December 14, 201015 yr I missed old school subies too much so I had to go and get another one. Then of course when you get one two more just seem to 'show up' at your house. I got a free.99 1986 dual range GL with a cracked head or blown HG (haven't actually gotten into looking at it) And I just picked up a 01' EJ22 out of a OBS. And just because anything worth doing is worth doing the really really hard way. OBDII and as if that wasn't hard enough its a Cali model. Heated garages and redbull are my friend. aparently until 2002 imps had OBDII ports and jumpers. Ordering up my adapter plate with my next paycheck.
December 30, 201015 yr Author So I finally got to working on the EA. Stocked up on wood for the wood stove in the garage. Zipped the hood of with my new 18v Makita impact (more on that in a sec). Got the dash almost out before my back/legs/neck/arms decided 240lbs of 6'5" man shouldn't be under a dash. So I jacked the car up and pulled off the exhaust. Holy crap that little drill rocks. Pulled off all the exhaust bolts from the header down to the trailer hitch without well a hitch.
January 20, 201115 yr Author Didn't really work on much over the holidays but I've been getting work done these last few days. The EA82 is out. I've got my redrilled flywheel all bolted up and am waiting on my adapter plate to drop the engine in. I had a little bit of wierd-ness go on when i went to get a new clutch kit. Turns out the standard clutch disk Shmucks sells dosn't fit my transmission. For some odd reason I have a 1 inch 24T spline on my transmission. Oh well I guess I'll just "have" to use a EJ22 clutch disk . I've been diving full into the wiring. Holy crap OBDII is a lot more work then OBDI just for the simple fact that you can't just follow the EA2EJ guide to the letter.
January 20, 201115 yr Nice work! And very nice wagon. I hope the OBDII swap goes well! I'm doing one right now as well, but I'm going with an older harness (1997 1.8 impreza) Looks like a very good project!
January 20, 201115 yr Adapters on the way UPS should see it tomarrow , what will you do for the Redrilled Flywheel ?
January 20, 201115 yr Author Adapters on the way UPS should see it tomarrow , what will you do for the Redrilled Flywheel ? I had a buddy who works for a machine shop do it for me. You can't beat the "buy me a beer this weekend" price.
January 21, 201115 yr Author I had an absolutely horrible day at work, and there was family drama when i got home. So I turned the stereo up all the way in the garage and got the EJ in.
April 1, 201114 yr I've always been wary of those hoses with the wires in them.. wont they rust on you eventually/ restrict flow with the inside ribbing?
April 1, 201114 yr Author I've always been wary of those hoses with the wires in them.. wont they rust on you eventually/ restrict flow with the inside ribbing? Yeah, its something I'll have to keep an eye on but for right now it provides much better flow then having three 90° bends in my hoses.
April 23, 201114 yr Hey Man, this was just what i was lookin for! i just sent you a pm regarding the obd2 wiring differences..
April 23, 201114 yr Author PM sent! oh btw it runs!! I'll try and get some of the particulars of the OBDII part of the swap posted up here.
April 26, 201114 yr Author Is that the super Nissan I see in the backround? Yeah, it still runs so it makes me feel kinda bad. Cannibalizing it for parts. But you gotta do what you gota do.
April 27, 201114 yr looks good. can't wait to see the finished product! That wiring swap looks gnar. You should make us a write-up.
April 28, 201114 yr Author haha I'll try it runs "okay" right now for nothing have either o2 sensors plugged in and a few vac leaks. Its going in for an exhaust on friday so i'll see where its at after that. Idles at a nice 2k and I'm deaf for a good 5 minutes after revving it to 5k while in my garage.
April 28, 201114 yr ha, excellent! im most of the way thru my wiring harness at the moment in my obd2 fun, with a nice pile of wire on the floor. for the wiring harness... did you keep the OP connector.. whatever that does? and the check connector? also in regards to the ea2ej swap.. how closely does that 'schematic' in there relate to the obd2 setup. it seems to me like it is pretty much same cept the pins on the ecu to tap to would be different?
April 28, 201114 yr Author for the wiring harness... did you keep the OP connector.. whatever that does? and the check connector? also in regards to the ea2ej swap.. how closely does that 'schematic' in there relate to the obd2 setup. it seems to me like it is pretty much same cept the pins on the ecu to tap to would be different? I kept the OBDII test plug. and all the jumpers better safe then sorry on those things. are you talking about the schematic in the EA2EJ swap guide? its WAY off with the OBDII stuff there isn't a SMJ so you don't need to worry about that. I'm just about done working on it for the day I'll try and get my own diagram drawn up of what "different".
