I just replaced my '97 gas feed tube due to leakage. I replaced my '95 gas feed tube last year for the same reason!

 

So if anyone still has the plastic guard on the feed tube for their late 90's Subaru, take it off NOW. The plastic guard holds sand and such against the feed tube and promotes rust. If you take it off, you have a chance to prolong the life of the tube a few years.

helped a neighbor replace theirs last week, what a horrible design.

Just replaced the filler neck on my 99 Legacy GT this weekend for the exact same reason. Even my parts guy at the dealership told me to take that plastic cover right off.

Mine started leaking a week after I bought the car, the place I bought it from replaced it for free. And the '99 obw needed it's filler neck replaced too. Pretty much any suby 10 years or older is gonna go soon. As awesome as subarus are, they did some silly things

Can't believe these aren't available after market. Dealer only item.

Is this plastic cover present on first gen Impreza's?

I clean out that plastic thing occasionally to try to prevent this rust problem. We shall see if it works.

no biggie, it lasted 10 years, thats like triple the factory bumper to bumper warranty. They just dont build em to last much more. this will keep repair shops busy and its a profit/win for everyone.

Soooo....as I posted earlier in this thread, I just replaced the fuel neck in my 99 Legacy GT. I reattached all the hoses to their corresponding ports (at least I thought) on the top of the neck, but once I needed to add fuel I ran into a problem. The gas nozzle shuts off immediately once I begin fueling. Gas was pooled inside the reciever and bubbles were coming up out of the return hole. Once I pushed on the flapper valve the gas ran down the neck but came back up through the return. What did I screw up?

I think my neighbor paid the dealer over $200 for just the parts. How many of these cars are out there? If most of them need this repair, it turns into a nice little profit maker for subaru. I'm sure the engineers who came up with this are pretty proud of themselves.:-\
