EJ block question

Featured Replies

Is the same block used on most of the EJ motors, just bored/stroked differently?

A friend and I are looking to put a EJ20G into a first gen Legacy, but am wondering if it will bolt up to the stock Legacy transmission?

What motors will bolt up to this trans (other than the EJ22 of course)?

There have been updates and revisions, certain combinations of heads will fit depending on the generation of engine. Some stuff is retrofittable such as timing belt tensioners.

aside from that, the bellhousings are the same.

See below.

All phase 1 EJ18, EJ22T, EJ25, EG33 (SVX) will bolt up. The newer Phase 2 will too, but you'll only use 4 mounting bolts since that's all the Legacy has....this is not an issue, and is acceptable.

i was under the impression that turbo EJ motors will not bolt up to non turbo ej transmissions. that they are different bell housings. i might be wrong tho

yeah pretty much anything for like 15 year span bolts right up, that's the easy part.

turbo/non-turbo doesn't matter as far as bolting up to the transmission goes.

the engine cross member prevents a stock turbo set up from being installed in a non-turbo car, it doesn't have the exhaust clearance. i believe the typical solution is to get a turbo crossmember and swap it in.

Wow this forum moves quick. Thanks for the info and response.

On the EJ20G, are the motor mounts in the same spot?

Yes...and as noted by 'grossgary' there are some things to consider putting turbo engine into an NA car....the crossmember is a big one.

If you're new to all this, please do yourself a favor and check some of the Build threads on various Subaru forums.

Yeah, you are wrong.

All EJ, EG, and EZ series engines have compatible bellhousings and mount placement.

Turbo enigne in non turbo car = Modify crossmember(cut a big notch), or replace with Turbo Crossmember.
