Loyale wheel bearing issue

Recommended Posts

I have a 91 Loyale 4x4 5 speed, right rear wheel bearing is shot, napa gave me the wrong parts twice, one was for the full time 4 wheel drive later model loyale or turbo model with 4 wheel disc brakes, mine has drums in the rear with 4x4 on demand. the other bearing was too big, the outer bearing i pulled out was just a plastic cage, with tapered rollers that just spilled out, the inner bearing is not accessable as i need a special tool, called a subaru pin wrench/socket (3/8" drive), to fit the back of the hub and break the stake. ive heard of people just hitting it with a punch, but i would rather have the tool. need to call around for the right parts tomorrow, i just greased the ************ out of the old one, and put the seal back carefully and threw it back together.

Just knock the ring loose with a punch - you don't need the pin socket unless you do this all the time.

The bearings are an assembly - there is no inner and outer. They come as a set.

There is no difference between any of the EA rear wheel bearings on 4WD's. All of them use the same system - disc or drum does not matter.

Rockauto.com shows 3 different types of bearings for the rear, a tapered one similar to mine, a ball bearing type as well as a longer sealed one that NAPA gave me in the first place. none of the other techs i work with remember the last time they did one of these, so im goin to the subaru specialist shop tomorrow and askin them advice.

Im glad i drive an Japanese car, I had a damn 90 jaguar XJ today at work for calipers, pads, rotors, and a tune up. early ABS unit was a pain to bleed.
