Its been a long time since I've dealt with a 3AT 4wd, but I think the accuator has a pin that locks it into 4wd. I recall one of my t-coupes broke this pin and 4wd wouldnt engage.

I think its on the drivers side towards the back, round and I also think its electrical.

Thanks Turbone, you're right because I just found this in a FSM that I found searching online.

Thanks,

Josh

First thing to check on the 3at 4wd tranny is the solenoid that operates that pin. See if it is getting power when you push the 4wd button. If not trace it back till you find out why. If you have power the solenoid is bad, it just unscrews from the trans. The pin is part of the solenoid.
