92 Legacy Info Please!

Featured Replies

I have a 92 legacy I was going to replace the timing belt on. However, I cannot get the timing marks to line up on all 3 pulleys at the same time. What can I do? I have not been able to find any info on this and have been stuck for 5 days now. I need to get this step complete before I can even remove the old belt. This is not a turbo. Please, any info would be appreciated!

Thank you.

How close are they? They often won't line up perfectly to the notches on the rear belt covers. Straight up on all three - they usually aren't perfect though but if you imagine how much the mark would move if it were a whole tooth one way or the other it's usually obvious if it's off or not.

They're pretty far off. Can't even get all 3 straight up at the same time.

Is this a special tool situation? Is there any way I can do it manually without destroying the valves?

No special tools required.

You have compressed and pinned the tensioner right? Leave the bolts loose that hold it to it's bracket.

Line up everything but leave OFF the cogged idler and the bottom smooth idler.

Install the belt and hold tension on it where the cogged idler would be. Once you get it on and it's all lined up install the cogged idler and then the bottom smooth idler.

Push the tensioner over to the right with a flat-blade screwdriver and tighten the bolts. Then pull the pin. Rotated the engine two revs by hand and check that the marks align again on the pulley's.

Whole process takes about 45 seconds.
