ice build up, 96 outback

Featured Replies

This is my first Suby winter and I notice ice build up between the fenders and the front doors on the inside. Not in the cabin, but when you open the doors you see it. Down by your feet. I hope that makes sense. It happens on both sides and doesn't cause any problems except for the weather stripping freezing to the car. Just curious if anyone else gets this.

That area should drain. If you don't flush out the front fender wells, they will clog with dirt, leaves....

When its warm, spray lots of water into the area until it runs clear.

Then Every month flush it out!

Are your plastic fender liners intact?

Yes, everything appears intact. Am not too worried, just thought I'd see if other folks encounter this.

I think I know what you're talking about. Last year I had some ice down on top of the rocker panels that would freeze the door shut at night. I figured it was from me kicking my boots against the rocker to knock the snow off before I got in the car. Might have come from somewhere else though. Didn't pay much attention to it honestly. Just learned to knock it off with the scraper when I parked the car for the night.

does it happen to both sides at the same time. ?

when you park the car at night, does it lean to one side?

try parking backwards and see if it happens on the other side.

the car is designed to ''shed'' water both when sitting and when driving. and the weather seals are recessed at little so water can get in until it hits the seal. if you park it on a lean the water may not run the way it is supposed to and freeze and build up on the seal. thaw it out, clean the area and spray it with some silicone spray? maybe.

i have an old pick up with a cap and sometimes if i park it funny water gets in. park it differently , no water.

All the doors in my 96 legacy sedan freeze closed when it's cold out.

I can actually see ice between the window and weather stripping. My theory is that since it's very warm in the car, and very cold outside the car it causes severe condensation where the door closes and seals. As the inside of the car cools off this freezes and sticks the doors closed. On really cold mornings I have to seriously pull on the door handles to get my doors open.

The car is parked in a level driveway. I usually back in, but sometimes I just pull in. It happens the same on both driver and passenger side. I've made it more of a point to get rid of the ice in the wheel well. I don't recall the last time it was above freezing and I guess we've gotten about 8' of snow so far this season. The pic is from the passenger side. I left some of the ice since I couldn't get it all out and thought it might be a plug too.
