00 Sub Forest, Scanners, Codes, ABS, Valves

OK so our forest is tossing codes

having it scanned at Autozone

OK so the ABS light has come on, gone off a few times but back on.

Autozone says they can't scan the ABS codes for some reason and it will cost $60 for Belltire to do it.

Will a $100 store bought scanner do the ABS and all, saving some money in the long run? Or will it be limited just like the handheld autozone is using???

near 190,000 miles n will probably have it forever, just now starting to need attention.

Dunno about these engines, what's the rules on it for when the valves should ever be adjusted, or left alone.

Just a regular hand held scanner won't get you into the ABS diagnostics. A good Snap On scanner or something of the like might be able to but I'm not positive. My MT2500 won't. The only thing I can tell you for sure that works is the Subaru Select Monitor.

i think there is a way to blink / flash the abs codes, but i don't remember how. i'd try a search ''abs* codes'' or ''reading abs* codes''.

There is currently NO aftermarket scanner on the market that will read Subaru ABS codes. I checked as this came up for me a while back. The only option is the Subaru scanner. My Snap-on and Matco reps both came up empty searching for this.

I guess it's time for me to write a How To: Read ABS Codes

Give me a few hours....

I've already got the info, I just need to put it together.

Download this: http://www.subaru-car.ru/for1/for_01_chas_11.pdf . See the section "Read Diagnostic Trouble Codes".

The diagnosis connector and ground probes are typically taped to the harness under the dash, above the accelerator pedal.

How To read ABS Codes

Symptom: Your ABS light is on.

The following information is not applicable to all OWBs and may only be applicable to OBD-II capable (96 and above).

In order to obtain the ABS codes you will have to use the ABS diagnostic terminal under the dashboard.

Step 1) Locate the ABS terminal under the dashboard under the steering wheel. It might be REALLY hidden, so take a long look. It looks like this:

Step 2) Take the two probes that are tapes to the ABS terminal and put them in positions 3 and 6. To find positions 3 and 6 look here:

tcu-diagnosis-connector-96-2.gif

Step 3) Turn the car to ON (not the engine, just the power)

Step 4) The ABS light is going to flash. Record the numbers of flashes.

Step 5) Unplug the ABS terminal
