March 2, 200422 yr Ok these are rare as hens teeth over here in Australia, all the WRX owners snap em up for the closed deck and other goodies,so I figure I'd import one from the US.As the majority of you live there I was wondering what they go for with decent miles on them? I dont know what shipping would cost but just for the engine I doubt it wopuld be huge, and as my aussie dollar is doing better its not going to be a huge cost. Thanks Brett
March 2, 200422 yr Several people have gotten EJ22T's from the junkyards for about $700-$800 USD. Try asking around on the Legacy BBS, IIRC, someone is parting out a 91 turbo in the Parts Shed...
March 2, 200422 yr shipping US spec motors to foreign countries because they are sought after? got to go, there's a pig flying by my window:D
March 3, 200422 yr Brett, give this guy a call, i saw him advertising that he could convert any liberty 1st or 2nd gen to legacy GT (including interior and entire drive train) Im not sure what his name is, i think he is in Sydney. His mobile is: 0413 595507 He may be able to help you out.
March 3, 200422 yr I can get brand new EJ22T shortblocks, but shipping to OZ will likely be a killer . The good news is it costs so much to ship because we can only send them by air freight and you have it in like 2 days though !
March 3, 200422 yr Originally posted by North Ursalia I can get brand new EJ22T shortblocks <snip> What heads does one typically mate to these blocks? How strong are the internals? If memory serves, the EJ22T-equipped North American market Legacys made about 165HP, so the boost must have been pretty mild. Was this done for reasons of engine longevity, fuel economy, or what?
March 3, 200422 yr Author Thanks for the info guys, sydney is still a hike from here. I think I'll go for the EJ20T,easier to source and plenty of parts available.Unless my local wrecker can pull stuff out of the hat like he occasionally does .
March 3, 200422 yr The ej22t is extremly strong, all forged parts ecept for the pistons:( i heard of a guy putting down ovwer 400whp with a ej22t with just a new head gasket, head studs, but he had a water to air inner cooler.

More often than not, we put 2.5L heads on the 2.2 turbo block- the flow characteristics of the 2.2 head are abyssmal when compared to the 2.5 SOHC head. Originally posted by Snowman North Ursalia, how much do those S.B.s cost? $1525 shipped anywhere in the lower 48, or $1725 with a full engine gasket kit. I may be able to do a bit better than that though... I'll have to see if there is any movement room when I get in to work tomorrow. Feel free to email me brian@subaruwrxparts.com if I forget to get back to you
March 3, 200422 yr My EJ22T had SOHC 2.5 heads, metal caskets and ARP fasteners. IIRC (it was some time ago) it was making around 350 @ wheels at 15 psi and something like 385 at 18psi. I could have boosted higher, but it was the only engine I had and couldn't afford a replacement. There is a guy in Australia that has a gold '90 or '91 that is making something like 400kw -MR

They're cheaper than wooden ones, but still _not_ cheap.

March 4, 200422 yr I think it was a slush box, from memory, but i could be wrong. Its a very nice looking machine too, i have a photo in a Hot4's mag at home with some basic info, if i remember which mag i will try to bring it into work and scan the small article and photo.

How 'bout your turbo'ed Legacy? Manual or auto?
March 4, 200422 yr Unfortunately mines only the NA, but it is the ej22e, 96 awd 5spd. Its a nice looking car, dead straight (mate is a paintless dent remover). Im getting some 97 wrx 15"s for it in a week or two off a guy who i speed skate with, at the moment its got 14" white alloys, theyre strange, but not ugly. I have changed the muffler for one that growls a little, and lowered the car 1.25". Got big plans, but not big pockets so i dont know how far i will go with it all, maybe an ej22t, maybe not.. will have to see what the better half says when/if i ever get the $$$ to do it.
