5 speed for 86 brat transmission questions

Recommended Posts

I have 1986 Brat. I want to do the 5 speed conversion. The brat has 3.90 gears

1. Is there any way to tell what the 5 speed transmission has for the front differential gears, if you don't have the donor car around? :-\

2. Do you have to make any modifications to the tunnel area on a non lifted 2nd gen Brat?

As far as I know all the EA82 cars (except turbo models) that you would use as donor vehicles have a 3.900. To be sure check the label on the rear diff to confirm that. Count the splines on the stub axles of the transmission: 23 teeth is non-turbo (3.900) and 25 teeth is turbo (3.700).

No modifications to the transmission tunnel are needed. Check (i.e. search) for posts by bratsrus1 for information on doing the 5 speed conversion.

You can count the number of ring-gear teeth through the drain plug hole using a flashlight. 39 = 3.9, 37 = 3.7. There aren't any other ratio's for the D/R here in the US.

Depending on how you build the transmission x-member you may have to modify the tunnel. Jerry (bratsrus1) builds a x-member for a very reasonable price ($100 last time I checked) that will just bolt the transmission up without touching the tunnel. The tollerances are very close with a 5 speed in the 4 speed tunnel - without lowering the transmission and rocking the engine backward slightly it will definitely rub. I would just get Jerry's kit as the R&D has been done and we know it works well.
