So 84 gl 4x4 wagon, trying to put new pads on, went to squeeze the pison and it moved in a bit and then stopped, the piston did not go flush with the caliper, is it supposed to go flush? It makes it so i need about a quarter inch, more until it will slide over the new pads?

Someone else can probably confirm this, but on the gen 3 GL's (sounds like you have a gen 2) you have to rotate the piston in. Dont just push it in. Some people like to stick pliers in the little holes and twist, others use a small cube with pins on it from the auto parts store that you can stick on your socket wrench and turn it.
