Rear drum removal

Featured Replies

I need to pull the rear drums, to replace shoes. What size/pitch bolt is needed to screw into holes to back the drum off?

Mine are pretty rusty.

I've never had to do it on my Subies, but on some other makes for sure.

I'm guessing that the same bolt thread you have on the front caliper slide pins would be correct. At least is was on my wife's Lexus (rotor, not drum in this case). You could try one of those to see if it fits, but I wouldn't suggest using one of those bolts, as it could get destroyed. If it fits, get a couple of new ones from an auto parts supplier to use for removing the drums. Good Luck!

It is an 8mm. 8x1.25

Make sure the handbrake is not on.

It can also be done by placing a block of wood on rotor and hitting with a hammer around the circumference.

Can get bolts from any good hardware store or an auto store.

The radiator bracket bolts are the right size. Just replace when done.

Thanks, that makes it easy. No extra trip to town needed.

If these are drum brakes (not parking brake) you might need to loosen the self adjusters before the drum will clear the shoes.

Two bolts, and a hammer, it came off okay.

Just as a warning to others, if you crank too hard on the bolts when pulling the drum off you can split the drum. You may be replacing it anyway, but a word of caution on going too hard on the bolts.

Yep, I can see that happening.. as hard as mine was to come off.

I went slow, quarter turn of bolt, then tapping drum, another quarter turn, more tapping, etc.. It came slowly but surely.
