98 legacy tran in a 2000 ?

Featured Replies

i found an ad looking for a transmission for there 2000 Legacy.

they need 5 speed. i have one from a 1998 Legacy.

would my 98 legacy trans work in a 2000 ?

-Thanks in advance

wiring differences anyone? it will bolt right up just fine.

there are two final drive ratios offered in subaru manual trans of this time period - 3.9 and 4.11. it would depend which models of legacy's you're talking about. GT and OBW will be 4.11. other models can be 3.9's.

you'll also want to clarify hydraulic clutch verses cable clutch. i believe you can "swap" between the two, but the purchaser might prefer knowing that up front.

*** oh yeah, you're lucky - JCE is looking at this thread, you're in good hands!

5 speeds are easy, the trans to engine bolts will work, just use the ones you have, and the clutch, push vs. pull - if there is a difference, you can make work with very little effort. what you need to make sure of is the final drive ratio. if that's off it's a bust.

double check the final drive ratio.

Their 'interchange' lists are very limiting. They only include cars w/the exact same transmission. Most of the time if the FD Ratio matches, the trans will work among EJ/EG/EZ-engine based Subarus.

But like noted above the '98 is a Push-style and the '00 is a Pull, per this ubiquitous trans chart. It'll still work, but they'll need the '98's clutch/PP/FW and shifter fork/slave cylinder, etc.
